New gun weekend and Sumdood report

I’m going to say that I bought a new gun to celebrate Veteran’s Day; but that’s not quite how it shook down.  I was in Gander Mountain for Christmas related reasons, when my perusal of “clearance shotguns” section cast my eye upon the very H&R Survivor .410/.45 Colt combo shotgun I had been chasing after the last time I went to a gun show.

So, because the Budget Committee is a wonderful and graceful woman, I was able to acquire said shotgun rifle.  I’ll be rolling out to the range in the next couple of weeks to try it out.  Like the webpage says, it has a hollow buttstock that allows you put survival gear in there.  A ziploc baggie full of matches and some tinder would be a nice fit.  Or, I could do like Mrs. Ahab said and “fill it full of beef jerky”.

In other interesting events from the weekend, I witnessed an attempted straw purchase.  Now, the actual definition of a straw purchase is when someone who is legally allowed to purchase a firearm is purchasing a firearm for someone who is legally barred from gun ownership.

Of course, I almost died laughing when I overheard the whole transaction.  It went something like this:

Gander Mtn Employee: “Sir, you’ve checked the box that indicates you are not the actual purchaser of this firearm.  Because of this, we cannot legally sell you a gun.”

Straw man: “So, you can’t sell me this gun because I’m buyin’ it for someone else?”

GM Employee: “That’s correct.  Who exactly were you buying this gun for?”

Straw Man: “Uh…just sumdood.”

On a humorous note, the firearm he was trying to buy was a POS used PPk clone, in glorious chrome.

Pretty good weekend for me.  If I can cap it off with a 49ers win tonight, it will be perfect.

The doctrine cannot be wrong

The sort of cognitive dissonance demonstrated by the English government in this article is simply shocking.  The gist of it is that the Brits want to push the kind of restrictive gun control they have in their country onto the rest of the EU, and use the tragedy in Finland as a launching platform for their agenda.

A British MEP is hoping to “fast track” a new EU deal on gun control and says last week’s school massacre in Finland should act as a wake up call.

The problem of course is that the gun control measures in England have done precisely nothing to actually combat crime, and the argument could be made that things have gotten worse.

Ms McCarthy, who represents the North West Region, said: “In the wake of the Dunblane tragedy the UK toughened its gun law and we banned all handguns.

Not to pick squares Ms. McCarthy, but how exactly is that working out for you?  Luckily for me, the article itself answered this question for me in the last section.

She has been working closely with Greater Manchester Police, who highlighted the problem to her after busting two separate gangs who were importing imitation guns from Lithuania and Germany.

One gang converted them before bringing them into the country while the other imported them and then paid a corrupt engineer to carry out the conversion work in Manchester.

The police eventually caught the gang – who were jailed for up to 19 years in November last year – but many of the guns remain in circulation.

So…what you’re saying is that despite the fact that smuggling replicas into England is already illegal, and converting a replica firearm to a functional firearm is also illegal, you’ve decided that the best solution is to pass even more laws.  To steal an Uncleism, you’re basically saying “Let’s make it illegaler”.

This would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.  The British government needs to wake up and realize that their gun control laws have been a miserable failure – spreading the failure to the rest of the EU isn’t going to help.

Gun Auction update

Update to this post, it looks like we would have had to get about $30,000 together to afford Pancho’s old guns.

Selling for $18,000 was the prize of the auction — Villa’s Remington single action revolver that is engraved with his real name, “Doreteo Arango,” on one side of the barrel.

That’s pretty cool.  Congratulations to whomever won those at auction – it’s a fine collector’s piece and deserves to be preserved.

Happy Birthday, Devil Dogs

Your beloved Corps is 232 years young.

Now, us Coasties like to pick squares with a lot of the branches of service: the Chair Force stole our uniforms, the Navy and Air Force are scared of a little weather; but rarely will I go around insulting the Marines.  One of your former commandants explained it better than I can:

Gen. Krulak on the Coast Guard: The Coast Guard and the Marines share something in common. When you need them, and you see them – you know everything is going to be all right.

Semper Fi, Leathernecks.  Here’s to another 232 years of kicking ass!

Hey Paul

Just a heads up here, but Jim Zumbo apologized, recanted, and has been shooting Evil Black Rifles with Ted Nugent.  He doesn’t annoy the NRA, he’s practically a poster child for the forgiveness that we’re willing to extend to people who apologize for saying dumb things.

But I guess asking the staffers who write your blog to actually fact check things would be too much, wouldn’t it?

Get some money together

I want to buy the two guns owned by Pancho Villa.    I think it’s cool that these historical firearms are being auctioned off – I am hoping actually that the Calamity Jane pistol gets picked up by the NRA, or is somehow donated to their museum.  It’s a neat little piece of history, and deserves to be preserved.

The guns from Villa are really interesting to me; I’ve always been fascinated by that period of history.  Despite the fact that he was a murderous, socialist bastard, the character of Pancho Villa himself is one I’ve always been interested in as well.

So, if anyone wants to float me a couple grand…

It’s baaaaaaaaaaack

My 10/22 PDW project is back on track, after months of hiatus because my gun ADD was forcing me to buy .45 ACP revolvers left and right (Note: this is not a bad thing).

So…I still haven’t decided if I’m going to make it a .17 HM2, or a special build for the 60 grain Aguila SniperSubSonic rounds.  If I do the Aguila build, I can get a barrel that’s threaded for a suppressor, giving the rifle even more of a Tommy Tacticool look.

Decisions, decisions.  So, .17 HM2 or Aguila SniperSubSonic?

Here we go

The Court is deciding whether or not take Parker today.  They’ll announce their decision on Tuesday.

I have not talked that much about the Parker case, mostly because it has been well covered by other blogs, and as such I don’t feel like I have much to offer in terms of coverage.

Parker makes me nervous.  I mean really, really nervous.   I want to win, and badly.  But I really do get nervous about it – Bush has not been a friend to us, and I really have no idea how his appointees will roll on this issue.

My survival guns

I have been thinking about which two guns I would take with me if I ever had to “go into the woods”. For me, the choice is pretty clear: a .22 rifle and a .357 Magnum revolver with a four inch barrel.

Since I don’t have one yet, I can’t take an AR-7, but my Ruger 10/22 would work just fine.

For handguns, my 7 round Taurus Tracker would be my choice. The 357 round is powerful enough for most stuff, and if you have to scrounge for ammo, almost every gun shop, wal-mart, etc carries .38 or .357 rounds.

The .22 rifle is generally my choice for a bug out rifle – I’m a crack shot with it, ammo is light and plentiful. The Ruger itself is rugged, durable, and digests every .22LR round I can find.

That’s what I’d pack. www.saysuncle.com says he’d take a 9mm AR and his Glock, what would you take?
