Lead Ammo Ban in Washington

My beloved State of Washington, seeking to follow in California’s footsteps as they often do, is considering a total ban on lead ammo.  Clicking that link will lead you to NRA’s press release on the issue.

What’s going on is that Washington’s Department of Ecology (really?) is considering what they’re calling the “Lead Chemical Action Plan”; however this plan is open for public comment.  You can click this link to visit the Dep. of Ecology’s website and comment on the plan.  Here’s the .pdf file that they’re basing the plan off of; one of my big problems is that they talk about all this “non-lead ammo” that’s available, when in fact the number of manufacturers making completely lead free bullets is very small.

Washington’s plan would ban all lead ammo; right down to the .22LR that you use for plinking.  Sure, you’d be able to use it a private ranges, but outdoor plinking or small game hunting with your .22 is over.  Click the above links and express your opposition to this plan to Gov. Gregior and the Department of Ecology.

Phrase of the Day

From Tam: “Legacy Media”; used to identify the largely print and tv based forms of media which are quickly hurling themselves into obsolescence.

In my real line of work (B2B wireless management) we use the term “legacy device” to refer to phones that are on their last legs, devices that are technologically out of date and that carriers aren’t going to be supporting any longer.  I love referring to the mainstream media with this designator, as it’s a perfect way to describe their current attempts to snatch mediocrity from the jaws of irrelevance.

“Legacy media” indeed.

HR 6691 passes House

Here’s the NRA press release, and my favorite highlight:

The U.S. House of Representatives voted today to approve the National Rifle Association (NRA)-backed “Second Amendment Enforcement Act” in an overwhelming bi-partisan vote of 266-152

Things to know: the bill is no longer HR 6691; the Second Amendment Enforcement Act is now an amendment to HR 6842, The National Capital Security and Safety Act.  It’s now on to the Senate – I’ll be contacting Evan Bayh and Dick Luger informing them of my support for the Senate version of HR 6842; I of course encourage you to do the same with your senators.

Gun Porn – Bofors

Now that’s what I call a cannon.

The 57-mm Mk 110 naval gun system is more lethal and has a higher rate-of-fire than any competing system. Linked with a digital fire control system, the 57-mm Mk 110 fires automatic salvos at up to 220 rounds per minute. Servo-controlled electro hydraulic gun laying subsystems provide robust endurance and extreme pointing accuracy, even in high sea-state conditions.

This is the gun that’s being mounted on the Coast Guard’s new line of National Security Cutters and Offshore Patrol Cutters, as well as the Navy’s new Littoral Combat Ship.  I may have blogged about this before, however it was brought back to my attention because a reader just sent me a bunch of materials on the launching and commissioning of the USCG Bertholf, the first of the Coast Guard’s National Security Cutters, and the first ship to mount this weapons system.

The Bertholf carries the flag for the new Legend class of cutters, the official name for the NSC line of ships.  Once I get all the materials put together, I’ll have a detailed post on the launching and commissioning for all you military junkies.

Coming Out

Mike W. tells his anti-gun dad that he’s a gun owner.

I am lucky – I never had to come out to my parents about guns, since my father gave me my first BB gun when I was 8 or 10.  But I have had to “come out” to my coworkers, often completely on accident.  While I’m sure that some people in the office think I’m a crazy gun nut; for the most part everyone thinks of me as “just folk”.

1911 Porn

Guess what’s on its merry little way to me in a couple of weeks?

That’s right, my ParaUSA LTC 9mm – the Gun Blog 9mm as it were should be shipping out soon, and be in my hot little hands post haste.

Adjustable sights, Crimson Trace laser grips, and a bunch of magazines mean that this little 9mm is going to take up residence in my nightstand pretty much as soon as I wrap my hands around it.  After running through the low-light shoot-house with the Crimson Trace grips, I swore that all my home defense guns would have lasers on them just as soon as I could get the money together.

Honestly, there were plenty of shots that I took doing the shoot house where I don’t even remember seeing the laser, I just saw the target and the next thing I knew there were two neat little holes in the target.  I cannot be more enthusiastic when I recommend you get a pair of Crimson Trace laser grips for your blaster.

Guns and Abortion

Lyle (at Joe’s place) really does an excellent job of comparing the argument for gun rights to argument for abortion rights.

One of the things about this always gets me is that while the right to keep and bear arms is specifically enumerated in the Constitution, the right to abort your unborn child isn’t.  And yet, the left wing spends so much time and engery defending a right that was essentially created by five Supreme Court Justices while at the same time spending an equally insane amount of energy to destroy a right that is right there, plain as day.

Gun Nuts Radio: AHSA Shenanigans

Last night’s show on the American Hunters and Shooters Association’s radio spot was fantastic.  I’m very pleased to have Breda joining me on the show, as her knack for research and investigation really brings out the intellectual side of the show.

If you’d like to listen to the show, you can click the player above, or you can click this link to download the raw .mp3 file of the show.

We did a little bit more than just talk about AHSA’s radio ad though – we covered all the bases, included American Hunters and Shooters roots; roots which run straight back to the predecessor of the Brady Campaign, Handgun Control Institute. If you missed out on last night’s show but are interested in getting the real truth behind American Hunters & Shooters Association, click here to listen to the archive copy of the show.

Pass this on to your pro-gun friends, and especially if you have friends who are primarily hunters and not sport shooters; we need to make sure that people are educated and know that AHSA is a front for anti-gun organizations. Also, if you live in the area targeted by AHSA’s radio ad, make sure that you get the real truth about them out to all your fellow hunters and shooters. The states targeted by this commercial were:

  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • Colorado
  • Maryland
  •  New Hampshire

I wasn’t supposed to hear this commercial, since I live in Indiana, so I’m grateful that someone at ESPN radio (where I heard the ad) dropped the ball and played it on their air.  The radio gods were kind to me by giving me this show last night.

Come back for next week’s show, where we’ll kick off our series on frangible/environmentally friendly ammo!

Guilt by Geographic Location

You have got to be kidding me. This article seriously cannot be implying that because Palin’s from the Pacific Northwest that she’s a racist, just because some racist groups are from the Pacific Northwest.

It has been years since groups such as the Montana Militia, the Posse Comitatus and the Sagebrush Rebels, and individuals such as Terry Nichols and Ted Kaczynski have made us wonder why so many “angry white men” populated our rural regions. Many of us have forgotten the threat once posed by domestic terrorists and instead have turned our attention to foreign terrorists. But we should never forget that in the late 20th century, ultra-Christian, anti-statist and white-supremacist groups flourished in the states of the Pacific Northwest – called by many the “Great White Northwest” – the very region that Sarah Palin and her family call home.

REALLY? Oh man, I’m from the Pacific Northwest, and so is Joe Huffman. I guess we must be racists as well!
The worst part is that if you actually read the incredibly stupid article, that they define “diverse” by having a large number of African-Americans. I guess all those other minorities that live in the Pacific Northwest don’t count – sorry Asians, you’re 2nd class minorities in the eyes of Catherine McNichol-Stock. I mean, never mind that 8% of Washington’s population are Asians, or that a whopping 22% of the population of Alaska are either Native American or mixed race – you’re only diverse if you have a lot African Americans.
I have been continually surprised at the absolute psychosis displayed by the left-wing media in attacking Sarah Palin – but to criticize the Pacific Northwest as racist and by so doing color all the residents as racist in an attempt to smear Sarah Palin is well, insane. It’s also kind of racist actually, because as noted above, the author’s definition of diverse doesn’t count Native Americans, Asians, or Hispanics.
