National Park Carry

I didn’t get this up on Friday as I was attending to other matters, but the Department of the Interior is officially going to allow carry in National Parks now.

DOI announced the rule change today and will publish the new regulations in the Federal Register. The new regulations allow right-to-carry permit holders to exercise their Second Amendment rights on national park and wildlife refuges in those states that recognize such permits. The move will provide consistency across our nation’s federal lands and put an end to the patchwork of regulations that governed different lands managed by different federal agencies. In the past, Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service lands allowed the carrying of firearms, while lands managed by DOI did not.

Now, this is different from the original proposed rule, which would have had the federal regulation simply match the state regulation: i.e. if it was legal to carry in a state park in your state of residence, it would then be legal to carry on DOI lands.  The new rule has been written so that it is legal to carry on DOI lands, regardless of whether or not your state allows carry in state parks.  From Sebastian:

Except that the rule that was eventually adopted differs from the original proposed rule, in that the state in question must specifically prohibit carry in National Parks, or federal lands.

This is good news for gun owners; as it allows us to maintain our self-defense standing without regard to National Parks.

I have un-failed myself

Thanks in no small part to the kind folk at M1911.org and my good friend Tam, I managed to fix the problem with my Para P16-40 Limited.  It turns that the diagnosis of the leaf spring being slightly out of whack was 100%, and after two tries (and a significant amount of cursing) I managed to get all the parts to line up correctly.

While I was trying to figure things out, probably the most helpful thing I found was this video at the m1911.org site; which shows in glorious 3d the reassembly process for the 1911 pistol.

Honestly, seeing the leaf spring go in correctly in that video (and watching it about 4 times) was a real big help in making sure that all the parts in the gun were aligned correctly. And it still took me two tries, but when I was done, I felt good about it – sense of pride and ownership and all that.

No steel for me

Friday Night Steel at Marion County Fish and Game is on for this weekend…but I won’t be there.  I had completely forgotten that this Friday is my company’s holiday party, and good politics and a love of free beer dictates that I should probably be there instead of out banging plates with the Gun Blog 9mm.

I am going to try and get up to the Steel Challenge match at Atlanta CC the Sunday after though – it’s been too long since I fired some bullets downrange.

IDPA Match Canceled

If you were planning on shooting the IDPA match tomorrow at Atlanta Conservation Club, it has been canceled due to potentially dangerous weather situations, namely ice.  I’m all for realistic training, but loaded guns+movement+ice=recipe for bullets going where bullets shouldn’t go, and safety is still the number one goal.

We’re hopefully going to be able to shoot a match this coming January, if the weather will cooperate.

Survivorman

I’m watching Survivorman on the Discovery Channel, and the host is simulating a hunter who is lost in the forest with his hunting partner. I’ve always liked Les Stroud, and now I like him even more. Why, do you ask? Because for his choice of hunting shotgun, he has none other than a Remington Model 11 slung over his shoulder.

And we all know who designed that gun, right?

H-S Precision releases statement on Lon Horiuchi controversy

Link here, copy and pasted below.

H-S Precision has received comments relating to individual testimonials in our 2008 catalog. All of the testimonials focused on the quality, accuracy and customer service provided by H-S Precision.

The management of H-S Precision did not intend to offend anyone or create any type of controversy. We are revising our 2009 catalog and removing all product testimonials.

Now, this is my personal opinion, and nothing else, but honestly, that feels less than sincere to me.  Compare that to Jim Zumbo, who not only recanted, but went and learned black rifles with Ted Nugent, or Cooper Firearms, who asked their director (and company founder) to step down.  To me, this reads like a “sorry your feelings got hurt” apology.

Not News

Anti-gun group performs study and gets results that agree with their bias.

Protip: when your group’s name is “Mayors Against ‘Illegal’ Guns”, no one will be surprised when your “study” shows that guns r bad.  I eagerly await the publishing of the actual study so it can be debunked in about 20 minutes by the internet.

2nd Protip: Don’t base your “crime” study on the ATF’s trace data, as the ATF itself says that you shouldn’t do that with their data.  But whatever.
