Gun Nuts Radio: Frangible ammo

Last night’s show on Gun Nuts Radio was one of my favorite shows; although we didn’t have a lot of live callers (zero), the two guests we had were some of the best so far, and definitely most knowledgeable in the ammo fields.  Thanks to Dan from International Cartridge Corporation, and Harold from DRT Ammo from coming on the show and talking about their products.

Like I said last night, I’m extremely interested in the concept of frangible and non-toxic ammo – I mentioned another lead-free round that I’ve used, the Magtech First Defense line of ammo, which utilizes an all copper hollow point instead of a copper-jacketed lead round.  If you would like to download a copy of the .mp3 file of the show, you can do so by visiting this link, or you can listen using the embedded player below.

I really enjoy shows on topics like this; I’m a gun geek after all, so having the opportunity to talk about new products that other hunters and shooters may not be aware of is part of the reason that I started Gun Nuts Radio.

Next week’s show is still up in the air – suffice to say we will have a show next week, however I’m not sure if it’s going to be on Lasers as a training tool, Action Airgun, or competition shooting with a special guest. Hopefully I’ll know soon. I’ll see you all back again next week at 9pm Eastern time!

Tonight on Gun Nuts Radio

Tonight’s show will be talking about frangible ammo, we’ll be featuring interviews with employees of DRT Ammo and and International Cartridge Corporation.

The show will air live at 9pm Eastern time at the url www.blogtalkradio.com/gunnuts and we’ll be available for call ins and comments at (347) 539-5436.  Again, the show starts at 9pm Eastern time tonight.

Frangible ammo and lead free ammo as a subject is one that I’m actually quite interested in; as states pass and consider banning or prohibitions on lead based ammo, there is a need for an affordable product that is environmentally friendly and that delivers the same kind of performance as traditional ammo.  Early frangible ammo was unreliable, however the current generation of products is reliable, and according to the statements, delivers comparable terminal performance to standard centerfire ammo.

Tune in tonight at 9pm to www.blogtalkradio.com/gunnuts for our show on frangible ammunition.  Join the discussion live!

IDPA Partnering with First Shots program

From NSSF I find that at the IDPA National Championships this weekend in Pennsylvania, IDPA in conjuction with the excellent First Shots program to help introduce new shooters to the handgun sports.

When competitors gather during the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) National Championships this coming weekend, they’ll notice something different about this year’s event. IDPA headquarters, in partnership with the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), will be hosting two First Shots seminars for Guthsville, Pa.-area residents.  Also, IDPA is encouraging its members across the country to learn more about First Shots and get their local clubs involved. A full-page ad in the national championship match book encourages ranges to “Host a First Shots” seminar.

This is the kind of outreach that I get very excited for; when the shooting sports get directly involved with bringing new shooters into the game, everyone benefits.  Bravo to IDPA for working with First Shots to make this happen.  Also, good luck to everyone shooting the national championships.  I couldn’t make it this year, but next year, after I’ve been practicing for a year, will be a different story.

GSG-5 vs. Bowling pin-heads

Winner: GSG-5.  See below for video from this previous weekend’s bowling pin shoot.  The rifle that looks so awesome and tactical is a GSG-5 from ATI, a .22 LR clone of the MP-5.  According to Tam, it was “a blast”.

Like I said in “The Devil Went Down to Indy“, Pin shooting is probably my favorite handgun sport that exists; hopefully next month I’ll be able to get some shots of the centerfire action as well.

Action Airgun Week 1

I had the opportunity to shoot the first week of the Action Airgun season this past weekend; this was the first change I had to really get the kit out and work with it. If you go to Action Airgun’s website, you can see all the stuff that comes with the kit: a pistol, timer, BBs, CO2 cartridges, targets, target stands, everything you need to compete is in there.

After I shot the three courses of fire, we set up a crappy video camera to get som action footage of the stuff in action; the stages we’re shooting aren’t COFs from the match, but rather just some fun we had with the kit. Please note: there is one shot where the camera is downrange – the guy with the camera was behind safety glass the whole time and do not even think about doing this with a live firearm.

I’m pretty proud of the video from an ironic standpoint, because it’s a great representation of everything that is terrible about a youtube video: poor video quality, hackneyed music, it’s all there. But that being said, you can also get a pretty good idea of how much fun these Action Airgun matches are to shoot.

After shooting the Courses of Fire, I went and uploaded my scores at www.actionairgun.com – I had shot okay, but not great I thought. Imagine my surprise to see that I’m 2nd place overall after the first week of competition. The first place shooter has a lead of only three seconds, so if I run my guns very fast next week, I might be able to make that up.

I was kind of disappointed to see that a lot of people didn’t bother to upload their times. I’m hoping for a bigger turnout for next week’s course of fire, as I’ll be pimping it up here, at Call me Ahab, and on Gun Nuts Radio as well.

