England, oh England

What has happened to you?

A shopkeeper could be charged with murder after defending himself against an armed robber who was killed by his own knife, police said yesterday.

Just so you’re 100% clear, a shopkeeper was defending himself against a career criminal and during the course of the fight fatally wounded his attacker.  Which apparently equals murder, in England.

Still waiting on my money

As usual, the Brady Campaign doesn’t understand the difference between real grassroots and astroturf.

It’s an important distinction to make, because one of the great strengths of the pro-gun movement is our ability to get the grassroots out; reference what happened to the anti-gun protests in Virginia where the VCDL had more than double the numbers of the anti-groups present.

The other thing that strikes me as odd about the constant assertions that we’re all paid is shills is that it seems kind of like a desperate move on the part of the Brady Campaign.  They have never been able to motivate the grassroots like the pro-gun movement can, and when they do it’s usually because they’re making shady (but legal)  moves behind the scenes.

I can personally attest that the only money I’ve made from blogging has come from selling ads and Toddy Coffee.  Like everyone has pointed out, this is real grassroots, I do this because I like to write and I’m passionate about the shooting sports.

California Hoplophobia

Cal State University campus shut down due to reports of a man carrying an assault rifle.

A report of a man armed with an assault weapon prompted police to shut down the California State University, Dominguez Hills, campus Thursday before they learned the person was an ROTC student carrying a fake rifle.

A ROTC kid with a drill rifle, which is a non-firing reproduction of usually an ’03 Springfield or a Garand is not the same thing as a guy with an “assault rifle”.  Now, he wasn’t in uniform, so it might have been slightly more difficult for whoever called the cops, but come on.

A couple of thoughts – 1: I wish that people could tell the difference between a guy with a drill rifle and someone bent on mass murder.  2: That cadet really should have put the rifle in a bag.  It goes back to what I was saying the other day about airsoft guns, i.e. you should assume that everyone else is an idiot.  If you’re carrying something that looks like a gun, operating rule Numero Uno should be that EVERYONE ELSE is going to think it’s a gun, and you should act accordingly.

Of course, I’m also not surprised that a campus in California freaks out because a ROTC kid forgot to stow his drill rifle.  I’d like to think that if that happened at Purdue, there would not be a campus wide lockdown.  Of course, the thought of actually trying to “lock down” Purdue makes me giggle a bit, because it’s basically a small town.

Snakes on a plane!

Global warming will apparently bring Burmese Pythons to YOUR BACKYARD.

No worries, they usually get about 23 feet long and weigh around 200 pounds. I wouldn’t recommend a pistol, unless you’re a great shot, and all those “snake shot” loads won’t get the job done.

A 20 gauge shotgun with #4 or BB shot aimed for the head on the other hand will get the job done. If you’re uncomfortable with birdshot, use a buck load with small pellets, like #3 buck so you get a lot of coverage on the target.

Edit: I crack myself up.

“Maybe this will cut down on the spread of stupid little yip dogs.”

Stupid hippies

So, some teachers decided to try a “social experiment” with a bunch of roughly 8 year old kids, and they were so proud of turning them into little socialists that they wrote it up.

The article itself is long and kind of tedious, but the gist of it is that a bunch of kids decided to build a “Legotown” at their afterschool program, which quickly turned into a capitalist society with trade of lego pieces, ownership of various lego structures, etc.

Needless to say, the stupid hippy teachers couldn’t stand having their kids be capitalists and decided to intervene.

the children were building their assumptions about ownership and the social power it conveys — assumptions that mirrored those of a class-based, capitalist society — a society that we teachers believe to be unjust and oppressive. As we watched the children build, we became increasingly concerned.

Anyway, they intervened and trained the kids in being good little commies, and here was the end result:

  • All structures are public structures. Everyone can use all the Lego structures. But only the builder or people who have her or his permission are allowed to change a structure.
  • Lego people can be saved only by a “team” of kids, not by individuals.
  • All structures will be standard sizes.

