USPSA Single Stack Championships

Good luck to all the shooters in Paso Park this weekend who are shooting the Single Stack Nationals!  It looks like it’s going to be a great match – just from reading the list of registered competitors the shooting is going to be fast and furious.  There are couple of names that fans of action shooting may recognize:

  • Manny Bragg
  • Taran Butler
  • Matt Cheely
  • Julie Golob
  • Todd Jarrett
  • Doug Koenig
  • Rob Leatham
  • Kippi Leatham
  • BJ Norris
  • Dave Olhasso
  • Phil Strader

Any one of those guys (and ladies) could walk away with a match win and the Single Stack Nationals certainly brings out the top tier of competitors.  You’ll also see Michael Bane at the 2010 Single Stack Nationals – I hope he crushes his category and division!  Finally, a couple of my friends from Indiana are going to be up there.  Good luck to fellow shooters from Atlanta Conservation Club Jim Barbour, John Alley, and Bill DeZarn!  Shoot fast and make us proud!

I’ll be bringing you as much coverage as I can of the 2010 Single Stack Nationals starting on Thursday.  Good luck to everyone shooting!

USPSA Area 5 Championship

I just put my entry in yesterday for the USPSA Area 5 Championship and there is still time for you to get yours in as well.  I’ll be shooting my 625 in Revolver Division on a Saturday and Sunday morning squad.  Saturday PM I’ll be taking pictures and video for an upcoming series of articles for publication.  There are 12 revolver shooters at this match, so it looks like I’ll have to work extra hard to not finish in last place!

I’m pretty excited about this match; I managed to land myself in a squad with a Grand Master revolver shooter – I plan on watching as much as I can as I’m trying to make the jump from IDPA revolver shooting to USPSA revolver shooting.  Since this is my first year of seriously shooting USPSA, I’m shooting 3 major matches this year to dry and drink from the firehose.  The only way to get better at any game is to continually challenge yourself, and throwing myself into the deep end of the pool is definitely going to force me to elevate my game.  Plus, shooting USPSA will only make me better at my favorite game, IDPA.

I’m looking forward to the Area 5 Championship in June – I need to hit the range and practice my reloads!

Sig Sauer P226 USPSA

The P226 could rightfully be called the flagship gun of the Sig Sauer line up.  While introduced after the single stack P220 models, the P226 and its variants gained wide acceptance from military and law enforcement across the world.  Renowned for its accuracy, the P226 was also popular with many competition shooters, and although not as popular as Glock in the Production field, Sigs have a faithful and dedicated following in the USPSA and IDPA communities.

In 2009, Sig landed Max Michel as their flagship competitive shooter, and have continued to grow their shooting team since then, adding Matt Cheely among others.  It’s only fitting then that Sig Sauer would announce that same year that they would be producing a special edition P226 for the competitive shooting market – a P226 that is Production Division approved and ready to go out the door.

The Sig Sauer P226 USPSA edition comes from the factory with a Dawson fiber optic front sight, and Warren Tactical rear sight.  The Warren Tactical rear sight is the most popular sight in the Production division, whether it’s a Glock, a Smith & Wesson M&P, or a Sig P226.  The Warren Tactical sight provides a deep and wide rear sight channel which allows the most light possible around the front sight, creating a fast and accurate sight picture with a wide field of view.

The P226 USPSA edition also features Sig’s SRT, or Short Reset Trigger – this trigger maintains the safety and reliability of the double action/single action operating system found on Sig Sauer pistols, but shortens the reset by 60% allowing for faster follow up shots during competition shooting.  The P226 USPSA is available in two finishes, the black with nickel accents or stainless with black controls.  A “nice touch” feature on the Sig Sauer P226 USPSA is the slide engraving – every one of these pistols is engraved with the USPSA logo; and a portion of the proceeds of each pistol’s sale are donated to USPSA to help further the shooting sports with educational and training programs.

The Sig Sauer P226 USPSA has an MSRP of $1,246, however actual street price is usually right around $1000.  While it carries a much higher price point than some of the competitor Production ready guns on the market, the P226 USPSA definitely wins the style battle.  If you’re like me and you prefer the DA/SA trigger set up, this is a definitely a great gun to shoot competitively with!

Jerry Miculek Practical Rifle DVD

I’ve had a copy of Jerry’s Practical Rifle DVDs sitting on my desk for quite some time, and I’m finally getting down to watching them. I will have further updates to this post once I actually view the DVDs!

I’m watching the DVD now, and in the first one he’s covering a lot of technical info on the AR series rifles. Here’s something I didn’t know: if you shoot a lot of frangible ammo in your AR, you’ll need a twist rate that is faster than you’d expect for the bullet weight. A frangible round weighing 55 grains is much longer than a standard 55 grain round, so that faster twist rate is necessary to stabilize the gun.