This actually was a lot of fun; not only that it’s great practice for IDPA or IPSC style competition. The courses of fire for the first week were challenging, but not so challenging that I was frustrated or didn’t want to play. I’ve got the targets downloaded for the 2nd week’s match already, and I can’t wait to shoot it.

Statement on the Economy

From the Campaign of Ahab/Clawhammer for America.

My fellow Americans:

We have a time of great national crisis in our economy.  As you have probably heard, the House of Representatives yesterday rejected a bill which had great bipartisan support…bipartisan support for killing the bill.  In a moment of hysterical reaction to this titanic legislative failure, the Dow dropped over 700 points yesterday – but you don’t care about that, because most people don’t get how the Dow losing 700 points is going to affect the stuff they care about, like the cost of a gallon of milk.  And you know what, America?  There’s nothing wrong with that.

My opponents for the office of President are currently busing blaming one another for the failure of the economic bailout package; and although the package failing is probably the fault of Nancy Pelosi (nice speech there, Nance) I don’t think it’s a bad thing that it did fail.  America, do you really want your elected Representatives to ramrod a piece of legislation through the House that less that a quarter of the members have read?  A piece of legislation that’s based on imaginary numbers made up by the Treasury?  That’s right, imaginary numbers.  But these aren’t imaginary numbers like you had when you were eight, cool numbers like eleventeen and thirty-twelve; these are imaginary numbers in the sense that the 700 billion dollars “wasn’t based on a data point” they just wanted “a big number”.  That’s awesome!  I love that our government was planning the biggest financial intervention since the Great Depression and it wasn’t based on any of those silly little things like “data” or “objective facts”.

Now, as we look toward the coming 12-24 months, and as Congress tries to reintroduce the bill, many Americans are wondering “what’s next”?  Well, to put it shortly, what’s next is “the roller coaster of suck”.  You see, we in the US have what’s called a “consumer based economy”, which in simple terms means that our economy is supported primarily by people buying stuff.  Because banks are failing, it is going to be harder to get loans, credit cards, etc, which means that the purchasing of the stuff that drives our economy will be more difficult.

This is not necessarily a bad thing.  This means that people will have to be more qualified to get credit, which means that from a mathematical standpoint, there will be less people getting mortgages and cars they can’t afford.  Again, not necessarily a bad thing.  However, the reduction in consumer spending will cause an economic downturn, which means that maybe instead of buying the 50 inch plasma, you should put that money into a good old fashioned savings account.

Now, there is a solution to this economic mess from a consumer standpoint.  It is time for Americans to do as my grandparents’ generation did and cowboy up.  While I love my parents, their generation gave us Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi, so I’d rather not repeat that mess.  Meanwhile, my grandparents’ generation survived the Great Depression, and then because that wasn’t hard enough, they decided to go kick Hitler in the mouth.  It’s like an entire generation of Chuck Norris.  The point I’m making here is that yes, things could suck for a while.  But capitalism, and the fundamentals of our economy are still strong.  The Dow slid 700 points yesterday, but banks are still open, people are still going to work, and trucks full of stuff are moving about the nation.

Now is not the time to panic, America.  Now is the time to cinch up belts a wee bit tighter, and understand that the way we’re going to get out of this isn’t to have our elected Reps ramrod poorly thought out legislation down our throats, but instead with the same mental and national toughness that took us from a Great Depression, through a World War, and into one of the most prosperous times of our nation.

Thank you, and God bless America.

(Author’s note: While the above is intended to be humorous, it’s also true.  The economy could suck for a while; but the solution isn’t found in government, and it’s not found in bailing out banks that made poor business decisions or homeowners who made poor buying decisions.  The solution is in the spirit and will of the American people to realize that maybe we need to tighten things up, save some dough, and make sure that our government is taking responsible, well planned action that will benefit us and not create the largest government intervention since the Great Depression.)

There is a reason they’re called “improvised”

When referring to “improvised” self defense weapons – Breda makes the excellent distinction between a decoration/talisman and an actual weapon:

Her actual post is about a product that’s being marketed as a self-defense tool for women, it’s a silly little ring with a slightly pointed edge to use to strike an assailant.

If I’ve said it before, I have probably said it 10k times – contact weapons are great last resorts, primarily because of that whole “contact” part.  To use my friend Breda as an example; while she is an incredibly emotionally tough and resilient human being, it would not be difficult for me, as small as I am, to physically overpower her in hand to hand combat.  It is an unfortunate fact of life that men are generally stronger than women.  That’s why I eschew contact and close range weapons for personal defense except as a last resort, because they lack the ability to generate distance between you and your attacker while in use.  A weapon that requires a 145 pound man or a 100 pound woman to close with a larger and stronger assailant is a poorly designed weapon for your first line of defense.

Remeber Obama’s Truth Squads?

