College students don’t need to be armed

Because when a crazy person is trying to smash your apartment door in, the 911 operator will hang up on you.

My heart breaks for the family that lost their daughter – and beyond that I’m absolutely shocked at conduct of the 911 dispatcher that dealt with the girl’s call.  Bottom line: that dispatcher should be fired right now, and not allowed to work for emergency services ever again.  That dispatcher has to live with the fact that Brittany Zimmermann died in part because of the dispatcher’s utter failure to do their job.

But remember, pro-gun advocates are crazy for suggesting that college students who meet the legal requirements be allowed to own and carry firearms on campus.

No longer a subject

Breda experiences the liberation and responsibility of her carry permit for the first time.

“There. It’s official. You are a now free person, no longer a subject.” I looked over at him and started laughing. I felt my world change. It’s a wild feeling – enormous freedom and enormous responsibility all at once.

I am not going to quote Spider-Man, because let’s face it, half of you nerds were thinking it anyway.  But it is appropriate in this instance, because since we choose to arm ourselves in public, we must hold ourselves to a higher standard.

Because I carry concealed, I can’t get road rage.  Because I carry concealed, I can’t allow myself to lose control of my temper.  Because I carry concealed, I can’t allow myself to be provoked into altercations.  I can never, ever, initiate violence against another person unless a reasonable person would believe that I had been in imminent danger of death or grievous bodily harm.

If you carry, you have to hold yourself to the highest standard of personal conduct possible.  An armed society is a polite society, because (most) people who choose to arm themselves legally understand the responsibility inherent in their choice.

Obama’s New “Adviser”

So, after he ditched Jerry Wright, it seems that Obama really just couldn’t survive without another adviser – so in a stunning PR move he apparently has tapped the Reverend Michael Pfleger.

If you don’t remember the Right Reverend Pfleger, he’s the Chicago-area priest who threatened to murder licensed gunshop owners.  It’s nice to know that Obama is really finding advisers who are going to appeal to those bitter gun owners all over rural Indiana.

Indiana Primary

Vote reminder: if you’re a resident of the 5th Congressional District of Indiana, get out to the primary on May 6th and vote for Dan Burton in the Republican Primary.

If you’re a voter who is often motivated by gun rights and the right to keep and bear arms, then you should have a look at Dan’s strong track record on 2nd Amendment issues, as well as his “A” rating by the NRA, unlike his opponent who is associated with anti-gun groups.

I had a couple of readers email me and ask me why I’m getting so pumped up over this primary, and the 5th District campaign in general.  There are a couple of reasons, the primary one being that with the possibility of an extremely anti-gun president we need all the strong pro-gun members of congress possible.  Secondly, I’m fired up over it because the 5th District is where I live, it’s my home; and I’ll be damned if I’m not going to do everything I can to ensure that my representative actually represents me and my interests.

So that’s about it – get out and vote on May 6th.  Not sure where to go to cast your ballot in the primary?  Click on this link to find your Indiana polling place.  I’m glad I did that, because mine has changed from the last election.  I’ll be at Christ the Savior Lutheran Church, on 126th St, sometime in the early-ass morning on May 6th.

Hillary with big lead

The most recent data is showing Hillary way out in front of Obamessiah with something like a 10% lead in the polls.

I’m almost surprised at how big her lead is, since something like 25% of Indiana is in Chicago’s media area (they get Chicago TV stations as their “local” channels), so you’d think that Obama might have a better chance of carrying this state than he did in other “traditional” Democrat states.

Honestly, my gut feeling is that this Reverend Wright thing is really hurting Obama here in Indiana.   Shockingly enough, Hoosiers don’t like to be told that we’re all a bunch of racists – that sort of thing doesn’t usually play very well.

Things I did not know

Washington is an Open-Carry state:

Open carrying of firearms is not prohibited by law although trouble with some law enforcement agencies has been encountered while open carrying in the past, most notably in a case in Ellensburg, Washington.

With that being said, I don’t think I’ll be bringing my Beretta next time I go to Seattle to visit my family, as I’m relatively certain that being openly armed in downtown Hippyville Seattle is a surefire way to attracted undesirable attention from the local 5-Oh.

Interesting data on stopping power

Terminal ballistics as viewed from the morgue.  Thanks to Unc for the link.

There are a lot of interesting quotes in there, I like this one:

As for handguns, the name of the game is not only shot placement but how a properly-placed bullet acts once it gets there. I’ve seen folks killed by a bb to the eye and others survive after being hit by several well-placed rounds with a 9mm.

Indeed, one of the things that doesn’t get said enough is that because each person is different, person A may react completely different than person B to a gunshot wound in the exact same place.

Reply from Dr. McGoff’s campaign

As you know, I have enthusiastically endorsed Dan Burton in the 5th District Primary for our open Congressional seat.  A large part of that endorsement was Congressman Burton’s “A” rating from NRA, as well as Dr. McGoff’s involvement with various anti-gun groups.  I had emailed the campaign of Dr. McGoff about his interaction with the said anti-gun groups, and in the interest of full disclosure, I’m going to run the reply I received from his campaign manager.

