NSSF First Shots Program

At the IDPA National Championships this year, NSSF put on one of their popular First Shots programs, and to hear the story it was a pretty huge success.

A full page ad in the match book informed competitors of the First Shots seminars and many volunteered assistance when they saw the turnout. IDPA area coordinators along with COR-BON, Smith &Wesson and Elite Operator Tactical team shooters were on hand to provide expert advise and work one-on-one with the shooters.

A school teacher who attended with her entire family said she thought the “seminar was awesome!” She was so enthusiastic about shooting her first bulls-eye that the entire family went on to spend quite a bit more time at the side matches shooting larger calibers.

Yeeeeesssss….bring those new shooters into the game.  Obviously, since I shoot IDPA, I’m excited to see that IDPA is working directly with First Shots to put on a program like this which will help attract the new shooters to the game.  I think that by introducing them to the shooting sports while surrounded by the competition environment also increases our chances of keeping that person as a shooter, which to my mind is almost more important than making a new shooter.

IDPA and NSSF should get well-deserved congratulations for this sort of event, it’s exactly what we need to ensure that we preserve our shooting heritage.

NRA expanding anti-Obama ads

Read the press release here.

Despite local TV stations being threatened by the Obama campaign, NRA is continuing to mount the pressure to expose Barack Obama’s anti-gun record.

In an attempt to suppress free speech rights protected under the First Amendment, Obama’s campaign has threatened television stations to stop airing the NRA-PVF ads under threat of revocation their FCC licenses. NRA-PVF has provided documented evidence to support the statements about Obama’s record in the ads.

Obama is still the most anti-gun candidate I’ve ever seen – he makes Bill Clinton look like a lifelong hunter and sport shooter.

We’ll give this one to Todd Jarrett

I just got the email from the IDPA match guys at Atlanta Conservation Club with the results from the match from this weekend.  I won the ESP division outright, and finished 3rd overall.  My two mikes on the 2nd to last stage ended up not mattering as there was a more than 5 second difference between me and 2nd place.

My target points down weren’t as spot on as they were last month, but the good news is that the new magazines in the Para worked like butter.  The gun ran and ran well; I had exactly one failure to feed on one stage, which I blame on me not holding the gun 20% tighter and getting my shock absorbers into it.  But a win is a win, and I’m pretty glad to have a had a positive match in my last IDPA match before the state championships.

I might actually be able to pull this one off.

The Future of the 2nd Amendment

I received an email from Soldier of Fortune Magazine this morning, with an editorial written by LTCOL Robert K. Brown (Ret) and Steve Schreiner, which also contained an interview with Bob Irwin of “The Gun Store” in Las Vegas.  With their permission, I’ve republished the entire editorial in its entirety here.

YOU Have the Future of the Second Amendment in Your Hands
(or in your voting booth)

By Lt. Col. Robert K. Brown, USAR (Ret.) and Steve Schreiner

In August of 1992, RKB had a meeting with Jeb Bush in Miami regarding the upcoming presidential election. After pleasantries were exchanged, the conversation quickly turned to whom the “gunnies” would support. Bush commented, in a rather snide manner, something to the effect that “They have no choice but to vote Republican. They would never vote for Clinton.” RKB countered, “But they do have a choice.” Bush replied, raising his eyebrows, “And what is that?” RKB replied, “They can stay home.” They did, and we got eight years of Slick Willie and Hillary.

If you want to save the Second Amendment and our guns, we cannot let this happen again!!

Keep in mind George W’s successor will nominate between two and four justices to the Supremes as well as numerous federal judges.

Bottom, bottom line regarding the upcoming presidential election and its potential subsequent impact on Second Amendment rights is this. No one can predict what the rulings will be of McCain-appointed justices to the Supreme Court regarding the Second Amendment…but we sure as hell can predict the rulings of any justices appointed by Nobama or Hillary or Biden.

And, therefore, anti-gun justices can reverse the Heller decision as easy as not. So that, gentle readers, is why we all have to vote, and vote for McCain.

