I feel a little weird

I didn’t shoot at all this weekend, marking the first weekend I’ve taken off from shooting since I found out I’d be going to the ParaUSA summer camp.  Honestly, I was sitting at my desk this morning thinking about “what to blog” and was looking around for match photos when I realized I hadn’t shot at all, which is why I didn’t have any match photos.

Luckily, Tracy did shoot some IDPA this weekend, so if you’re hankering for a little fix of IDPA, you can check out her blog.

As a part of that, I’ve sort of remembered just how addicting this “competitive shooting” stuff is; I was itching to pick up a gun this weekend, even though I really enjoyed not having to haul myself out of bed at the asscrack on dawn on a Saturday, I kind of sat around the house going “ho-hum, wish I was shooting instead of watching equestrian olympics”.

Plus, I’m already thinking about what guns I’m going to buy if I don’t end up liking the Para enough to buy it – I really want another DA/SA 9mm for USPSA Production/IDPA SSP division, plus I want to get a non-ported barrel for my .40 S&W Glock so I can shoot that in Limited instead of Open.

Why are anti-gunners so violent?

Seriously, I don’t get this – the amount of hatred and vitriol that you constantly see from the mainstream media directed towards the pro-gun lobby is often downright frightening.  Here is yet another example of left-wing columnist’s violent revenge fantasy:

So enjoy yourselves, gun-persons. Your end is coming. And when the black helicopters land on your lawn and AFT agents shoot you for resisting arrest, I’ll be proud to show up and pry your weapon from your cold, dead hand.

Laughing maniacally as I do it. So there.

That was his response to receiving an email where he was called an “anti-gun bigot”.  Just so we’re clear – he gets called a bigot, and then says he’ll laugh over the dead bodies of gun owners shot by the ATF.  “They called me a name, they can’t do that!  I’m the mainstream media!  I hope the ATF kills them all!”

Way to keep it classy there, Don Kaul.

ParaUSA Summer Camp Show

Tomorrow night on Gun Nuts: The Next Generation we are going to be having our first of at least two and possibly three all Blackwater/ParaUSA shows.

First up, tomorrow night at 11pm we’ve got Robb Allen and Joe Huffman making live call-in appearances to talk about what they’re expecting w/regards to the training. Robb is mostly a Glock guy, so I’m looking forward to seeing him bring the gun up, get his sight picture, squeeze the trigger and have nothing happen because he forgot to take the safety off. Joe is a long time competitive shooter, and is my sworn enemy (I’m kidding) as he and I will hopefully be shooting an El Presidente at the end of the course to determine who wins our bet, the states of which have not yet been settled.

If you’d like to call in and reach us, the listener call in number is (347) 539-5436 – or you can join the conversation in the online chat at www.blogtalkradio.com/gunnuts. One of our topics of conversation is going to be the stakes of the bet – I think it would be hilarious if you, our listeners would suggest the stakes for my bet with Joe Huffman.

Remember, it’s 11pm Eastern time, at www.blogtalkradio.com/gunnuts – it is where all the cool kids will be.

Steel Challenge in the news

The local ABC affiliate in Ventura County (I love Ventura) has some pretty positive coverage of the Steel Challenge championship!

Alicia Setting and Molly Smith are both 11 years old and are among the world’s best pistol shooters. They are two girls who say they enjoy guns over dolls.

Alicia can fire a pistol at five targets, hitting the bull’s-eye on each of them in a blistering four seconds. Molly is just as fast. They are both competing in the preteen division in the Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championship.

Not only is it good coverage, but they manage to portray young girls shooting as a positive thing.  I’m actually a little surprised that this came from an MSM outlet – normally this sort of coverage would be full of PSH about children and guns.  ABC 7 from Ventura gets a “bravo zulu” for this.