John was never a formal member of the Indiana Partnership to Prevent Firearm Violence.  The extent of his involvement, as I understand it, is that while he was Marion County Coroner, the group would use documents from his office on deaths in Marion County to do their reports, but those were public documents that he could not refuse them.  To insinuate from that—which was his public duty as coroner—that he is a member of the group is overreaching.

John is a member of the NRA, and has been trained and certified to use an M16, .38, .45 and M9, and has had familiarization training on a 50 caliber weapon during the course of his 26 year military career (he is still serving as a full colonel in the Air National Guard).

I do appreciate the clarification, however this does not affect my vote.  Dan Burton has in the past clearly demonstrated himself as a friend and advocate of law-abiding gun owners, and despite any emails or comments from a campaign manager, Dr. McGoff’s level of involvement with the Indiana Partnership is still an open question to me.

I am still supporting Dan Burton in the 5th District Republican primary, and I encourage Hoosier voters residing in this district to get out and vote for Congressman Burton on May 6th in our primary.

NYC Lawsuit against gun makers dismissed

Hot news from NSSF:

NEWTOWN, Conn. — Today, a Manhattan-based federal appeals court ordered the dismissal of a lawsuit filed against firearms manufacturers by the City of New York that sought to hold the manufacturers responsible for the criminal misuse of firearms.

Judge Robert J. Miner, writing for the U.S. Court of Appeals, held the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, enacted in 2005, is constitutional and that Brooklyn, NY, federal court judge Jack B. Weinstein misinterpreted the law by not dismissing the case.

“We think Congress clearly intended to protect from vicarious liability members of the firearms industry who engage in the ‘lawful design, manufacture, marketing, distribution, importation, or sale’ of firearms,” said Judge Miner.

In dismissing the city’s claim that its suit fit within an exception to the act – a claim that would allow its case to go forward – the court wrote that the statute was “intended to shield the firearms industry from the vicarious liability for harm caused by firearms that were lawfully distributed into primary markets.”

Following the ruling by the court, Lawrence G. Keane, senior vice president and general counsel for the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) – the firearms industry’s trade association – said, “Today’s ruling is very gratifying to members of the firearms industry. In passing the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, Congress understood that frivolous lawsuits like New York City’s defied common sense and represented a clear abuse of the judicial system that threatened to bankrupt a responsible and law-abiding industry.”

The city’s lawsuit against the nation’s firearms manufacturers was originally filed by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in June 2000 and was continued by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.  Mayor Bloomberg is also suing out-of-state firearms retailers. That case will go to trial later this month before Judge Weinstein.

Today’s ruling is seen by many as another major setback for gun-control groups, principally the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, which pursued and funded many of the municipal lawsuits, including this New York City case, against the firearms industry.

Big victory for gun owners, gun shops, and gun manufacturers.  I believe this is the first decision where the Protection of Lawful Commerce Act has been used to dismiss a case in favor of the shooting sports industry.

Assault Weapons ban in Louisiana

HB 68 has been introduced in the Louisiana house – the text of the bill would make it one of the most draconian gun bans this side of of Washington DC.  Here is a partial list of firearms which would banned under HB 68:

Center Fire Rifles: Benelli R1; Browning BAR, Mark II Safari autoloaders, Browning Pump Rifle; Colt, Armalite, Les Baer, etc. Match Rifles; DSA Model SA58; Fabrique Nationale FAL; Harrington and Richardson Models 340, 360; H&K 770, 2000, SL6, SR9, 300, 630, 91, 93; Marlin Camp Carbine, Model 992; Mitchell Model LW-9; M-1 Carbine, all makes and models; Reising Model 60; Remington 7400, 740, 74, 4, 8 semi-autos; Remington Model 7600, 760 pump-actions; Ruger Deerfield, Mini-14, Ranch Rifle, Mini-30; Springfield M1A, Match, Super Match, SAR-48, SAR-4800, SAR-8; Valmet Hunter; Winchester Models 100, 1905, 1907, 1910; .22 Rimfire Rifles AMT Hunter; Anschutz Model 525 Deluxe; Armscorp Model 20C; AR-7 Explorer and Henry U.S.; Beretta Neos; Browning Buckmark; Charles Daly Field Grade, Superior Grade; CZ Model 511, 611; Daisy Models 2203, 2213; Harrington and Richardson Model 700; Ithaca X5-C, X15; Iver Johnson Trailblazer; Mauser Model 105; Mossberg Models 152, 350, 352; Reising Leatherneck; Remington Models 597, Nylon 77, 522; Ruger 10/22; Savage Models 64, 7, 1903, 1909; Marlin Models 522, 7000, 795, 795SS, 70; Thompson/Center Classic Benchmark; Weatherby Mark XXII; Winchester Models 77, 490.

This ban would include pump-action rifles on the list of banned weapons, and would extend to .22 rimfire rifles as well.  Do you like your 10/22?  Tough beans, Cedric Richmond thinks it’s an assault weapon.

I pulled this link from NRA-ILA, where they also have all the contact information for your state reps in Louisiana.  Call and email them now – make it clear that you do not support HB 68.
