Only the police should have automatic weapons

Because they’re so good at keeping track of them.

Wayne police are trying to find a submachine gun that’s been missing for at least a week.

The department noticed the MP5 weapon missing during an inventory of the arsenal.

I don’t normally pick squares with cops, but these are the people that the Brady Bunch and more specifically, the law in New Jersey, would have believe are the only one’s competent enough to own automatic weapons.  Guys that lose automatic weapons out of inventory.

NFL Conference Championship

Wow, I had a rough week with my picks last week.  Who would have though that the Colts’ defense would just give that one away to the Chargers like that.  I will admit that my pick of the Seahawks was based on regional optimism, so I wasn’t too surprised when the Pack took them down.  I correctly picked the Pats to win; but then Eli Manning had to go and be the better Manning brother, which was FANTASTIC.  Honestly, seeing the Cowboys lose almost made up for the Colts loss; cry, Tony Romo, cry.

Anyway, on to the picks.

AFC Championship

The matchup no one thought they’d see, Chargers-Patriots.  So, here’s what happens.  The Chargers’ luck runs out, and the Patriots stomp them into red paste.  Honestly, I don’t think that this one will be close.  Pats win by like 30 or something.

On a side note, the general consensus amongst all my “bleed Colts blue” friends is that they hate the Patriots so much that they want the Chargers to beat them, and then lose the Super Bowl to whomever.

NFC Championship

I would like to point out, that I have picked against the Giants in every single one of their playoff games, despite the fact that I like Eli Manning and that Giants RBs carried all three of my fantasy teams this season; I keep expecting them to implode.  But I actually want them to win, so I’m going to pick the Packers.  The weather in Green Bay is supposed to be cold and windy this Sunday, and while the cold won’t hurt Eli that much, he pretty much sucks in the wind.  So I’m picking Green Bay and Brett Favre to return to the Super Bowl (where the Patriots will stomp them) by beating the New York Football Giants 30-14.

Since I’ve been consistently wrong this season, don’t be surprised when we have a San Diego vs. New York Super Bowl.

DOJ sells out US firearms dealers

The Attorney General has agreed to allow Mexican authorities access to the DOJ’s E-Trace data.

The US has said it will give Mexico access to an electronic database to trace weapons smuggled from the US to powerful drug gangs across the border.

I would have less of a problem with this if it wasn’t for the fact that I know from personal experience how hopelessly corrupt the Mexican justice system is.  To use a colorful turn of phrase, I’d call it rotten to the core.

I’m also opposed to it because I don’t like that we’re essentially kowtowing to the demands of a foreign government to surrender information on our citizens to said foreign government.  It only reinforces that we’re completely willing to compromise our sovereignty on an issue that appears to an internal problem with Mexico.

The core issue is that the Mexican smuggling gangs often better armed than the Mexican authorities; often with automatic weapons.  The Mexican government says that they gangs are having said automatic weapons smuggling into Mexico from the US.  We’ve discussed this in the past as well, and words like “ludicrous” and “far-fetched” were tossed around.  Ask anyone who has ever done law enforcement in that area about where the Mexican gangs are getting AK47s from, and I’m pretty the US won’t make the top five.

So, ultimately what we have here is exactly what I’ve said before.  The US government selling out the best interests of their citizens to placate a foreign government which has demonstrated nothing but contempt for our laws.  Good job, Mr. Mukasey.

Details on Georgia Carry Bill

From the ATL Journal Constitution on the freshly gutted HB 89, which will be voted on by the full Senate on Thursday.  The provisions that are in the bill break down as follows.

— An owner can ban all firearms from his property at all times.

— A business owner who leases the property can ban all firearms from the property, if the landlord agrees.

— A business/property owner can ban all firearms from the company parking lot if there is no public access to the company lot.

— A business/property owner can’t prohibit an employee from keeping a firearm in a company parking lot if it is open to the general public — and if those members of the public aren’t specifically prohibited from bringing firearms with them.

That last part only applies to the state’s 300,000 some holders of CCW permits, not to all residents as originally hoped for by the NRA.  Additionally, not mentioned above is a provision that allows CCW holders to carry in State Parks.

Like I said yesterday, the “Extreme Makeover” done to this bill essentially reduces it to the status of “moral victory” for the NRA.  They definitely didn’t get everything they wanted out of the bill, but they got a little bit of something, which is nice I guess.

What’s going on with the other bill, HB 915 supported by Georgia Carry is anyone’s guess.  I’ve heard from some people that it’s alive and well, I’ve heard from others that it’s dead in the water.  The nice thing about the total re-write that occurred with HB 89 is that HB 915 would now no longer effectively cancel HB 89; that allows me to throw my hope behind HB 915 passing, although I doubt that’s going to be the case.

As mentioned above, the Georgia Senate will be voting on the revised version of HB 89 today; please contact your legislators (if you’re in Georgia) and express your support for the bill.

Protip for criminals

If you are a convicted felon, it is probably not a good idea to post a video of yourself on Youtube that shows you brandishing firearms and telling the cops to come and get you.

Because they will.

Two alleged gang members who taunted the Miami Dade Police Department in a video posted on YouTube have been arrested by U.S. agents and charged with federal firearms violations.

I love it when criminals make law enforcement’s job that much easier.

More on Georgia Carry bills

It seems that HB 89, the NRA backed bill, has undergone significant changes by a Georgia Senate committee.  According to the article I found at Arms and the Law, they changed the bill so that it only applies to people with CCW permits in Georgia, but they did add a provision which allows CCW holders to carry in state parks.

Unfortunately, it appears that HB 915 (the other CCW bill) is a dead in the water right now, and HB 89 has been reduced to the status of “moral victory” for the NRA and Georgia.  It’s one of those situations where sure, a little change is better than none, but it doesn’t do nearly enough to fix the serious problems that Georgia has with their carry laws.
