Inflation sucks

Two years ago, this Pietta ’58 Remington clone on Cabelas was $169.  Now it’s gone up $30 bucks, which while not significant, is rather annoying.  Especially since I want to do another conversion revolver, and the R&D Conversion Cylinders are about $200 a pop as well.

Well, if anyone who buys me Christmas presents is reading this…you get the idea.  Gift certificates to Cabelas and MidwayUSA are always appreciated.  Just sayin’, is all.

Happy Thanksgiving

In the finest spirit of the holiday, I am going to put up the usual blog post of “things for which I am thankful”; because it is Thanksgiving after all.  I’ll keep it to five items, because otherwise this could get a little tedious.

  1. I am thankful for liberty.  Admittedly, it galls me when I see our personal freedoms eroded by our elected officials; but they have not been wiped out.  I am still free to write this blog with no fear of repercussions or reprisals from my own government, I am free to keep and bear arms, and I am still (mostly) secure from warrant less searches and seizures.  But that’s not the only thing about liberty for which I am thankful, because it’s presence alone does not deter those who would seek to erode it.  I am thankful that there are millions of like minded Americans who believe that personal, individual liberty is the only to preserve our great nation.
  2. I am thankful for the members of our Armed Forces, all five branches.  From the 19 year old Devil Dog who just wants to kick some ass, to the Air Force tanker pilot doing aerial refueling operations, the salty Navy Senior Chief, the Army grunts doing the dirty work, and finally to the Coast Guard rescue swimmer.    And while I’m thankful for all those people, I’m also thankful for the military personnel that you never see on TV: the Air Force officer who makes sure that the fuel gets delivered, the Navy cooks, the Coast Guard helicopter mechanics.  The behind the scenes guys who, if they didn’t do their jobs, nothing would work.  I’m thankful that young men and women still believe that serving in the military is an honorable and decent career path.
  3. I’m thankful for family.  I’m thankful that every year, something my dad said when I was younger makes a little more sense.  I’m thankful that both my parents are married, and they provided me with a stellar example of how a loving marriage should run.  I’m thankful that my wife puts up with my shenanigans, and that as we close in on two years of marriage I do actually love her more now than I did the day we got married.
  4. I’m thankful for books.  When I was a kid, I used to read a lot.  For a while, I had just sort of dropped the habit, and didn’t indulge in books as much as I once had.  Recently, I’ve started reading again, and while Mrs. Ahab says that my books of choice are boring, I’m thankful to just be reading again.
  5. Finally, I’m thankful for my readers.  I had the stunning realization that other people actually read this blog, and that it has an impact on other people.  Thank you for coming back and reading my ramblings day after day, and I hope you continue to come back.  Bring friends too.

There is a lot to be thankful.  While I spend a lot of my time on this blog looking at the things that are going wrong, and the ugliness in the world, I really should spend more time talking about things that make me smile, or things that bring joy to myself and others.

Happy Thanksgiving

It’s easier to murder people

If they can’t fight back.

Police in Sudan have threatened to use force to seize arms from displaced Darfuris in one of the region’s most volatile camps, according to a police notice seen by Reuters on Wednesday.

The document gave Kalma residents three days from Wednesday to hand in weapons kept inside the camp.

The notice said police would “seize all unsubmitted weapons by force after the expiration of the date given,” leaving the exact deadline ambiguous.

Of course, it’s being done “for the safety” of the occupants of the camp; which of course begs the question of who exactly is going to protect the refugees from their alleged “protectors”?

Darfur as a region is in deep, and yet I somehow doubt that the forces that are causing the violence and destabilization in this particular camp are going to be somehow dissuaded because the Sudanese government has disarmed everyone else.  All that you will have is a bunch of unarmed victims waiting around to be killed by their own government, or other radical factions.

I hope he rots there

Warren Jeffs sentenced to 10 years in the federal slammer.

Jeffs, 51, was convicted of rape as an accomplice for his role in the marriage of a 14-year-old follower and her 19-year-old cousin in 2001. The two felony counts each carried a punishment of five years to life.

It’s too bad it’s not more.  Warren Jeffs is a scumbag of the first order – someone who manipulates people’s (admittedly misguided) religious beliefs for his own person and sexual gain.

Rudy on Parker/Heller

“I strongly believe that Judge Silberman’s decision deserves to be upheld by the Supreme Court. The Parker decision is an excellent example of a judge looking to find the meaning of the words in the Constitution, not what he would like them to mean,” Giuliani said.

You know, if he keeps this up, I might actually change my mind about voting for him.  I’m still voting for Fred in the primary, but if Rudy ends up as the candidate, comments like this might be able to sway me from voting libertarian.

I still get concerned though – it’s difficult for me to trust Rudy when I look at his past track record.

Cool, but weird

Brits find fossil of man sized scorpion.

British scientists have stumbled across a fossilized claw, part of an ancient sea scorpion, that is of such large proportion it would make the entire creature the biggest bug ever.

How big? Bigger than you, and at 8 feet long as big as some Smart cars.

Now, we had some bigass scorpions in the Mojave Desert, but nothing 8 feet long.  It’s like something you’d expect to see in a Conan movie.  And yes, an 8 foot scorpion is just as badass as you think it is.

Braddy said the sea scorpions also were cannibals that fought and ate one other, so it helped to be as big as they could be. .

Awesome.

Never Surrender

A teenager from DeKalb County gets a Bravo Zulu for her courage – she stabbed a would be kidnapper with a pencil, which allowed her to make an escape.

The 14-year-old was on her way home from dance practice when a black van pulled up, and the men tried to grab her, Police said, dding that the girl got away when she stabbed one of the men in the arm with a pencil. The girl was not seriously hurt, police said.

The young lady remains unnamed by the press, but she deserves congratulations and praise.  She also stands out as a perfect example of why I advocate resistance in the face of violence.  You should never, ever let yourself be taken anywhere against your will; in those situations the odds for survival are really not in your favor.

Skywritings

The well written and enjoyable Skywritings seems to be down for good – the author left the following comment on one of my posts:

Just to let you know. . I’ve quit the blog. . going to start on the book and the two aren’t compatable.

I will miss her blog.  It was a welcome change of pace from all the political/depressing stuff I read.  She reminded me of all the things I love about aviation.

Let me know when the book comes out, and I’ll buy the first copy.
