On Fudds

Yes, we do certainly need to hang together.  Like the man says, just because they’re not calling your .243 Winchester hunting rifle a “long range sniper rifle” yet doesn’t mean that they won’t.

On the topic of the term “Fudd” itself, I’m generally opposed to its use.  I think and believe that hunters are a tremendously important demographic for us to have on our side, and further dividing our own ranks in front of a newly energized anti-gun lobby probably isn’t in our best interests.  And yes, I’ve used it, and used it disparagingly, which is something that I regret doing.

Gun Nuts Radio: The EBR Show

If you missed out on last night’s show, don’t worry – you can still listen to an archived copy by clicking this link.  It was a pretty great show, actually – we spent a lot of time talking about the run on firearms, a even more time talking about what black rifle you should buy if you’re in the market.  As usual, all the cool kids were in the chat room live at 9pm, so if you’re not listening live – you’re missing out.  Also, here is an .mp3 copy of the show, and of course the embedded player is beneath this text.

We don’t have a topic for next week’s show, so Breda and I are taking suggestions. An unscientific poll was taken to see how many people would like to hear Mrs. Ahab on the show, and the response was a unanimous “yes”; and who am I to resist the mandate of the people? I’ll do what I can in upcoming weeks to get her on the air with me. Also, I’m going to try to update the Call me Ahab iTunes podcast so that if you’ve subscribed to me/us in iTunes you’ll be able to get your content that way.

Idiots

Guns and alcohol don’t mix, you stupid bastard.  Aside from the fact that shooting his own child is a pretty harsh punishment, I hope this guy rots in jail for the rest of life.  We don’t want or need gun owners who willing ignore common damn sense and the 4 rules of gun safety because “they’ve been drinking double shots of vodka”.

I don’t think anyone will disagree with me when I say that this guy deserves to have to the full weight of the law brought down on him.  To my mind, there is no difference between driving drunk and trying to clean/operate firearms while drunk.  You just don’t do it.

I don’t think that word means what you think it means

Paul Helmke thinks that they “won” after the election.  Oh Paul, you sad, sad panda.  You didn’t win the election.  Barack Obama ran so far away from the gun control issue that they created a fake pro-gun group for him so that he could pretend to be pro-gun and have exactly nothing to do with you and your buddies.  I mean, honestly, how many radio commercials did you air with Obama in them?  Zero?  Meanwhile, the fake pro-gun group AHSA had a commerical with Obama in it, saying he’d defend our right to keep and bear arms.

It must hurt to be jilted like that.  Especially when on a national and statewide scale, NRA endorsed candidates had a much, much higher victory rate than Brady Campaign endorsed candidates, and NRA endorsed about 5 or 6 times as many candidates as the Brady Campaign.  It’s okay, Paul.  We understand you’ve got an agenda to push, and that you’re feeling marginalized as the country runs away from gun control, but it’s starting to get sad.

Buy some stuff

Today is National Ammo Day, so swing by your local gun shop/hardware store/internet retailer and pick up a box of .22 at least, or more if you.  I’m ordering a small raft full of .40 S&W from my boys at Georgia Arms, because when the zombies come I’ll need all the FMJ I can get.

Also, with regards to the recent buying trend in rifles and magazines,  Michael Bane says “keep buying stuff“.  He offers the excellent suggestion to stock up on magazines, which is a pretty good idea.  I’m buying a few 18 round magazines for the Para P16-40 Limited in addition to the ammo that I’ll be picking up.  Luckily for me, those mags aren’t in high demand like Glock or AR magazines, so I haven’t seen a huge jump in prices.

Eric Holder to be Attorney General

Sebastian points out that Eric Holder has been tapped by Obama to head up the Department of Justice.  As mentioned, the Attorney General is the cabinet level position that has the most direct impact on gun owners by virtue of directing the path and enforcement actions of the BATFE as part of the Department of Justice.

Looking at his career, Mr. Holder was appointed by Reagan as a judge on the DC Superior Court, then appointed to US Attorney by Clinton, and then once again nominated by Clinton for Deputy Attorney General, a position to which he was unanimously confirmed.  During his political career, he’s been…well, a politician, and as far as I can tell, a pretty smart one at that.  The only major political decision he’s made with which I vehemently disagree is that he supported keeping the DC Handgun Ban in an amicus brief filed with the Supreme Court during the Heller decision.

All that being said, we’ll wait and see how it shakes out.  I do agree with Sebastian as long as while he’s on watch the DOJ doesn’t burn down any buildings full of kids or point submachine guns at 6 year old immigrants, than he’ll be doing a lot better than the last Democrat appointed to that position.

Side note: Mr. Obama’s first two cabinet appointments have gone to close friends.  I thought that we were going to be about bipartisanship and an end to cronyism?

US Cleans up at World Action Pistol Championship

Who says the US doesn’t have the best shooters in the world?  Certainly not the competitors at the World Action Pistol Championships in New Zealand, who were treated to a tour de force of United States shooting prowess.  The World Action Pistol Championships are essentially the World Championship version of the Bianchi Cup, a pistol match dominated by two familiar names: Bruce Piatt and Doug Koenig; and those two greats did not dissapoint, Bruce winning the Open Championship, and Doug winning the Iron Man championship (Iron Man is an aggregate of your score in Open and Metallic Sights – many shooters don’t compete in it because it is quite grueling).  Here is a breakdown of the US Finishes:

  • Individual Open: Doug Koenig, 1920-181x
  • Individual Metallic: Vance Schmid, 1902-133x
  • Iron Man: Bruce Piatt, 3811-321x
  • Team Open: 1st Place (Team A) and 2nd Place (Team B)
  • Team Metallic: 1st Place (Team A) and 2nd Place (Team B)

Congratulations to Doug Koenig, who adds a World Championship to his stack of Bianchi Cup trophies, and of course to all the other members of Team USA for their fine performance in the 6th World Action Pistol Championships.  In 4 years, I hope we can clean up the trophies again.
