Vegas as a Tourist

As I mentioned, Mrs. Ahab is in here with me in Las Vegas. We did a little sightseeing over the weekend in the Vegas area, and took a few pictures of the kitsch just to say we could. Having been in Vegas for going on three months, this is the first time that I’ve done the tourist thing, as when I was alone I had no real desire to fly solo.

We stayed for the weekend at the MGM Grand, which was pretty pimp. Not a lot of pictures, because we were busy hanging out at the pool/gambling/drinking. I should point out that Mrs. Ahab and I pretty much fail at Vegas, since we only lost like 40 bucks while gambling. Here are some pictures.

We took a photo of the lion outside the MGM grand. To give you a sense of scale, it’s roughly the same size as a pair of tractor-trailers. As always, click each picture for the fullsize version.

The fake New York skyline of the “New York, New York” casino.

The view from our room at night. I didn’t have a tripod handy, so it ended up looking like some ephemeral green ghosts were rising from the lights to claim my soul.

That was pretty much it for the Vegas photos; quite honestly Vegas just doesn’t blow my skirt up that much. It’s like my hometown of Lancaster, CA got too big for its britches and started allowing gambling.

What was cool was the Grand Canyon, which I’m working up a post on as we speak.

I’m back

Sorry for lack of blaggage over the last two days.  As you may know, I’m currently in Las Vegas on extended assignment for my “real job”.  Mrs. Ahab is out to visit this week, so needless to say spending time with my wife has taken priority over blogging for at least a couple of days.

That being said, the podcast will go up on Wednesday, and I promise that it will be awesome.  Also, the Mrs. and I went to the Grand Canyon yesterday, so expect to see a photoblog of that coming up in the next couple of hours.

Pin Shooting

As Mr. Completely mentioned, I’m getting ready for my first go at Bowling Pin shooting coming up here in a few weeks; actually I’m going to get back from Vegas and shoot the match the next day, having not really touched a gun for almost three months due to being in Las Vegas on business.

I’m nervous and excited, everyone tells me it’s going to be a lot of fun and that I’ll have a great time.  Any advice from veteran pin shooters out there?

Rest in Peace, Charlton Heston

Statement from Wayne LaPierre:

Today, my heart is heavy with the loss of Charlton Heston.

America has lost a great patriot. The Second Amendment has lost a faithful friend. So have I, and so have four million NRA members and eighty million gun owners. And so has every American who cares about the Bill of Rights, individual liberty, and Freedom.

My heart is heavy, but not without a sense of pride. Pride in a man who devoted his life to his profession with grace and dignity. Pride in an American who devoted himself to civil rights, to correcting injustices around him, and to standing up for what he knew was right. Pride in a friend who stood with me and stood with fellow NRA members to preserve our freedom for future generations. Pride in a patriot who believed with every fiber of his being that our Bill of Rights is the foundation of our freedom that makes Americans singular among the masses of nations.

And now, Charlton Heston has passed that duty to us – the next generation. I am as proud to continue his cause as I am to have known him as my friend.

But today, my thoughts cannot leave the Heston family. They have always had my utmost respect and admiration and, today, they have my deepest sympathy and most earnest prayers. And they will always have my friendship.

For the longest time, I equated Charlton Heston’s face with the face of the NRA, and I am saddened to see him go.

11 days and counting until BAG Day – time to coalesce your wish list from the fifteen guns that are currently on it down to one or two or five candidates.  Here’s what I’m looking at for BAG Day, in no particular order:

  2. The Tactical Folding Stock M1 Carbine

What are you guys looking for?

Way to go Wyoming

The courts in Wyoming have decided to slap the federal government around for overstepping its legal boundaries.

The District Court ruled in favor of the sheriffs. In fact, they stated, Wyoming is a sovereign state and the duly elected sheriff of a county is the highest law enforcement official within a county and has law enforcement powers exceeding that of any other state or federal official.”

As I said in the comments at Uncle’s, this sounds like a pissing contest between the local sheriff and el federales, however it was my experience that said contests are usually started by the feds 9 times out 10.  So I’d imagine that the sheriff is probably tired of getting jerked around by some cowboy from BATFE.

Paul Helmke is a witch

Because apparently, he can speak with the dead and therefore know exactly what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would have wanted to say today.

Thirdpower hits it right on the head with this:

I think MLK would be more concerned w/ why inner city students have a 51.8% graduation rate. 90% Black on Black crime rates, the advocation and glorification of violence, and his former followers (Jackson and Sharpton) using racism and his legacy to enrich themselves and keep themselves in the public eye.

He also points out that MLK applied for, and was denied, a concealed carry permit under Alabama’s rather racist at-the-time gun laws.

Gun Smuggler arrested in Arizona

Remember those reports I scoffed at about guns being purchased in the US and smuggled into Mexico?  It appears that I was at least half-wrong; guns are being bought in the US and smuggled into Mexico, so I was wrong about that.  What I was right about was the guns were not being purchased legally or at gun shows.  That second link in the post is to the CNN article on the case, which displays both a remarkable amount of bias and not very much information.  For example, it makes sure to refer the FN Five-seveN as firing “cop killer” bullets, complete with a BATFE agent sounding like he’s reading from a Brady press release.

“What’s interesting about this gun, why it’s in high demand, is the nickname that it has in Mexico,” said William Newell, ATF special agent in charge, about the Fabrique National pistol. “It’s called ‘mata policias,’ or ‘cop killer.’ “

Earlier in the article, CNN also gets in the required dig at gun shops and gun shows, implying that US business are supplying the Mexican cartels.

Guns are difficult to buy legally in Mexico, but can be obtained just north of the border at gun shows and gun shops.

Now, if you just read the CNN article, based on those two excerpts, you’d probably think that Victor Varela (the smuggler) bought his guns legally and ran them into Mexico, right?  Well, CNN managed to completely neglect that salient point, which I found at the website for a local news station:

Tom Mangan, a spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said Varela’s network illegally bought the firearms in Arizona, transported them to New Mexico and then took them across the border.

And a little more digging produces a little more information which CNN left out, this time from Reuters:

ATF said Varela acquired a number of firearms, including handguns and several .50 caliber “Barrett” rifles, through illegal third-party sales called “straw purchases.”

Which, as we know are already illegal.  Of course, CNN “omitting” that this guy didn’t buy his guns from gun shops and gun shows isn’t really surprising, it’s pretty much par for the course these days.

Of course, the predictable result of this arrest will be crowing from the Brady Bunch and the VPC about how eeeeeeevil .50 BMG rifles are and how we need to close the “gun show loophole”; completely omitting that 1) this guy was caught, and 2) he didn’t buy his guns at a gun show.  A review of the facts would show that it’s already illegal to smuggle guns into Mexico, and it’s also illegal to purchase guns via a “straw purchase”, both of which this guy did.  But the VPC and Brady Bunch will insist that just one more law would have been the magic law that stopped this guy from committing his crime.

This guy was breaking loads of federal and local laws already, only a complete fool would think that one more law would have made a difference.  As it is, what made a difference was diligent efforts from local law enforcement agents to investigate and enforce the laws on the books.  More laws aren’t going to solve the problem – going after scumbags who scoff at our laws is going to have an effect on crime.
