But we should totally trust the Iranians with nuclear refining technology, right? I mean, it’s not like they’re trying to smuggle weapons to Hezbollah or anything.

Taurus 9mm 1911 available soon
At the 2009 SHOT SHOW, one of the pistols I was enamored with was Taurus 9mm 1911 pistol. I like 1911s, I like 9mm, and I like not spending a boatload of money on a gun. While some people don’t like Taurus guns, and perfectly entitled to that opinion, the Taurus semi-autos that I’ve owned have worked reliably. Admittedly, I’ve never truly wrung one out for the course of 10-20,000 rounds, but they have worked.
That’s why there’s a part of me that’s very excited for when the Taurus 9mm 1911 hits shelves. It’s cataloged in the Gun Genie at Gallery of Guns, but no units are in stock…yet. Usually once they get in the Gun Genie, it’s only a matter of time before they’ll be in your and my hands to take them out and shoot.
The Taurus 1911s are not perfect – don’t fool yourself into thinking that you’re getting a custom shop 1911 or a high end “tricked out” gun. You are however getting a gun with a forged steel frame and a forged steel slide – which will make an excellent platform for the inevitable customization that most 1911 shooters do.
Fighting from a vehicle
The Firearm Blog has a great guest post up from a writer that just took a class at the Sig Academy on fighting from a vehicle. Interestingly, the 9mm seems to be the best round for fighting from inside a vehicle, as it exhibited a much better ability to penetrate windshield glass without fragmenting catastrophically.
I knew it!
Mas Ayoob expects Ruger to start making a 1911 soon. When the SR-556 was announced, I wondered in a couple of places about how long it would be before Ruger dug their fingers into the crowded 1911 market. If I see a SR1911 or something at SHOT 2010 or 2011 I would not be surprised.
STI announces new firearms
Prior to the 2010 SHOT SHOW, STI has announced several new firearms will be added to their line of pistols.
Hit the link to Ammoland for the overall details, which include launching several existing pistols in .40 S&W, and most interestingly to me, the GP6-C with a 5 inch barrel. The GP6 pistol has been gaining popularity in some competition circles, with the “C” version being set up specifically for competition shooting with a Bo-Mar style rear sight and a fiber optic front sight. From what I understand, it’s quite popular in the European IPSC community, and has undergone some pretty severe tests of its shooting ability with hundreds of thousands rounds through various frame.
Gun Nuts Last Night: Too Much Awesome
Oh that’s right, if you missed the live broadcast of last night’s Gun Nuts Radio then you flat missed the boat. Luckily for you, you can atone for this by downloading last night’s episode, and listening to Kathy Jackson, Tam(!), and LawDog(!!!!). At the end of the show, when we started taking callers, we just ran out of time – Kathy is such an excellent guest that she could hold forth on self-defense issues for men and women for easily a lot longer than I’ve got on a one hour show. If you want to hear all about the book, Lessons from Armed America, or if you want to get some solid self-defense advice from a real expert in the field, click here to listen to last night’s show. Of course, there is an .mp3 of the show as well.
Gun Nuts Radio is also available on
.
Join us next week at 9pm Eastern time as we talk to Ashley Varner, NRA lobbyist for the State of Indiana about Indiana’s gun laws, the Chicago Gun Ban case, and other legal and political topics! Don’t miss Gun Nuts Radio each Tuesday night at 9pm Eastern time! Also, check out the store to pick Gun Nuts Gear, including the Tactical Coffee ClayMug!
Politics!
Republican candidates swept the gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey, which are both states that haven’t had a governor from the GOP in over a decade. But CNN tells me that this isn’t a referendum on Obama, despite the fact that he campaigned for both of the Democrat candidates. No, CNN tells me that the most important thing that could be observed in this election is that in a NY Congressional district, Republican infighting cost them the seat. Which it did, that much is true – but CNN is devoting as much screen space to making it sound like the GOP is crumbling as they are to covering the Republican’s stunning wins in VA and NJ.
It’s almost like their bias is showing or something.
Tactical Thoughts
One of the most popular questions you see posted on gun forums is some variation of “what do you do when you hear a noise at 1am?” Invariably, when this is posted, you’ll get a range of internet-commando answers from “grab the 870 and go hunting” to “tactically clear every room, slicing the pie like a machine”. Maybe one or two people will actually have a plan and have put some thought into the danger and difficultly of clearing a house by yourself in the dark.
In hopes of preventing people from making tactically unsound decisions, here is my well thought out plan for when “things go bump in the night.” One thing to bear in mind is that I do not have children, so the only people in my house that need protection are my wife and me.
- Awakened by noise
- Roll over, look at alarm panel. If alarm is still set and not going off, assume cats are wreaking havoc on my house and go back to sleep.
- If alarm is going off, the klaxon on that thing will have already roused me from any slumber, as well as waking any dead people within 2 miles. Seriously, it’s LOUD.
- Shut and lock bedroom door. Send wife into bathroom with telephone to call 911.
- Loudly proclaim to God and any intruders that if they come through that door, I’m going to shoot them. Hunker down behind concealment at 45 degree angle off the door.
- Shoot stuff that isn’t wearing a shiny badge that says “police” if they come through the door.
Seriously folks. Get an alarm system. I don’t have it because I believe the TV commercials that it will magically scare off burglars or criminals, I have it because if someone tries to break in to my house at 1am, I’m going to know about it before they get upstairs to try and hurt me.
Secondly, don’t try and clear your house. If you don’t have kids, hunker down in a room with one point of entry, and be prepared to shoot if someone tries to breach your point of entry. Stay on the phone with 911 so that you’ll know when the cops are at the door so you don’t shoot or get shot by the cops. Whatever you do, don’t try and clear your house by yourself. It’s tactically unsound to abandon an easily defensible position like your bedroom to go searching for an “intruder”, and it’s a pretty awesome way to get yourself killed in the process.