Original post here about how Obama has hired police officers and District Attorneys to “go after” people who say mean things tell the truth run false ads about him.  Well Gov. Blount of Missouri doesn’t like that so much, and says so in his official statement:

This abuse of the law for intimidation insults the most sacred principles and ideals of
Jefferson. I can think of nothing more offensive to
Jefferson’s thinking than using the power of the state to deprive Americans of their civil rights.  The only conceivable purpose of Messrs. McCulloch, Obama and the others is to frighten people away from expressing themselves, to chill free and open debate, to suppress support and donations to conservative organizations targeted by this anti-civil rights, to strangle criticism of Mr. Obama, to suppress ads about his support of higher taxes, and to choke out criticism on television, radio, the Internet, blogs, e-mail and daily conversation about the election.

Barack Obama needs to grow up. Leftist blogs and others in the press constantly say false things about me and my family.  Usually, we ignore false and scurrilous accusations because the purveyors have no credibility.  When necessary, we refute them. Enlisting
Missouri law enforcement to intimidate people and kill free debate is reminiscent of the Sedition Acts – not a free society.”

BUUUUUUUURN.  I am extremely glad that someone is attempting to draw attention to Obama’s intimidation tactics here; essentially what the St. Louis officials are doing is attempting to deprive people of their right to free speech under the color of law, and I’m 100% certain that doing that is well, illegal.

I’ve been arguing a lot lately about Obama with a lot of different people – many people still seem to believe that he’s “above the fray” and won’t “stoop to playing dirty”.  Well, if you looked up a definition of “dirty politics”, I’m pretty sure that using law enforcement and public officials to squash dissenting opinions would qualify as dirty pool.

I know that this is quite essentially preaching to the choir here – but it’s important that this sort of behavior not get swept under the rug.  Can you imagine the utter outrage you’d see in the media if John McCain had hired cops and DAs to prosecute people for running “false or misleading” ads?  It would be the end of the world, the NYT would be SCREAMING about the 1st Amendment, the HuffPo would have a collective apoplexy, and DailyKos would be screaming for a rope.  But when The Anointed One does it, no one seems to care, and that’s unnaceptable.

How to tell you’re taking it too far

If you get to a point where you’re forming your own .223 jacketed bullets from lead wire and spent .22 LR cases, that means you are now officially taking reloading “too far”.  You can still get help.  It’s not too late.

In all seriousness though, this is actually pretty awesome.  It really does take reloading to “the next level” – making even the lowly .22 LR casing something you might want to scoop up at the range.

The Devil went down to Indy

He was looking for some souls to steal

He was in a bind because he was way behind and looking to make a deal

When he came across this young man running a pistol and shooting it hot.

And the devil jumped on a shooting bench and said “boy let me tell you what

I bet you didn’t know, but I’m a bowling pin shooter too

and if you care to take a dare, I’ll make a bet with you.

Now you run a pretty hot pistol boy, but give the devil his due

I’ll bet a pistol of gold against your soul because I think I’m better than you”

The boy said: “Well my name’s Ahab, and it might be a sin,

but I’ll take your bet and you’re gonna regret because I’m the best that’s ever been”.

Ahab oil up your gun and run that bastard fast

‘Cause hell’s broke loose in Indy and the Devil wants to blast

and if you win you get this shiny pistol made of gold,

but if you lose the Devil gets your soul!

The Devil opened up his case and said “I’ll start this f*cking match”

and fire flew from his fingertips as he pulled the hammer back

And slammed a mag into the grip and it made a wicked click

Then he ran his gun at the pins at the pins shooting fast and slick.

When the devil finished, Ahab said “You’re pretty good ol’ clown”

“But look at my table and you’ll see that all my pins are down”

(Bridge)

The devil hung his head because he knew that he’d been beat

and he laid that golden pistol on the ground at Ahab’s feet

Ahab said: “Devil come back if you ever want to try again

Because I told you once you son of a bitch that I’m the best that’s ever been!”

Had a great time at the pin match, even managed to come away with a round win and a couple of tight 2nd/3rd place finishes.  Plus, it gave me a chance to turn “The Devil Went down to Georgia” into a song about bowling pin shooting.  Tam, Roberta, Turk and others were at the match as well – I’ve got some video of Tam running a GSG-5, that MP5 clone in .22 LR that I’ll post once I get it all edited together.  Expect that post first thing tomorrow – I ran out of time to get the video edited this weekend.  I should also point out that the pin had one of the most hilarious head to head stages – Tam was running a 10mm wheelgun and ran out of bbs for it.  We were literally running an “ammo relay” out to her as her competitor had run out of ammo as well.  It’s stuff like that as to why I love bowling pin shooting.

The other weekend fun that I was was I went down to Broad Ripple to meet up again with an excellent cadre of Midwestern bloggers, including my buddy Thirdpower who I haven’t seen since the NRA show.  Beer was had, food was served, and we ended taking what was probably the safest walk I’ve ever had on the Monon trail – there were probably only 9 or 10 guns on the trail.
