Books for Bianchi Cup

Being a reader (readers, readers of the open range) I rarely travel without bringing some kind of reading material with me. When I’m flying, it’s usually a copy of #GUN RAG MONTHLY, which does a marvelous job of entertaining me and keeping the godless hippie in the seat next to me from getting any ideas about “striking up a conversation, dude”. However, I’m driving to Columbia for this match, so when I do that, I usually throw a book or two in my bag for reading material during downtime. I try to make the books appropriate for the event, so here are two selections that are coming with me to Bianchi Cup.

Book 1: The Book of Five Rings, by Miyamoto Musahsi.
Book 2: Practical Shooting: Beyond Fundamentals by Brian Enos.

I doubt very much I could have picked two better books to keep my “mind right” for Bianchi than the two I’ve mentioned. Of course, if you think I should be taking something else, there is always the “comment” option.

I feel obligated to point out

That it is an utter travesty that this excellent video has less than 2 million views, while Kayne West’s latest song has over 20 million. Sure, GunNuts only pulls in 50k readers a year, but let’s make what little dent we can in that number.

I mean come on, who’s cooler, Ennio Morricone or Kanye West? And if you don’t realize that’s a rhetorical question, well, uh…yeah.

Ruger SR-556

The new Ruger is here, and it’s an AR! Not just any vanilla AR though, the SR-556 utilizes a gas piston operating system as opposed to the traditional AR operating system. The guys at GunBlast have a pretty good first look at the gun here, and of course you can also check the gun out on Ruger’s website; which by the way is getting hammered right now with hits.

According to Ruger’s website, the gun comes from the factory with the following features:

  • 6 Position M4 style stock
  • Hogue Pistol Grip
  • 3 Magpul 30 round mags (that’s actually pretty cool)
  • Troy Industries iron sights (also cool)
  • It’s covered in rails (seriously, it’s a railfarm out there)

You get all of these features for an MSRP of $1995, although the actual price on shelves should come out to be a bit lower than that.

The new Ruger SR-556 is a serious entry from Ruger into the AR15 market. By going the “gas piston” route instead of the traditional AR operating system, they’re able to set themselves apart in a market cluttered with AR15 pattern rifles. No word on whether they’re going to just sell an SR-556 upper, however I’ve got my fingers crossed for that!

Mobile Blogging at Gun Nuts Radio Blog

One of the neat things about having a phone with data access is that I can use the blogging interface to upload photos directly to the Gun Nuts Radio Blog.  While I’m on the road at Bianchi Cup, this gives me the freedom to snag a photo with my Blackberry camera and share it instantly with my readers.  While I’ll still be blogging here and taking “good” (term relative to my skill) photos with my real camera, the major posts and uploads like that won’t always happen on a regular timetable.  Think of the Gun Nuts Radio Blog like a Super TwitterFeed for all the info you could ever want on Bianchi Cup, through the eyes of a first time shooter.

Glock Sponsoring Bianchi Production Division

One more press release to round out the morning, Glock will be sponsoring and competiting in the new Production Division at the 30th Annual Bianchi Cup.

Dave Sevigny and Randi Rogers of Team GLOCK Shooting Squad will compete in the Production division using the very popular and winning GLOCK 34 pistol in 9×19, while Jessie Abbate will compete in the Open division with an S&J Custom GLOCK 17 designed specifically for Action Pistol competition.

The push that’s going towards getting new shooters into Bianchi Cup is fantastic.  As the press release says, Steel Challenge, USPSA, and IDPA enjoy tremendous participation in their Production/SSP divisions, with more shooters competing in those divisions than many of the others.  Bianchi’s Production division is a little more lenient than USPSA’s though, allowing for a wider array of firearms to be entered.  The main two qualifiers are that the gun has to have been or be a major catolog item, and not be a single action gun.

I leave for Bianchi Cup this Monday – during the time I’ll be blogging as much as I can here at GunNuts.Net, however I’ll also be using the mobile blogging software on my crackberry to post updates to the Gun Nuts Radio Blog.

Speaking of ICORE

International Confederation of Revolver Enthusiasts matches are coming to Atlanta Conservation Club starting the last weekend in May (which would be May 30th).  I’m extremely excited about ICORE at Atlanta CC, in part because I’ll be helping organize and run the matches.  The way I see it, you cannot shoot too much action pistol, and getting a wheelgun into my hands will only be a good thing for me in the other sports.  Plus, I figure I can start shooting a revolver in IDPA competition for a while.

For my Indiana readers – if you’re interested in ICORE at Atlanta Conservation Club, keep watching this space for details and updates.  I’m going to be working with Jeff initially to get me up and running, but I definitely want to turn these matches into something that people will come out and shoot.  I’ll have updates on the state of Indiana ICORE as I get them, as well as match announcements for local and area majors.

S&W Sponsors ICORE

Press release from DownRange.tv:

The International Confederation of Revolver Enthusiasts (ICORE) announced that Smith &Wesson, the legendary 157-year old firearms maker, will once again be the overall match sponsor for the 18th Annual International Revolver Championships which will be held in San Luis Obispo, Calif., at the Hogue Action Pistol Range June 5-7, 2009.

Of all the pistol matches in the world, now that I’m putting a Bianchi Cup under my belt, my number 1 “do want” action pistol match to attend is the ICORE Championship in California.  There’s a combination of reasons for this, first off being “I like action shooting”, but secondly being the location.  The Hogue Action Pistol range is located just north of San Luis Obispo, California, really right in between San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay.  The Central Coast region of California is easily one of my favorite places on earth, and given the opportunity I would move there in a heartbeat.  With scenery like this, who wouldn’t?

It doesn’t hurt that the Hogue Action Pistol Range is one of the best pistol ranges in the country either – while it’s not in the cards for this year, next year I’m hoping to be able to make the trip to California for the ICORE Championship so I can lose to Jerry Miculek.
