Hotel California

It has been a pretty interesting trip for me out to the California coast; I (obviously) did all the touristy stuff, as well as introducing my wife to a lot of places that I have very fond memories of, having visted here a lot as I was growing up.

It’s also been kind of a bittersweet week for me, because while I’m reminded of the incredible beauty and grandeur of my former home state, I’m also depressed to know that unless there’s a tremendous change in the political climate out here that I’ll never be able to move back. That’s the thing for me, I can’t bring myself to live in a state like California, to support that state with my tax dollars – especially since I live in a free state.

On the bright side, I did have a positive encounter with California’s gun culture. The Harbor Gun Shop in Morro Bay is still there, still in the same place I remembered it was as a child, and still loaded with old bolt action rifles and bayonets, some great pistols, and all the rest of the goodies. I also drove by the Hogue range again, this time during a match – I could hear the faint “pop-pop-pop” of pistol fire, and it brought a smile to my face. California gun culture isn’t dead yet, despite the best efforts of the California politicians.

The real question is whether or not California can be saved – remember that this state is viewed as a model for gun controllers, and that it’s received an A rating from the Brady Campaign almost every year. Even with that, I think that Cali could turn around; a pro-individual rights ruling in Heller could help the few pro-gun activists in California get the ball rolling in the right direction. The other thing we can do is support companies who refuse to sell to Cali, like STI.

Maybe it will help, maybe it wouldn’t. I know though that it would bring me a lot of joy to see my home state turn the corner and state to make a comeback – maybe then I could actually seriously consider moving back.

Blogging ain’t easy

On vacation in Central Cali, and I have to tell you, it’s weird not having a reliable internet connection. Having spent most of my life with semi decent web access, and all of my adult life hooked up to the intertrons; I’m both enjoying and hating the spotty connectivity.

That being said, it’s absolutely gorgeous here – the central Coast is my favorite part of California, and while the weather is kind of chilly for my wife, I’m loving it.

New Jersey Gun bill bans muzzleloaders

I only wish that I were making this up.

At that link above, Sebastian has a full list of the guns that would be banned by the anti-gun bill that just passed out of committee in the New Jersey Assembly: the Brown Bess musket and replicas are on that list.  But remember, Bryan Miller and New Jersey Ceasefire don’t want to target hunters and collectors, no, they want to go after eeeeeevvvviiiiillllll assault rifles like the Thompson Center Muzzleloaders.

If you’re in New Jersey, please contact your state Reps and tell them that you oppose this bill.  It’s easily one of the most sweeping and poorly thought out gun bans I’ve seen since the Louisiana Assault Weapons ban.

Brady Campaign says: We’re losing

Bad week for Paul & Co, first they get pummelled by the ATF for lying about trace data, and then Paul Helmke is quoted on ABC News saying that they’re losing the fight:

“We’ve lost the battle on what the Second Amendment means,” campaign president Paul Helmke told ABC News. “Seventy-five percent of the public thinks it’s an individual right. Why are we arguing a theory anymore?

No, you’re not dreaming.  Paul Helmke just agreed in principle that the 2nd Amendment protects an individual right to bear arms.  When I first saw this story yesterday, I seriously had no idea how to react – I sat slack-jawed at my computer staring at the monitor thinking “Holy crap”.  Thankfully, the Brady Bunch returned to their normal form so I wasn’t too worried:

“Universal background checks don’t affect the right of self-defense in the home. Banning a super dangerous class of weapons, like assault weapons, also would not adversely affect the right of self-defense in the home,” said Henigan. “

Whew, for a minute there I thought I was in the twilight zone, and that Rod Serling was about to show up.

In all seriousness though, this is actually a huge strategic win for the pro-gun movement, because we’ve fundamentally changed the tenor of the debate; when the spokesperson for the Brady Campaign is talking about how their infrigements don’t impede self-defense, and the word “hunting” is never mentioned we’ve taken a big step in the right direction.

I’m not saying slack off because we’re winning – if anything we need to push harder.  If anyone has ever played a tackle sport like rugby or football, they’ve encountered that moment where you’re trying to break a tackle and you can feel your opponent’s grip slacken just a bit, and at that moment you push harder to finish him off.  While a crude analogy, it’s also fitting – the weaker and more irrelevant the  Brady Campaign becomes, the harder we have to push.  It starts with an individual rights ruling from the Supreme Court, and from there it continues to making sure that the ruling isn’t twisted into justification for more gun laws.

One last excerpt from the article:

Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence fully expects to lose.

Hell yeah.

Cybernauts, ho!

You know, sometimes I wish I were making this stuff up.

A crack team of cybernauts will form a rapid response internet “war room” to track and respond aggressively to online rumours that Barack Obama is unpatriotic and a Muslim.

H/t to Tamarama, who has decided to aggressively bait the cybernauts (oh my god I can’t say that without laughing) by posting hilarious and completely false things about Obama.

Now, as funny as this is, it also demonstrates a few key points: 1) There are no real grassroots for the other team, 2) the other team recognizes the power behind new media, and 3) lol cybernauts.

Taking each of those in order, the 1st one is pretty self-explanatory.  You see countless, countless instances of anti-gun groups having to literally pay people to be their voice on the internet, which causes them to often falsely assume that we’re all paid shills as well.  Now, there are legitimate left-wing bloggers who aren’t paid shills for the Democrats, but at the same time, the fact that Obama is forming and internets task-force of cybernauts (ahahahahahahaha) speaks volumes.

The fact that the Obama campaign recognizes the power of New Media is nothing new to us though – even his pet anti-gun group AHSA rolls around the web trolling pro-gun blogs and calling people names.  Actions like this demonstrate that the internet is the voice to compete with, stuff said on the internet almost never goes away and can be incredibly pervasive.

Finally, point number 3.  Hahahahahahahahahahaha “cybernauts”.

Bowling pins and Blackwater

Too bad I’m going on vacation tomorrow and won’t be able to post more of these, because I’m having a lot of fun.

Click this link to vote for Call me Ahab to go to Blackwater in North Carolina to train with Todd Jarret – I’ll fight zombies, Cylons, bowling pins, you name it!

By voting, you can also enter yourself to win the 11th slot that’s open – your chance to shoot with Todd, 10 other bloggers and some awesome guns from ParaUSA.

Stupid lucky kids

These idiot teenagers are extremely lucky that none of them got killed.

Sheriff Dan Watts said the man heard noise in his backyard and went outside with a flash light and a gun. Several Ely teenagers who had been trespassing on the man’s property got into a vehicle and one of them shot him in the eye with a paintball gun as the car drove away. Watts said the man thought he had been shot with a real gun and returned fire striking the car but not injuring any of the occupants.

The man who was shot with the paintball has a detached retina and it was not known Monday afternoon if he would lose sight in one eye, according to Watts.

So, these stupid kids decide that it would be awesome lulz if they went around shooting people up with a paintball gun, and then they shoot a cop in the eye who rightfully fearing for his life, returned fire.  He did not hit any of the kids because he had been shot in the eye with a .69 caliber paintball and could lose sight in one of his eyes.

Personally, I hope they do file charges against these idiots.  Felony charges, give ’em the book for assaulting a police officer – and yes, before you complain that I’m only saying this because it was a cop, I’d be just as pissed if it was anyone else that could be permanently maimed because of stupid teenagers.

The other lesson incumbent in this is don’t shoot people with toy guns.  Having been shot with paintballs before, I can vouch that it’s an unpleasant experience if you’re not wearing protective gear – I can honestly say that in similar circumstances I would have likely shot back as well.
