Vigilantism

Apparently, according to some people, your child acting in self defense by punching a bully would count as “vigilantism” and would therefore be bad.  I saw the link at Murdoc’s, and I didn’t believe it until I actually read the entire thing.

The good stuff in the comments to the thread at Dean’s Place – where a commenter named Naftali (which humorously is a Hebrew name for “struggling” or “one who struggles”) is saying that it’s an act of vigilantism when your child defends themselves from a bully, or if a woman is groped on a train and she smacks the person doing the groping.

It’s too bad for Naftali that there is a pretty widely accepted definition of vigilantism, which doesn’t including acting in the preservation of one’s person.  For example, let’s look at the situation of being groped on the train: in that moment when the offender makes contact, you have no idea what their intentions are.  There is no way to differentiate the touch of someone who just wants to cop a feel from the touch of someone who wants to harm you – but don’t do anything about it, because if you fight back it’s vigilantism and that’s bad.

Don’t even get me started on the part about kids fighting back against bullies – the current school policies against self-defense (which often punish the victim for defending themselves equally if not more harshly than the aggressor) are a big reason why I’m seriously considering homeschooling my children.

Obama Leading Hillary in Indiana

I wasn’t kidding when I said I would take advantage of Indiana’s open primary system to torpedo Obama. Now, this news from CNN that he’s leading Hillary by 5 percentage points in my own state is one straw closer to being the straw that breaks my back.

I’ve actually spent a lot of time thinking about this, and what I’m ultimately doing is gaming my “worst case scenario” here. To me, Obama winning is worst case scenario: worse so than Hillary winning because at least with Hillary I have the teeny-tiny hope that she’s politically savvy enough to remember being burned by the gun issue in the 90’s and that she’s not stupid enough to try and pull some shenanigans if she gets elected. Also, based on Obama’s recent statements, I think that she’s slightly less of a socialist than he is.

So, come May and the Indiana primary, I’ll cross party lines and vote for Hillary over Obama. I’m still voting for McCain in November, but right now I’m trying hedge my bets so that the worst case scenario of McCain not winning doesn’t give me someone who I am beginning to find almost offensive in his daily rhetoric.

Tell me something I don’t know

Michelle Obama, in an attempt to explain away her husband’s statements about rural gun owners unintentionally hits the nail right on the head.

“If I’m telling you something that you don’t know, let me know,” she said. “Maybe things are better, and I’m just missing the boat and I’m out of touch.”

What really kills me is that even when she’s trying to sound like she’s joking around and (failing at) being light, she stills comes off as a condescending elitist.

BAG Day!

BAG Day is here! What did the Gun Fairy bring you for BAG Day? Unless something goes horribly wrong in the next 10 or so hours, the Gun Fairy will be bringing me a nicely re-blued Remington Model 11 20 gauge receiver/action. Just the action and receiver, I’ll have to buy the stock and barrel later from elsewhere. But the price was so good, and I love buying things on Gunbroker so I just had to have it. I’m going to put a nice 18/19 inch barrel on it and use it for a home defense scattergun, a category in which my gun locker has been sorely lacking.

The finished product should look roughly like the below, although in 20 gauge instead of 12. Photo by Oleg Volk, lifted from The Arms Room. It’s a gorgeous photo, click to enlarge it. I hope that mine looks half that good.

No more Wal-Mart

Going into further detail on the Bloomberg/Wal-Mart love fest, I want to expound on why it’s important to spend your gun dollars at stores that support our sport. Wal-Mart is the biggest retail chain in the US, and unfortunately it’s one of very few “big box” stores that sell ammunition, and the only one I can think of that sells firearms. Meier is the only other big box I can think of that sells ammo, and they don’t sell firearms there.

Wal-Mart getting into bed with anti-gunners is exactly the same as the bad old days of the Smith & Wesson deal; the difference is that S&W has come a long way and spent a lot of money to fix the damage done to their reputation during the Clinton years. I don’t think Wal-Mart will be interested in fixing their reputation, since firearms and ammo aren’t their primary revenue generator.

But what Wal-Mart is forgetting is that firearms and ammo are a huge deal – if all gun owners stopped buying from Wal-Mart it would certainly have an affect on their bottom line. I know it’s unrealistic to ask every gun owner for a total boycott of Wally World, but I would like to entreat everyone to spend their sporting dollars at stores that support the shooting sports.