We recently received a photo of the front of longtime SOF’er, Bob Irwin’s gun store in Vegas, strangely enough called “The Gun Store.” As you see in the photo, the sign he put up on the front of his store says it all. We decided to give Irwin a holler to see what he had to say regarding the importance of the upcoming elections.

SOF: From your perspective, how important is it for “gunnies” to vote in this election?

Irwin: It is crucial. Obama, Biden and a Democratic Congress will plot and connive to pass a massive antigun legislative agenda. Obama, a Chicago boy, hates guns. He doesn’t even own a dog, let alone a gun. McCain owns four dogs.

SOF:What about those individuals who say, “Neither candidate is satisfactory . . . I’m not going to vote”?

Irwin: They are fools. Obama is being attacked, but McCain is not yet (as we go to press) endorsed by NRA/ILA. Nobody is perfect, but by not voting they are giving the election to Obama/Biden. A non-vote is a vote for Obama/Biden.

SOF:What are your thoughts about the Libertarians and ex-congressman Bob Barr? And how they may impact on the future of the Second Amendment?

Irwin: Bob Barr is doing a huge disservice to the “gunnies.” His take from McCain is only partially balanced off by the votes Ralph Nader will take from Obama. If his ego is that big, then he needs to retire to an Alzheimer treatment center.

SOF: Do you mind if other gun stores put up a sign like you have on the front of your store?

Irwin: Be my guest. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

(SOF will print the photos of other gun stores that emulate Irwin. Bob Irwin is running for State Assembly in Nevada with four others to oppose a four-term Democrat.)

Update: SOF was kind enough to send along a copy of the photo that’s being referenced in the interview.  Here it is, for your viewing pleasure.

Gun Nuts Radio Tomorrow: Shooting sports!

Tomorrow night on Gun Nuts Radio at 9pm, we’re going to be talking about some competitive shooting disciplines.  The idea for the show is to provide the newbie shooter with all the information and data they need to “get into” a shooting sport, whether it’s IDPA, NRA Bullseye, or competitive ninja hunting (if it’s not a sport, it should be).  As usual, you’ll be able to reach the show by listening live at www.blogtalkradio.com/gunnuts and calling the show live at (347) 539-5436 to join the conversation.  Also, Breda will be back this week, covering some of the different shooting sports!

We’re also going to be starting the first of a multi-part series on What we can do in the upcoming election – we’ll be speaking with an NRA EVC from a heavily contested state about things that we as gun owners and sportsmen can do in the last month before the election.  As I’ve said, I do believe that this is the most critical election ever for our right to keep and bear arms – a loss here could reverse  all the momentum we’ve built up with a win in Heller and other arenas.

For information on how to get started in competition shooting as well as political updates on the right to keep and bear arms, tune in tomorrow night to Gun Nuts Radio at 9pm Eastern time.

Obama’s work to destroy the 2nd Amendment

Read this article.  It’s written by noted 2nd Amendment scholar and lawyer Dave Hardy about Obama’s work with the Joyce Foundation from 1994-2002, a time frame during which the Joyce Foundation employed tactics of questionable ethics in an effort to undermine and destroy the “individual rights” interpretation of the 2nd Amendment.

If you’re like the guy picture in this video at Sebastian’s blog you need to read Dave’s article, and understand that Obama isn’t even the slightest bit interested in defending your right to keep and bear arms.  When it comes to the 2nd Amendment, Obama’s record speaks pretty plainly that his only interest in the 2nd Amendment is one of political expediency.  He’ll say whatever it takes to get elected, and then watch out – his friends in the Joyce Campaign and the AHSA will come calling, and you can kiss your semi-autos and EBRs goodbye.

Read Dave Hardy’s article – and pass it on to any hunters, shooters, and sportsmen/women that you know.

IDPA this weekend

This Saturday (that would be tomorrow) I’ll be up at Atlanta Conservation Club shooting their monthly IDPA match.  This is the last regular match before the State Championship on October 25th, and will have some stages that are being demo’d to determine their suitability for the state championship.

As usual, I’ll be running my ParaUSA 16-40 Limited, since this is the gun I entered for the State Championship.  I think I’ve got the hiccups in my magazines worked out, so I’m looking forward to a good match.  Hope to see you there tomorrow morning!