Now, to talk a bit about Steel Challenge World Championships – if you haven’t seen one of these before, you really should.  I’m sure that Shooting USA or Shooting Gallery will have an episode about this match, but it really is the fastest shooting sport ever.  They run a set of predefined stages, and man do this men and women run those guns fast.

The best part about Steel Challenge is how “all inclusive” it is – even though it was recently purchased by USPSA, Steel Challenge matches included competitive categories for everyone from IDPA shooters, rimfire shooters, and even Cowboy Action Shooters.  That’s right, you can go to the Steel Challenge World Championships to see if you’re literally “the fastest gun in the west”.

Awesome.

School Carry

Awesome.

When classes start Aug. 25 at the tiny Harrold school district, there will be one distinct difference from years prior — some of the teachers may have guns.

To deter and protect against school shootings, trustees have altered district policy to allow employees to carry concealed weapons if they have permits. The 110-student district lies 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth on the eastern end of Wilbarger County, near the Oklahoma border…

I have always supported school carry when it was done by responsible adults with concealed carry permits; so I think that the decision is a good one.  I’m glad to see that school administrators are expanding the right to carry to their teachers and staff.

Free Shotgun Porn

So I have a new (to me) shotgun. My father in law had a couple of shotguns that he never used that were gathering dust in his attic out on the farm, and figured that I could give them a good home and some good use. One is a single shot break action of indeterminate origin; and the other one, the one I’m most excited about is the Remington 870 in great condition with a really long barrel.

You can click the picture for the fullsize black & white version – which actually looks better in the low light than the color version.  Apparently my stupid cat Malcolm wanted to be in the picture, so he decided that it was going to be all about him.

The 870 has what is probably a 28 inch barrel (really, it’s huge) and a 2 3/4 inch chamber, so no 3 inch magnum loads for me.  I’m actually fine with that latter fact, as I find shooting more than uh, one or two shots with the 3 inch rounds to be manifestly unpleasant after a while.  The thing that really makes me happy about this gun is that now, without spending any money, I have my goose gun.

As previously discussed, the Frankenshotty, being a non-magnum 20 gauge, wasn’t enough gun to “reach out and touch them” when it comes to knocking Canada geese out of the sky, but the 12 gauge, even with 2 3/4 shells is definitely enough gun to bring them down.  I can now finally begin to wage my war on the pooping menace.

“Only Ones” shooting suspects

You know, after all this stuff about Only Ones, I was really committed to defending cops and other law enforcement officers.  I had obviously had my disagreements with other people about the nature of law enforcement, but was prepared to believe that a few bad apples didn’t spoil the barrel.

Until I saw the video that was emailed to me.  I don’t know how this video got out, and why there isn’t a media firestorm over this.  In the video, these….stormtroopers, for lack of a better word, shoot a fleeing suspect, cover up a murder/suicide, and generally spit in the face of everything that law enforcement and the police are supposed to stand for.

This is exactly the kind of behavior from the police that could spark a rebellion – where an alliance between citizens who will no longer stand for the depredations of their imperialist oppressors.

I have to warn you, the footage is graphic, which is why I’ve put it below the cut.

Shall Not Be Infringed

From Uncle, regarding the backlash against his (and sometimes my) use of “shall not be infringed” as a pejorative.

We all are shall not be infringed types. Some of us realize that there will be infringements and there are infringements. It’s just that we choose to work within the existing system to address those infringements. Where the SNBI, in my opinion, is misguided is that there only responses is some variation of what part of shall not be infringed don’t you understand? While the purists and gun nuts (of which I’m one) like that talk, it’s not real conducive to changing hearts and minds to tell people that if they don’t like, you’re going to shoot them. Just sayin’.

It shouldn’t really be a surprise to any of my long time readers that I agree with him; I still have to be convinced that our system is broken beyond repair, and as such I still advocate a more moderate approach.

But he’s right when he says that we’re all “shall not be infringed” types – he and I both advocate for things like nationwide carry, less regulation on NFA items, etc; we just still are playing inside the system right now.