Take your money to Gander Mountain, take it Cabelas, Bass Pro Shops, or even better; take it to your local gun shop. Wal-Mart has said that they don’t care about gun owners, they don’t care about your right to privacy, and that they’d rather cater to anti-gun Mayor Bloomberg than the people that make up a decent chunk of their consumer base.

I understand that me boycotting Wal-Mart will have little affect on their bottom line, but if enough gun owners say “No More Wal-Mart” we might actually be able to get them to notice. You can contact Wal-Mart corporate at this link, however it’s important to remember that the person who reads your feedback will likely never have heard of Mayor Bloomberg or know what his coalition is all about. Sebastian has a good example of how to express yourself, as well as demonstrating excellent restraint. I understand how he feels, I also wanted to light Wal-Mart up and tell them exactly where they could stick up; however raw shouting anger usually doesn’t get the point across very well.

Wal-Mart and Bloomberg

Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest retail chain has entered into a devil’s agreement with Mayor Bloomberg of New York.

J.P. Suarez, the chief compliance officer for Wal-Mart Stores Inc., appeared with outspoken gun control advocate Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York to announce the changes at a gathering of Bloomberg’s group Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

As if that’s not bad enough, here is a list of the changes to Wal-Mart policies that will be enacted:

  • Creating a record and alert system to record when a gun sold at Wal-Mart is later used in a crime. If the purchaser of that gun later tries to buy another gun at Wal-Mart, the system would alert the sales clerk of the prior buy and could refuse to make the sale.

So, I buy a shotgun at Wal-Mart which is then stolen from my house and used in a crime without my knowledge. I then go to Wal-Mart 6 months later to buy another shotgun, and I find out I suddenly can’t buy a gun? Then what, they call the police to come down and grill me about my legal gun purchase? You can add the fact that this system also creates a de facto gun registry for all firearms purchased at Wal-Mart to my reasons why I’m disgusted with this.

  • Retaining the recorded images of gun sales in case law enforcement wants to view them later as part of an investigation.

Oh good, I love being videotaped and having those images given to law enforcement without my consent while I’m conducting a perfectly legal transaction. Wal-Mart is basically saying that “we’re going to take your picture (without your consent) and possibly give that picture to the cops (without your consent) if we think you’ve done something naughty.”

  • Expanding background checks of employees who handle guns and expanding inventory controls.

I actually have nothing to say about this last one, I’m fine with Wal-Mart wanting to make double-plus sure that people who they employee are squeaky clean, that’s their right.

This article just hit the AP a short time ago, here is the statement of Chris Cox, Executive Director of NRA-ILA:

“Today’s announcement by New York City (NYC) Mayor Mike Bloomberg comes as no surprise to National Rifle Association (NRA) members across the country. None of these joint Wal-Mart/Mayor Bloomberg initiatives will lower crime, because they ignore the real cause of crime — criminals.

Mayor Bloomberg has long confused his NYC mayoral podium for a national bully pulpit from which he feels entitled to push his personal gun control agenda outside NYC. Now, instead of trying to impose his philosophy on other cities and states, Mike Bloomberg has set his sights on our country’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

Bloomberg proves his disdain for individual firearm ownership, and his assertion that only the privileged should own a firearm and should have the right to defend themselves and their loved ones.

NRA will continue to oppose any scheme that puts burdens on law-abiding Americans and not on criminals.”

I’m in 100% agreement with Sebastian, that I will never again buy firearms related products from Wal-Mart. This only reinforces my desire to use my dollars at stores and organizations that support the right to keep and bear arms. Sure, it’s a few dollars here and there, but it’s a few dollars that will be going to Midway USA, Cabelas, and Gander Mountain instead of Wal-Mart.

The other thing that really upsets me about this is that it puts a lot of rural gun owners in a bind – thanks to Wal-Mart’s effectiveness at putting mom-and-pop shops out of business, many rural gun owners don’t have a lot of options for places to purchase their ammo from, which leaves them with the choice of paying high shipping costs for ordering online or having their money used to support Mayor Bloomberg’s campaign against every single illegal guns.

Mayors against all Illegal guns

Apparently, MAIG has a youtube channel, with just one lonely video.

I would tell you to comment on the video, except for the fact that the comments on youtube videos are a filthy disgusting cesspool of semi-functional retards, and I don’t want you guys to have to burn your eyes out or anything.  Honestly, youtube video comment wars are one of the worst forms of internet discussion out there – if you’re going to refute the video do it on a blog, don’t wade in that mound of crap.
