New Hamilton County Shooting Range

Wyatt’s Sporting Goods has re-opened its doors in Cicero, just north of Noblesville.  This is good news for Hamilton County shooters, because in March, Wyatt’s is planning on opening Hamilton County’s first indoor shooting range.  Did I mention that the new range that’s going to open is going to be the absolute state of the art in indoor range technology?

The 25-yard, seven-lane, wheelchair-accessible range will be unlike any other, said Wyatt. “It’s designed for safety, then fun,” and he’s taken what he thinks are the best ideas from ranges around the world, he said.

“There is nothing like it in the state of Indiana,” said Jeff Kruse, 52, Arcadia, owner of Ballistic Technologies. He designed the temperature-controlled self-contained range with a bulletproof perimeter, private shooting stalls and a closed-loop ventilation system with air scrubbers.

It will be very nice to have a place to go shoot in the winter that is 1) in my area, and 2) capable of supporting shots longer than 45 feet.  There’s nothing nicer than being able to roll out a B27 target to 25 yards just to see how good a shot you actually are.

I’m looking forward to March – you can be that when the new range opens I’ll be one of the first customers!

Too Cold to Shoot Outside

Honestly, this weekend I was going into “bullet withdrawal”.  Over the past few weeks I’d skipped Friday Night Steel to go to a party, had my regular IDPA match canceled, had a Steel Challenge match canceled (protip: shooting outside in the winter in Indiana can be dangerous), and generally have not been shooting as much as I’d normally like.  It’s always tough to get quality range time in the winter, so yesterday I rolled out to Popguns and their indoor range to play with some .40 S&W Minor loads that I have.  The loads worked great, as a side note, and I’ll actually have a full review of them on Tuesday (and talk about them for the Gun Nuts Christmas Special).

I am glad to see that I apparently remembered how to shoot, after taking almost a month off from the shooting sports (through no fault of my own, mind you).  Also, after bringing that target back, and looking over my other targets for the day, I realized that I could probably stand to adjust my sights so the bullet hits about an inch to the right.

One of the things that I always find interesting about going to indoor ranges is watching other people shoot.  Tam had a similar experience this weekend, when someone didn’t understand that her range buddy was deliberately making his gun malfunction to practice failure drills.  I’m there to practice – I may not be able to practice shooting multiple targets, or going from the holster, but I can certainly practice shooting hammers, controlled pairs, rapid reloads, and malf drills.

This weekend, I saw a real cross section of people.  There was a woman there shooting rental guns because she’s considering her first CCW purchase, a father taking his young son shooting, an group of guys my age with a lot of enthusiasm and not a lot of accuracy – and by the time I left around noon, the gun store was packed, three deep at the counter.

The point of getting to the range, despite having fun and shooting some bullets, is to practice.  Practice reloads, hammers, whatever – but if you’re going to carry a gun on a daily basis, it doesn’t do you a whole lot of good if you never shoot it.

Christmas Specials

As I sit drinking my coffee on a cold Indiana Saturday, I’m reminded of my favorite Christmas special of all time.  No, it’s not Rudolph, it’s not Charlie Brown, it’s none of those.  It’s an extremely little know special called “A Wish for Wings that Work”; by Berkeley Breathed.  Starring Opus, Bill the Cat, and other characters from his “Outland/Bloom County/Opus” series of comics, A Wish for Wings that Work has always been something of a family tradition in the Ahab household – and now I’m sharing that tradition with you.  Thank the internets for this!

IDPA Match at Gunny’s

SayUncle linked to this a while back, it’s information on an IDPA-style match that’s going to be held at Gunny’s Indoor Range in Maryville, TN.  I just registered for the match yesterday, so I’ll be down in TN come January 31st to go blast some targets into oblivion.  Hopefully, I’ll manage to not shoot any hostages, although I have some kind of magnetic attraction to blasting them.  Plus, there are prizes.

Lewis Scoring System: Prizes will be awarded to 1st and 2nd place in Gold, Silver, and Bronze Divisions (assuming a full field). Remaining prizes to be awarded based on order of finish. Awards presentation will take place within 45 minutes after the last shot is taken. Presuming there are 60 shooters, there will be a $3500 prize table with EVERYBODY going to the table at least once.

I’ve got a little bit over a month to get in shape for this one.  Should be a lot of fun!

Indianapolis Mayor considering Gun Control

Even though I don’t live in Marion County/Indianapolis any longer, I still get extremely concerned whenever the sitting Mayor of Indianapolis starts talking about any kind of gun control.  You see, whenever Marion County does something “progressive”, all the other counties and cities around Indianapolis get the idea that imitating it would be a great idea.  For example, Indianapolis has a smoking ban in certain bars and restaurants.  Coming soon to Hamilton County – a smoking ban!So needless to say, when I see statements like this from Greg Ballard, Mayor of Indianapolis (and ostensibly a conservative Republican) I tend to get a little…nervous.

The mayor of Indianapolis is considering a bold and probably controversial step to curb violent crime in the city.  Then in November, Ballard got inspiration from, of all places, a football star that shot himself in the leg. Giant Plaxico Burress is fighting 3 years in prison, not for the shooting, but for the weapon. Even if Burress had never fired, New York has mandatory jail time for carrying a gun that’s not registered with the city. Ballard thinks what works there might also work in Indy. “I wonder about our gun laws. Should we be harsher with our gun laws,” said Ballard. “I’d like to look at gun laws, frankly. Penalties for illegal guns,” said Ballard. Ballard said he knows many will oppose the idea, and he wants to make clear what kind of guns he’d target. “I have no problem with second amendment legal guns. No problem what so ever on that. It’s the illegal guns that are concerning,” said Ballard. New York’s mayor pushed the issue through at the city level. But, Ballard said he’d have to work with state government and acknowledges Indiana lawmakers may not have the time in 2009.

A couple of thoughts here.  First off, he’s using that weasel word “illegal gun”, which is a great catch-all category for “guns we don’t like”.  Secondly, he is right about one thing – getting some kind of gun control passed for Indianapolis would have to happen at the state level.  Thankfully, Indiana has a preemption law, which means that no city, county, or locality can pass a law which goes counter to state laws.  Of course, that hasn’t stopped various state representatives from trying to get that law overturned, but so far they’ve been unsuccessful.I’m also kind of regretting that I supported Mayor Ballard’s campaign now – I figured he was definitely an upgrade over Bart Peterson, who desperately wanted to turn Indianapolis into “Chicago-lite”.  Now, I might have to reconsider that. What this means for Hoosier gun owners is that we’ll need to be extremely vigilant at the tail end of this legislative session and even more so for the duration of the 2009 session at the State House.  Mayor Ballard is correct in that any gun control initiative is going to have to come from the State level in one way or the other.  It’s extremely important that we stay on guard for these measures, and if they do come up that we burn up the phone lines to our elected representatives.  Indiana is one of the most 2nd Amendment friendly states in the country, and personally I’d like to keep it that way.

Chicago Gun Ban upheld in court

For now.

Todd Vandermyde, Illinois legislative liaison for the NRA, called today’s ruling a temporary victory for the city.“It was expected. We went to court knowing it’s going to take a higher court’s ruling. As Judge Shadur enumerated in his decision, he’s still bound by the precedent set by the 7th Circuit [Court of Appeals]. He wasn’t going to stick his neck out on an issue that the 7th Circuit hasn’t changed its mind on,” he said.

And so the appeal process will continue, and the Chicago taxpayers will have to shell out more money to support an illegal law passed by their corrupt mayor.Makes me proud to be a Hoosier.
