Civilian legal semi-automatic PPSh-43 pistol.

Or if that’s not your flavor, civilian legal semi-auto PPSh-41 rifle with fixed stock and 16 inch barrel.

Picture here.

Remember that Tokarev you could get for 200 bucks and all that ammo?  Get one of these and you’ll really have something fun to burn money with.

Don’t get too excited yet

As an FYI, we won’t really see a clear frontrunner for the nomination until after February 5th, when 20+ states are holding their primaries.  A win in New Hampshire would help candidates carry momentum into Super Tuesday, or whatever they’re calling it this year.

Since the Indiana primary isn’t until May, I’ve got quite some time before I can actually vote for a candidate.

The appeal of C&R

If you’re like me, you’re probably a little concerned about the possibility of an anti-gun chap like Romney, Rudy, or of course Hillary/Obama getting elected next year.  If you’re also like me, you kind of want to start stockpiling things like full and high capacity magazines, ARs, and ammo.

That’s why I’m glad I have a C&R.  For about $200 bucks, I can get a 7.62×25 Tokarev pistol, which is basically a knockoff of the ’03  Browning design, and then for about $120 I can get a boatload of 7.62×25 Romanian manufacture ball ammo.  By “boatload”, I mean 1,200+ rounds from Aim Surplus.  Sure it’s corrosive stuff, but if you clean your guns properly after use and remove the corrosive deposits, it won’t harm your firearms.  It’s nice and cheap practice ammo.  Plus, Wolf makes a decent hollow-point load for the 7.62×25 if you’re thinking about carrying it for defensive purposes; a role for which it would be suited in a cinch.

That’s one of the appeals of C&R, especially to me.  If you’re looking to get decent, proven defensive guns on a tight budget, it’s hard to beat having them shipped directly to your door.  With my C&R, I can get that Tok and 1200 rounds of ammo for about $300, then get an SKS and 1,000 rounds of Wolf 7.62×39 for another $350.  That means for $650 dollars I have a perfectly serviceable rifle and handgun combo.  They’re not going to win any beauty or accuracy contests, but they will get the job done.

I don’t think that anyone who is legally able should be denied the ability to defend themselves just because they can’t afford a $1500 AR15, and a $900 customized 1911.  Do I think that if they’ve got the scratch they should buy the best gun they can afford?  Of course I do; but sometimes you’ve only got $200 bucks to spend.

And I’ll certainly recommend a good quality surplus gun before I tell you to get a Hi-Point, Jennings, or one of those other things.  The nice thing about surplus guns is that (for the most part) they’re tested and proven designs.

2nd Amendment Blog Bash

Just a reminder about the 2nd Amendment Blog Bash, coming up in May at the NRA Annual Convention.

It’s going to be huge, and the word on the street is that Uncle might even make a presentation.

Here’s a list of all the bloggers that are interested or confirmed for the bash – I’ve already made my hotel reservations.

I’m really excited about this, I think it’s going to be a great time.

Huckabee wins Iowa Caucus

I’m not surprised, not even a little bit.  Okay, that’s a lie, because I didn’t expect Huckabee to hand Romney a near 10% trouncing like that, but I’m not really surprised that he won.  Nor am I surprised that Rudy placed under Ron Paul, since Rudy pretty much abandoned Iowa and New Hampshire to campaign in other states.

With 95 percent of Republican precincts reporting, Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas, had the support of 34 percent of voters, compared to 25 percent for Romney. Fred Thompson had 13 percent, McCain had 13 percent and Ron Paul had 10 percent.

Rudy had something like 4%, IIRC.

But what does it all mean?  Well, depends on whose campaign we’re talking about here.  For Huckabee, it means that his campaign will probably get a decent cash injection heading into New Hampshire and South Carolina.  He’s packed an awful lot of momentum on suddenly, which is good because early polls show Romney with a lead in New Hampshire.

Gov. Huckabee’s win hurts Romney the most, because it also represents the fact that the evangelical Republicans are pretty much rejecting him outright for Huckabee.  Fred Thompson and John McCain’s campaigns aren’t affected as much as one might think, because a win in Iowa does not mean that one will carry the rest of the primaries.

On the Democrat side, I think my wife had the best comment as to why women voters abandoned Hillary in favor of Obama.  She said “It’s Oprah.  As soon as she backed Obama openly, it was over.”  Cynical as that statement might be, I can’t but help feel like there’s a bit of truth to it.

