Block the Holder nomination

This is the letter I sent yesterday to every. single. Republican. on the Judiciary Committee – I will do my part to block the nomination of Eric Holder as attorney general.

Senator [Name]

I am writing in regards to the pending confirmation hearings for Eric Holder, who has been nominated by President Elect Obama to fill the office of Attorney General in the upcoming administration.  I strongly urge you to do everything within your power to block the nomination of Mr. Holder as AG.

During his previous work  for the Justice Department, Mr. Holder displayed a tremendous lack of regard for the Constitution, as well as a willingness to push for increasingly restrictive gun control laws.  During a critical Supreme Court case (DC vs. Heller) Mr. Holder signed on to a brief supporting the rejected opinion that the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution establishes a collective right to bear arms, and not an individual right.  This collective right interpretation was rejected by all 9 Justices, including those dissenting from the majority opinion.

It is my belief that if successfully appointed as Attorney General, Mr. Holder will continue to erode the freedoms of law abiding citizens, by using his powers as the highest law enforcement officer in the nation to influence and increase our already myriad gun control laws.  It is because of this that I again urge you to block the appointment of Mr. Holder to the office of Attorney General, and force President-Elect Obama to nominate a candidate who respects the entirety of the Constitution.

Regards,

Caleb

Girls and Revolvers

Breda and Mike took Breda’s mom to the range this weekend, and a rather predictable thing happened.  The gunstore clerk recommended a .38 Special Airweight snubby as an ideal defense gun for Breda’s mom.

Now, make no mistake, I have nothing against .38 Special snub nosed guns.  But for the life of me, I’ll never understand why so many people are under the impression that these guns are the bee’s knees for first time shooters and women for self-defense.  It’s an extremely difficult gun to learn to shoot well – the sight radius is small, recoil can be unpleasant when shooting +P self-defense loads, the trigger pull is long and difficult to master, etc.  I’m not saying that women can’t or shouldn’t carry snubbies, but for the life of me I’ll never understand why people think that it’s such a great gun for “first time CCW” people.

Mossberg LBA Trigger system

Check out The Gunshots for a review of Mossberg’s new bolt action rifle trigger, called the “Lightning Bolt Action Trigger“.

At first glance, the casual observer might deem the LBA trigger merely an imitation of Savage’s 5-year-old AccuTrigger, and indeed, the concept is the same: The trigger blade mechanism blocks the sear from releasing the striker until the blade is fully depressed. However, there are some distinct differences, and they aren’t all cosmetic. (It’s a lightning bolt. Get it?)

I’m generally excited to see factory bolt action rifles coming from the factory with good triggers on them.  One of the unfortunate downsides of our litigious society is that it has been a matter of general fact that factory rifle triggers basically suck. I’m glad to see that Mossberg is joining Savage in finding a way to improve the triggers on their guns.

Now if I could just get a Remington Model 700 VTR in .223 with a great factory trigger, I’d be ready to go coyote-whacking.

Tomorrow on Gun Nuts Radio

We’re going to be talking about open carry – which is a subject that I personally can’t believe we haven’t featured yet.  Joining us tomorrow night on our open carry show will be Meleanie Hain, the Pennsylvania soccer mom and open carry advocate who had her carry permit revoked, then returned after open carrying at her child’s soccer game.

As usual, you can listen live and join the discussion at www.blogtalkradio.com/gunnuts at 9pm Eastern time.  During the top half of the show, Breda and I will be chatting with Ms. Hain, and then we’ll open up the phone lines at (347) 539-5436 for your call ins and questions. We’re definitely looking forward to this tomorrow night – Open carry is an issue in the pro-gun community about which people are incredibly passionate, and it should spark some great discussion. Be part of the discussion tomorrow night at 9pm at www.blogtalkradio.com/gunnuts!

Buy my gun

Except it’s not really a gun.  Well, sort of.  According to the BATFE, blackpowder firearms are not “firearms”, which means they can be transferred between individuals across state lines without a 4473 form.

I’m currently selling my Pietta clone of the ’58 Remington, which is a .44 cap-and-ball revolver.  However, what makes this gun cool is that with the pistol, I’m also selling a Kirst Konverter, a 5 shot SASS legal cylinder which allows you to fire cowboy action .45 Colt loads through the gun.  Check out the auction on Gunbroker.

Polar Opposites

I managed to escape this weekend’s IDPA match without shooting a no-shoot.  Instead, on one stage I completely forget to shoot a target, which gave me the following penalties: -10 target points, 1 procedural, and 1 failure to neutralize.

Then the rest of the day I shot screamingly well to manage to salvage a top 10 finish.  I’ll just keep saying to myself that I got my major brain fart of the year out of the way at the first match, so when I go down to Gunny’s at the end of the month and shoot for prizes, I’ll be ready.
