NRA Files Amicus brief in Chicago Gun Ban case

For those of you that like to read all this stuff, here’s a copy of NRA’s amicus brief in the Chicago Gun Ban case.

NRA amicus Brief pdf file

For more information on the Chicago Gun Ban case, check out last week’s Gun Nuts Radio, featuring Ashley Varner of the NRA.

Update: Also, I just learned from Uncle that today is the NRA’s birthday.  So happy birthday, NRA – let’s keep up the good work for another 138 years!

Gun Nuts Tonight: What's the best round for serial killers?

Tonight’s Gun Nuts Radio should be an interesting show, rest assured of that.  We were going to do a show on defensive ammo selection, and while that’s going to be the bottom half of the show, the top half is going to be talking about Cleveland’s serial killer, a convicted felon that after serving 15 years in prison was released…and murdered 5-11 people in the next 4 years.  This is exactly the kind of story that hits home with listeners, so we’re going to be discussing that.  Check it out at www.blogtalkradio.com/gunnuts tonight at 9pm Eastern time.

After that, Breda and I will be talking about defensive ammo selection for your concealed carry gun.  For the record, the best round to use against serial killers is the round you have with you in the gun you’re carrying – following my “any stool in a barfight” theory of combat.  But you won’t want to miss tonight’s show as we take a look at terminal ballistics, the FBI protocols, and debunk the myth of the one-shot stop!  That’s all tonight at 9pm Eastern time at www.blogtalkradio.com/gunnuts – be there!

Reinventing the wheel

You have by now probably seen the video of the USPSA shooter that uses the inertia of the slide to chamber a round in his Glock with one hand.  If not, the Firearm Blog has the video.  Sebastian also hauls out his nerd card and does the math to work out the physics of the Glock Trick (which is not a trick).

It is a very cool trick, and it can be replicated; however from a competition standpoint it’s just that – a cute stunt.  I doubt very much that by doing the slide with one hand, you save any time over coming over the top of the gun and racking the slide in a traditional controlled manner.  Yes, it looks cool, but it also increases your chances of something bad happening.  Being a safety officer, I don’t exactly have to stretch my imagination to see someone trying this trick and muzzling themselves, having an ND, or straight up dropping their gun.

I’m not saying that I don’t think it’s a cool video, because it is.  My problem is that it’s not practical.  It falls squarely under the reinventing the wheel because if (and this is a big if) you save any time doing it, I doubt very much that you couldn’t shave that same amount of time by practicing your loading technique until it was smooth and then practicing your strong hand shooting to get better at that.

Which ultimately is the moral of the story – instead of burning valuable practice time learning neat tricks like this, that time would be better spent becoming a better shooter.  Worried about your ability to load your gun?  Practice with snap caps.  Trying to shave some time on strong hand only stages?  Practice shooting strong hand only.  Neat tricks are not a substitute for good shooting skills, no matter how rad they look on YouTube.

Update: Apparently, great minds think alike.  3 minutes after I published this post, Tam published her thoughts on the matter.

Brookville Indiana passes Gun Ban

Alright Hoosiers, if you’re one of my readers from Franklin County, and especially the Town of Brookville then pay attention.  The Town of Brookville recently passed an ordinance prohibiting ordnance (I crack myself up) on town property.  For those that don’t know, Brookville is a small community about 50 minutes west of Cincinnati, OH.  Here’s the key passage from the ordinance:

No person shall carry or otherwise possesses (sic) a deadly weapon, as defined in Indiana Code 35-41-1-18, as amended, on any public property owned or leased by the town, or at any board meeting, hearing, or executive session of the Town of Brookville, regardless of whether the person has a permit to carry a weapon (emphasis mine).  The Town Council, in its discretion, reserves the right to subject all in attendance at a meeting, hearing, and/or session in which a contention issue will be discussed, to a pat down search or a metal detector wand search to verify compliance with this resolution.  Said pat downs or metal detector wand shall be performed by a uniformed officer of the Town of Brookville Police Department or the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department.

As of right now, calls to the Brookville Town Clerk are being referred to the city attorney, Michael Wilhelm.  Mr. Wilhelm declared that the ordinance could be repealed or revoked if town residents contact the Council to request a meeting to discuss the issue.  Please contact your town council members immediately and let them know that you want a meeting to revisit and get rid of this ordinance!  Remember, this ordinance prohibits carry in any property owned or leased by the city, which means that if you want to go for a walk in the park, you have to leave your firearms at home, can’t even lock them in the car.

Here’s the contact info for the Town Council:

Town Council: 765-647-3322
Mike Biltz – President
Rene Stivers – VP
Darrel Flaspohler
Sam Schuck
Linda Dunn – Clerk/Tresurer
Town Attorney, Mike Wilhelm: 765-647-4161

If you’re a resident of Brookville, contact the Town Council ASAP to get this overturned.

I’ve also put the rest of the ordinance behind the jump so you can read the full text.

CZ-52 and Tokarevs at the Arms Room

Tam has a new post up at the Arms Room about some serious commie guns, the CZ52 and a Tokarev, both chambered in 7.62 Goofy-Ass, or whatever the name of that round is.  Tam actually let me shoot both of these guns, and having never shot a CZ-52 or a Tokarev before, I can say it was an interesting experience.  The Tok for example fits in your hand roughly like an old school Browning, the lines make sense and the ergonomics aren’t terrible.  They’re not great, because the concept of a “high hands” grip didn’t exist back then, but hey, it’s not like the Tok was ever used to do anything other than cap dissidents in the back of the skull, right?

The CZ52 on the other hand was a nightmare of ergonomics.  I’m not even going to mention the trigger pull on the guns, because my fish scale only goes to 25 lbs, however the ergonomics on the CZ were basically all wrong.  If you look at the pictures at The Arms Room, notice how the “beavertail” of the CZ52 starts kind of low on the grip.  What that does is completely baffle any attempt to get a really high grip on the grip, and in fact it actually exacerbated muzzle flip.  However, it wasn’t entirely unpleasant to shoot, because aside from the wretched ergonomics and appalling trigger, recoil with the 7.62 McSilly round was actually quite mild.

In fact, if you’re one of the bajillion guys that bought a CZ52 with your C&R license and were thinking about using it for a carry pistol, Novak actually makes a set of sights for the gun.  You can also buy a decent hollow point round for the gun from Wolf Gold, and while I’d rather have a 9mm, an 85 grain JHP at 1600 feet per second isn’t anything I’d volunteer to get shot with.  Now if only you could fix the grip angle on the CZ-52…

Shocking News: The Olympic Committee hates guns

I can’t really say I’m surprised that they’re getting rid of the guns in the Pentathlon.  I suppose next the rifles in the biathlon during the Winter Olympics will be replaced with a Nerf gun.  Then back to the summer Olympics, the shotgun, pistol, and rifle events will all be replaced with coordinated Team Dart-Throwing…until the EU bans possessions of darts as “lethal ordnance”.
