ATK Ammo in Business Week

Business Week magazine takes a look at ATK’s ammo advertisements and their current push to attract a larger portion of the sport shooting and hunting market.

In the civilian market, ATK produces Federal ammo, whose recent lines have included the new .327 Federal Magnum, the Black Cloud shotgun round, and a couple of lines of high quality premium hunting ammo.  While the majority of ATK’s ammo profits are made supplying the US military, the civilian market obviously has a very high potential for growth.

Business Week things that they’re targeting younger shooters with their packaging, which I will agree is quite flashy, I just think that they’re trying to make their box stand out on the shelf.  When I’m looking at a shelf full of ammo, and I’ve got white boxes, green boxes, black boxes, and then there’s a neon orange box; I’m going to at least pick up the neon orange box and have a look.  I would say that Business Week does a pretty fair job of covering ATK’s civilian market push – it’s always heartening to see coverage of shooting sports companies in the mainstream media.

Friday Night Steel Results

Check out the Gun Nuts Radio Blog for the results of the recent Friday Night Steel match at Marion County Fish & Game.

Also, we’ve got a new logo up at the Gun Nuts Radio Blog, let me know what you think.  It was designed by some guy who apparently is willing to trade IT/graphic design favors for money and/or firearms/ammo.

American Hunters and Shooters on Gun Nuts Radio

In a slight change of plans, I’ve moved the show with Dan Smith of International Cartridge Corporation to a later date – however, I’ve had a show topic essentially dropped into my lap by the radio gods.

Yesterday, while listening to ESPN radio, I heard an advertisement for Barack Obama featuring Ray Schoenke of the American Hunters and Shooters Association.  You can listen to the .mp3 of the radio ad right here.  Tonight, at www.blogtalkradio.com/gunnuts we’ll play the ad live on the air, and then debunk the obvious falsehoods in the advertisement, as well take callers and guests to offer commentary on the show as well.  Remember, tonight’s show is at 9pm Eastern time – we’re no longer in that horrible 11pm time slot.

Tune in tonight at 9pm Eastern, you can listen live at Gun Nuts Radio.  In addition to myself, tonight I’ll have my friend Breda on the show as a guest host, offering her commentary and opinions on the AHSA radio ad.  Breda’s agreed to help out ocassionally on the show, I’m very excited to have her on board with me.

Don’t forget, tonight – 9pm on www.blogtalkradio.com/gunnuts we’re going to take Ray Schoenke and the American Hunters and Shooters Association to the woodshed for a good beating.  Call in live at (347) 539-5436 and be part of the show!

Kind of quiet today

Not a lot going on today; prepping for tomorrow night’s first 9pm Gun Nuts Radio show, which will be extended to 60 minutes!

I’m also pricing steel framed single-stack .45 ACP 1911s, so I can have a gun for CDP in IDPA and Single Stack Classic in USPSA.  Right now I’m looking at a Taurus PT1911, because someone who, well, knows their shit on 1911s told me that “it’s a great starting point to build on”, and because I honestly really like the price point.  There’s a lot to be said for spending $600 on a brand new gun that shoots right out of the box, as opposed to the $900 I’d be spending on Option 2, which is a Dan Wesson Pointman-7.

I’m also working on getting shows together for the rest of the month, including a Glock vs. 1911 show, because I really like flamewars.

Traditional Activism is interesting

This weekend, I had the opportunity to go door to door for John McCain and Gov. Mitch Daniels – I was volunteering with the Hamilton County Republican party making sure that voter registration records were accurate and that the Republicans knew where their supporters were so they could target them with fliers and other information.

The script they gave us was pretty straightforward, you would go to the door, knock, and if someone answered you’d introduce and identify yourself, and then ask them to verify if the people living in the house matched up with the current voter registration records.  If they did, you’d then ask them 2 questions: 1) Who they planned to vote for in the Presidential election; 2) who they planned to vote for in the Indiana Governor’s election.

At the conclusion of all that, you’d then ask them if there was anyone who was eligible to vote that wasn’t registered, and offer to give them a voter registration form (which was also a Mitch for Governor card) for them to fill out.

For the most part, it was pretty laid back.  The most common answer I got from people who actually answered the door was undecided in the Presidential, and Mitch Daniels in the Governor’s race.  The 2nd most common was McCain/Daniels in the Presidential and Governor’s, respectively.  Only a few people identified for Obama, which isn’t too surprising considering the area I was in, and even fewer people identified for Jill Long Thompson, who is pretty well reviled by a lot of people.

Now, you might be wondering where the value for the campaigns is in all of this.  It was explained to me that the people who answer let the Republican Party know where their support is – and they can then take effort to make sure that those supporters get out to the polls come Election Day.  Additionally in , there is a lot of bipartisan support for Mitch Daniels; I did have a couple of people say that’d vote for Obama in the Presidential and Daniels in the Gov. race.  Knowing that allows the Republican party to get information out to those people who might not have otherwise received it; which again strengthens their position going into the election.

I did have a couple of fun responses, including a little old lady who said I was “a very nice boy”, and cute kinda-hippie chick who said I was “pretty cute for a Republican.”  It was an interesting, and valuable day for me.  I really enjoyed getting involved in traditional activism – I feel very strongly about this election, as I still believe that all other issues aside, Obama will be an absolute disaster for our right to keep and bear arms.

I encourage you to contact your local party and get involved – do more than just blog it, actually get there and knock on doors or make phone calls.

Utah Struggling with Preemption

It seems that in Utah, some localities are bent on violating Utah’s preemption laws when it comes to firearms regulation.

In the late 1990s, state lawmakers passed a statute declaring that the Legislature has sole authority to regulate guns in the state. Local jurisdictions could only regulate firearms to the extent that that power was specifically delegated to them by the state.

In terms of “gun-friendliness”, Utah is doing pretty well; it seems their big struggle is similar to the one that we have to deal with here in Indiana, where localities and counties try to get around Indiana’s strong preemption law and pass local gun bans.  Marion County has been trying it forever, and so have the Chicago-Light politicians up in The Region.

Preemption laws are one of the most important laws that we have – if you have a state with strong preemption and pro-gun laws make sure that you stay on top of your state legislature to preserve those laws.  Usually at least once a session here in Indiana, the state rep from Marion county will try to sneak some bill through, and it’s been squashed every year…so far.

Scaring White People

Whoops.  So I had my profile picture on Trillian set to one of the images from the Blackwater/ParaUSA Shoot.  Here’s a copy of my IM conversation with my boss:

[13:23] Boss: change your picture… it looks crazy!
[13:24] n_r_ahab: real sad, that’s a great photo
[13:26] Boss: no it is not…it is violent
[13:26] n_r_ahab: D:
[13:28] n_r_ahab: done
[13:29] n_r_ahab: that photo was part of a PR shoot I did for ParaUSA’s new TTR, though.  Totally legit.
[13:29] Boss: totally crazy

If you’re wondering, I’m putting the picture below.

Future Shows

Alright guys – as you know, Gun Nuts Radio has moved time slots, we’re now at 9pm Eastern Time on Tuesdays.

I want to get some user/listener feedback here on what kind of shows you’d like to hear from us.  Obviously, I’ve got some ideas in the feedpipe, but it seems that the most popular shows we have are (shockingly enough) the ones where we focus on firearms, shooting sports, etc.  We have the upcoming show about frangible ammo,  and then I’m working on landing some interviews with top level competitive shooters, but other than that, I’m open to ideas.

So hit me with your requests, and I’ll see what we can do.