With these three agreements — which distilled months of social justice exploration into a few simple tenets of community use of resources — we returned the Legos to their place of honor in the classroom.

These teachers succeeded at doing something I did not believe was possible.  No, it’s not teach kids about how awesome socialism is; their feat is much more difficult than brainwashing an eight-year old.  They managed to make playing Lego not fun.

If you read the entire article, which I encourage you to do, you’ll probably get as mad as I am for both reasons.  The reactions of the teachers were essentially “oh god capitalism and property ownership, shit we can’t have that” and their ensuing social experiment are so retarded that it would be funny if it wasn’t for that at least one of those 8 year olds will probably believe this crap for the rest of his life.

Thankfully, 8 year old kids are, well, 8 years old, and I have very little doubt that the social engineering will fall apart in short order, as all true socialist societies do.  Because one kid will realize he can get more if he owns stuff – and there are fewer more powerful motivators than greed.

Nebraska Assault Weapons Ban

State Sen. Brad Ashford has re-written his assault weapons ban in Nebraska, which has cleared committee and is now in the full legislature.

Ashford wants to create a blue ribbon, Assault Weapons Commission, that will report back to the Legislature by next February 1st.

The commission would list which specific assault weapons should be banned.

I can just imagine those committee meetings now: “Guys, this gun looks scary, let’s ban it.”  And during all this, there’s one lone guy on the committee who’s not dumb, and keeps pointing out things like “It’s a .22!” or “it’s a hunting rifle!” to no avail.

Corruption? What corruption?

Talk about messed up.

The lobbying firm that runs the Ammunition Accountability web site is Gordon Thomas Honeywell, presumably their Governmental Affairs Group.  You will notice that they list ACS as a client.  Important to note that until recently Gordon Thomas Honeywell Governmental Affairs was known as Smith Alling Lane Government Affairs.

Tim Shellberg, who is President of GTH Government Affairs has several times donated to the campaign of  Washington State Representative Allister O’Brien, who is the lead sponsor of the Washington Ammunition encoding bill.  I also notice that Gun Owners Action League of Washington has donated quite a bit to his campaign as well.  Not enough it would seem.  O’Brien failed to win an endorsement from NRA last election.

Let me be clear

Whenever I read blog entries and news articles like this one, I have a very strong mixed reaction.  On the one, I often feel like the cops are overreacting and engaging in histrionics over what amount to toys, on the other hand I also believe that they’re making a valid point.  If some dumb kid pointed an airsoft gun and me and was yelling or some shit, I’ve got less than a second to decide that it’s an airsoft/real gun and shoot/no shoot.

So here’s my advice to the Special Air Softers out there.  If you’re playing airsoft, and you hear someone say “drop the gun”, do not whip around with your blaster in hand to see who said.  DROP.  THE.  GUN.  Immediately.

I might take some flack from people who think I’m kowtowing to authority or whatever, but I honestly don’t care.  If you’re going to mess around with toys that look a lot like real guns, you need to be responsible with them.  If you’re going to play with them in public places where getting the cops called on you is a possibility, you need to understand how to deal with the police.

If Officer Friendly gets a “man with a gun” call, he has no idea of knowing if it’s a kid with an airsoft or a gangbanger with a Hi-Point.  Don’t do something stupid, don’t carry your airsoft tucked into your belt, and if confronted by an officer, comply instantly.

Morals and Ethics?

No, I’m not talking about the freshman class at the Academy, I’m talking about the bill in Illinois to add “moral and ethical considerations” to owning a handgun.

Now, I don’t know about you, but “moral and ethical considerations” sound like another word for “you can’t own a gun unless We, your Betters, approve it you little peon”.  I’m strongly opposed to arbitrary moral judgments of any type, because it’s a system that’s rife for abuse.

When you use arbitrary judgment calls like morals and ethics, you can deny anyone’s right to self-defense simply because you don’t like the cut of their jib.  “You’re an atheist and I’m a Christian, no gun for you.”  “You’re pro-life and I’m pro-choice, no gun for you.”

It’s a broken system before it even gets installed.