Back to the Republican race, I really think that coming into Iowa, people were selling Gov. Huckabee short.  There are more than a few people who would like to pretend that the Republican party’s base isn’t composed of self described evangelical Christians; people who apparently are (at least in Iowa) going to be voting for Huckabee.   Of course, New Hampshire is a different animal entirely from Iowa, and will present a different sort of challenge for Gov. Huckabee to wrest from Romney.

I would have like for Fred Thompson to win, I really would have.  I felt like he was the true conservative candidate for the Republican party, but I don’t think that he’s going to pull it out now.  I may not agree with all of Gov. Huckabee’s positions, but I do believe that he’s certainly a better option than any of the remaining field of candidates.  Romney, Rudy, and McCain all have held positions that I cannot support at all; Huckabee at least seems as though he’s interested in moving forward and not playing partisan politics.

Fine Police Work

South Bend PD discovers that body in cemetery is actually dummy filled with straw.

Police arrived at the scene at around 7:15 p.m., and walked the entire length of the cemetery through the snow, reported the South Bend Tribune. Upon finding the location, they lifted the hat off the body to find a pumpkin instead of a human head.

I kid, I kid SBPD.  It was cold up there the other day, and the “entire length of the cemetery” in the snow and cold cannot have been pleasant.  In fact, I can imagine the officers now…

Cop 1: I swear to god, there had better be a dead body out here.  I had finally gotten the heat to the right temperature in my car.

Cop 2: Sarge, over here, I found it!

Cop 1: Thank god.  Alright, check him for…wait…lift up his hat.

Cop 2: Uh…it’s a pumpkin, Sarge.

Cop 1: SON OF A B*TCH.

You know, I take that back.  It probably went more like “Hey Rookie, go check that cemetery for a dead body.  I’m going to wait here and…uh…monitor the radio.”

People ask me

Why I don’t like smoking bans a lot, since I’m not a smoker any longer.  I have always maintained that I have no problem with businesses making the business decision to go smoke free, as it is their right to run their business as they please; no I have a problem with the government mandating that “thou shalt not smoke”.  If you really want to know why I have a problem with that, then you don’t really have to look much further than France:

They say it is undemocratic because it was not passed as a law through the Parliament but announced by government decree.

That’s how it happens a lot of the time here as well.  The governmet up and decides with no voter input to lay the banhammer on something.  I don’t like that.  I don’t care if it’s smoking, trans fats, or jumping out of airplanes with a parachute.

I guess another part of me looks around and is sort of confused that they banned smoking in France.  I mean come on, it’s FRANCE.

You’re kidding

People in San Francisco are actually holding a vigil for the tiger that attacked that teenager.

They lighted a bonfire Tuesday on Ocean Beach for Tatiana the tiger, an animal who created one tragedy and whose death was another one.

“That animal got a raw deal at our hands,” he said. “Tatiana was being a tiger. We humans are the ones that make the choices. The tigers don’t.”

You know, he’s right in that the tiger didn’t do anything inherently wrong, a predator is a predator and will behave, well, like a predator.  And I’m fine with tigers being tigers.

What I don’t get is people feeling sorry for that tiger when we decided that it was a threat.  Because just as the tiger was being a tiger, the police had just as much (if not more) of a right to be alive, and defend themselves from a large predatory animal with claws.  So they did the logical thing and protected the general populace.  Holding a vigil for an animal that was a threat to humans is stupid.

Stupid hippies.

CCW Holder stops robbery

But that’s not possible! It’s a well known fact that if a CCW holder is at the scene of a crime, they will only escalate the situation into a full blown shootout! [/sarcasm]

Thankfully, the hyperbole of the anti-gun crowd just simply isn’t true, especially in this instance.

The suspect gave up the money and his gun and took off his mask. The people who work at Buck’s say the suspect has been casing the place for days.

When police arrived, Charlie had the suspect on the floor.

Just so everyone is clear, an armed citizen with a CCW permit intervened on behalf of others and stopped a violent crime that was in progress. Had “Charlie” not been there, the suspect would have likely gotten away clean, or worse yet hurt an innocent person.

Now, I know that the anti-gun crowd will likely dismiss this as an “isolated incident”; which is pretty predictable for them.  The problem is that these “isolated incidents” keep popping up over and over again; almost like there is a pattern of armed citizens preventing criminal predations.

Sacked

The lead lawyer in for DC in the DC/Heller case has been sacked.

What does this mean for DC’s chances against the Supremes?  Probably not much, actually.  There is likely a very deep pool of sharks wanting to take a crack at this one, although I could be wrong.

Apparently this guy was fired because he was seen as a loyalist to Linda Singer, the DC Attorney General who resigned in Dec after (apparently) scrapping with Fenty’s General Counsel.
