.22 Mag vs. 5.7x28mm

After reading through this article at The Firearm Blog, I’d now like someone to do actual side by side ballistic testing of 5.7x28mm ammo vs .22 Magnum ammo.  Both from pistol length barrels and carbine length barrels.

Off the top of my head, the best platform for this would be one of the T/C Encore or Contender guns.  Because they’re modular, all you’d need to do would be to get a 16 inch .22 Magnum barrel, a 16 inch 5.7x28mm barrel for the rifle length test, and then get a set of 5 inch barrels in both calibers for the pistol test.  This way you can eliminate barrel length as a variable in terminal performance.

As much as I love the .22 Magnum, it’s not (despite what the internet told you) the same ballistically as the 5.7 round.  The round fired from the Five-seveN is a much more aerodynamic bullet, as well as using powder optimized for pistol use.  Of course, this is probably one of those things that I’ll never actually get the chance to test, which is really too bad – I think I’d be an interesting side by side comparison.

Do not be that guy

Specifically, this guy.  In that thread at INGO, someone is complaining that his wife doesn’t like guns, so Johnny Genius offers up this fantastic piece of advice:

you need to have a buddy “break in” and scare the bejesus outta her. shell start singing a different tune.
I’m reminded of a recent episode of Gun Nuts Radio – Pax from the Cornered Cat was our guest, and we had the pleasure of being joined by LawDog for moment.  LawDog was kind enough to inform us and our listeners that doing what is described in that thread, if you actually go through with a plan like that is generally illegal.  In most jurisdictions, it’d fall under the crime of “terroristic threats”, which is a legal term of art that means “illegally scaring the bejesus out of someone”.
The moral of the story is that it’s stupid to even suggest that sort of thing, and even stupider to go through with that sort of thing.

Kel-Tec PMR-30

In a word: WANT.  It seems that with the AWB firmly in the dirt, and the Obama administration running as far away from gun control as they can, that Kel-Tec decided the time was ripe to resurrect the former Grendel P-30, which was a 30 shot semi-automatic pistol chambered for .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire, or more commonly “.22 Magnum”.  The new gun Kel-Tec PMR-30 is clearly styled after the FN Five-seveN, which is definitely a step up in appearance from it’s technological father.

For my part, I want one of these guns so bad it hurts a little bit.  I have a sick, twisted obsession with the .22 Magnum cartridge, and own more than a couple of guns chambered for it.  Semi-auto pistols in .22 Magnum have always been something of a rarity, as it’s hard to get the long, skinny cartridge to feed right in an autopistol.  That’s also not even taking into account that the .22 Mag is designed to be fired from a rifle, so you have to work some neat engineering tricks to manage the chamber pressures.

But you know, all that doesn’t matter.  Sometimes you see a gun, and you go “I must have one of these”, and this is that gun for me.  I’ve never owned a Kel-Tec, but it looks like there’s a first time for everything.

Terrorist vs. armed citizen

In today’s sports desk roundup, we found an interesting match several months ago from Israel, where a terrorist in a bulldozer attempted to crush/murder a bunch of civilians, and was shot 4 times by an Israeli taxi cab driver.  No one but the terrorist was killed.

The highlight reel!

  • Terrorist gets bulldozer/weapon
  • attacks cops and civilians
  • Armed civilian shoots him four times, critically wounding him
  • After armed citizen gets the party started, cops finish him off with M16s.
  • No good guys get killed.
  • Bad guy gets killed.

And that, my friends, is how you deal with scumbag terrorists.

I should try that

Sebastian has a fun little troll, who is trying to claim that CCW permit holders are responsible for 200 murders each year.  You know how he’s doing this?  By making up numbers.  It’s really quite cool, actually – just like MikeB’s magical “10%” of gunowners claim, it’s based on a total lack of understanding about how statistics actually work.

Of course, I’ve noticed that this is awfully common among anti-gun advocates.  If the facts don’t fit your narrative, that’s no problem, just make up new stuff and portray it as fact!  The problem being is that it actually works some of the time, specifically because it targets the general lack of knowledge of firearms, concealed carry, and gun rights issues that most folk are burdened with.  So when a guy like Mark says “I’m a reporter and here’s my research”, it’s really nothing other than him trying to leverage his perceived authority as a “reporter” to lend credence to an argument built on lies.

Which goes to one of my favorite drums to bang, namely that of “education”.  We win arguments like this not by engaging with people like Mark, but rather by educating the people he’s trying to persuade with his made up numbers.

Remington getting into 1911 market

Along with Ruger, it would seem that Remington is eying the handgun market with a 1911.

A 1911 is in first-production testing, and may be ready for introduction at SHOT Show in January. That is a qualified date because the company seems more concerned in making a solid product before introducing it to the consumer public, eschewing other companies’ practice of launching products and making adjustments on the fly.

And now a word from our sponsors

Look ma, more advertising!  In all seriousness though, we’re committed to only offering the best of the shooting sports community, which is why now we’re partnered with two of the best out there, Cheaper than Dirt (on the right) and now part of the Brownells.com affiliate program.  I’ve had a lot of dealings with both companies, and can recommend them without reservation.  Full disclosure as well: I get paid when you buy stuff at Brownells, so uh, buy stuff.