Just wrapped up the first DVD. The first disk was very basic, covering everything from the components of the AR rifle up to the basics of sight picture, trigger control, and stance. For experienced competitors, disk 1 is okay to skip – however if you’re new to the AR rifle or competition shooting, it’s definitely a “must see” to gain an understanding of the fundamentals of the rifle.

Disk 2 takes a more in depth look at running the gun itself.  The best part is that it uses a gradual approach, starting with mounting the gun and firing single shots, then multiple shots one target, multiple targets, and so on.  Also included in the second DVD are tips on reloading and various shooting positions.  The nice thing about the series is that each DVD is broken down into easy to watch segments.  So if you’re a new shooter you can pop it in, watch the “reloading” segment, and then practice reloads based on what you saw.

The third disk covers some advanced techniques on the rifle, but again if you follow the iterative approach from the first two disks nothing in the third disk will be too challenging or difficult.  Personally though, the best part of disk three for me is the extended interview with Jerry where he talks about stage breakdown and match strategy.  The opportunity to listen to one of the all-time greats talk about how he breaks down a stage is something that every competitor can benefit from, whether you’re a D class shooter or in the hunt for your GrandMaster card.

My favorite part was where Jerry talked about his strategy on the first stage of the match.  He said that on stage 1, he’s in pure survival mode.  Don’t worry about the time, because it will probably be the worst stage you should that day – and that’s something that I’ve experienced myself.  My first stage is usually the stage where I’m the most nervous and amped up…which usually means I end up not shooting it as well as I’d like.  I’m going to try Jerry’s advice next match and see what happens!

The Jerry Miculek Practical Rifle DVD is a great package for beginning and experienced shooters alike.  It doesn’t matter if you’re learning to shoot your AR15 for the first time, as the DVDs are broken down so that it’s easy to follow – or if you’re an experienced shooter.  Jerry says that you start to get stagnant as a shooter once you accept a technique as “good enough”  – so it’s worthwhile to tinker with new ideas if you’re a veteran competitor.  Now that I’ve watched them, I need to saddle up and do some rifle shooting!

Thanks to Brownells for providing a copy of the DVDs for me to review.

Indiana State USPSA Sectional Match

The Indiana State USPSA Sectional match is coming up – sure, June 25th seems like a long way away, but before you know it the match will be here.  257+ rounds and 10 stages for a mere $85?  Totally worth it.  Get your entry form right here, get signed up and come out to Atlanta Conservation Club, the finest outdoor range in the Indy/Metro area on June25th-27th for the Indiana State USPSA Sectional Match.

I’ll definitely be there rocking the 625 – I’ve got the entire month of May to practice for this match, and I’ll be shooting Area 5 a couple of weeks prior to the State Match, as well as having already shot the Indiana State IDPA Championship the first weekend in June.  It’s going to be an awesome month!

Top Shot on the History Channel

The very first commercial for Top Shot aired last night during the premier of America: The Story of Us – it was probably 10:15-ish Eastern time when the commercial was show.  However, if you missed the first commercial, you can still see it because History posted the commercial on the Top Shot Facebook page.  Check it out!  I’m nearly giddy with excitement over the June 6th premier of the show, and I’ll definitely be posting about Top Shot as we get closer to the premier date and as the show airs.  Make sure to check back here for more info on Top Shot on the History Channel, but for now go watch the trailer.

Jessie Abbate sponsorship options

Paul Erhardt at DownRange.TV takes a look at where Jessie Abbate might end up now that she’s no longer with Team Glock.  He breaks it down from most likely to “not-gonna-happen” in the following order:

  1. Smith & Wesson
  2. Sig
  3. Springfield
  4. FNH
  5. Taurus (lolwut)
  6. HK
  7. Beretta
  8. CZ

Number 5 through 8 (Taurus through CZ) are pretty much “not going to happen”, although CZ is kind of a crazy wild card in that you have no idea what they’re going to do.  For example, in the US Production game, Glock is king, although the M&P is making a serious dent in that.  In IPSC-Europe, CZ is king – and although CZ really hasn’t gone after the American competition market like Glock has, you never know.

While he was pontificating, Paul also brought the funny:

The Illinois based company seems content to continue with Robbie Leatham as their standard bearer. Their lack of interest in other potential shooters, beyond Robbie’s wife Kippi of course, suggests they plan to stick with Robbie alone until the day when the battery on his electric wheelchair gives out.

I laughed.  In all seriousness though, Jessie Abbate being in the open market represents a huge opportunity for a gun company to lock up a lot of major titles each year.  Personally, I agree with Paul in that the smartest bet is the most obvious number 1 choice – Team Smith & Wesson.  They have spent the last couple of years establishing the largest team in competitive shooting, and picking up Jessie would give them an absurd 1-2 punch with Jessie and Julie Golob.

I’ll be following this as closely as possible, hopefully I can get you details as they come out!
