Hope vs. Facts

Thank my wife for the article.

Hopey-Changey:

Barack Obama is committed to creating good, middle-class jobs, and wants to end tax breaks for corporations that send American jobs overseas. He will protect Social Security and has a plan to make health care affordable for all Americans. Obama will be a candidate that stands with working people, not the corporate elite.

John McCain has been part and parcel of the war on working people. He’s stood with George W. Bush to protect the interests of the very wealthy and his lobbyist friends from Big Oil and corporate America.

The middle class is disappearing — America’s workers can’t afford another day of the disastrous Bush policies.

There’s no question that our very future — and our children’s futures — are at stake in this election. That’s why I believe Americans will make history this November and turn our nation in a new direction.

Actual Facts:

There are at least three necessary ingredients for jumpstarting a faltering economy. John McCain embraces all three; Barack Obama shuns them. It’s just that simple.

Free Trade — Economist Milton Friedman once said that of all the pro-growth policies a government should adopt, free trade is the most important. Former Federal Reserve Bank Chairman Alan Greenspan has said that taxing trade between countries makes no more economic sense than taxing trade between states.

McCain aggressively pushes free trade agreements. Obama, especially since pandering to the union vote in the Ohio and Pennsylvania primaries, talks like a protectionist and even opposes the Colombia Free Trade Agreement.

Low, simplified taxes —  McCain maintains the current tax rates on income, capital gains and dividends and cuts the corporate tax rate. Obama proposes numerous “tax cuts,” many of which are nothing more than income transfers to people who don’t pay taxes. He would complicate the tax code and, because he’s targeting the cuts, he gets to pick the economic winners and losers.

Reduced government spending and regulations — According to the National Taxpayers Union Foundation, during the first session of the 110th Congress:

  •  McCain sponsored or cosponsored 22 bills, which would have increased federal spending by $8 billion annually.
  • Obama sponsored or cosponsored 114 bills, increasing federal spending $75 billion annually.

That’s a little more than $9 of government spending for Obama for every $1 for McCain.

Pwnt!

Gun Nuts Radio: Your favorite gun

And activism, which we discussed in the top half of the show.  You can (of course) listen to the archive copy of the show here, or if you prefer download an .mp3 copy of the show or just click the embedded player below this to listen.

While the segment on activism and being informed was valuable, the part of the show that I personally enjoyed most was where we took call-ins from our dedicated listeners who told us their stories about their personal favorite guns. I talked about my Marlin 25M (which I promise I’ll blog about soon), Breda talked about the 1911s she covets, and it just took off from there. One of my favorite stories of the night was Jay G, who talked about the Colt Official Police that was his grandfather’s gun that he carried on the force.

The last half hour of the show was almost touching – the talking of all the guns that were passed down from generation to generation really struck a chord with me; and I hope that when you listen to the show, it will for you as well.

Action Airgun Endorsement

I’ve been shooting Action Airgun for a month now – and I’m pleased to say that I can now throw my full support behind it, and offer an unconditional endorsement of their game.  Up until this most recent week, they had an issue with scoring system, which was extremely frustrating for a guy who is described as “hyper competitive” by his own wife.

However, it appears that the scoring issue has been fixed, so now after a month’s worth of shooting let me offer my review of Action Airgun, starting with the kit that I was sent to shoot the game.  The kit itself comes with the following items:

  1. Gun
  2. Targets and Stands
  3. Safety glasses
  4. Ammo
  5. CO2 cartridges
  6. Holster
  7. Timer

The central piece of the kit is of course, the gun.  The gun itself is pretty light, right up until you insert the magazine, which adds a lot of heft to the gun.  While the balance isn’t exactly the same as on my Para 16-40 Limited,  it’s close enough that the Action Airgun pistol makes a reasonable simulacrum.  Because it’s so heavy, there is no recoil whatsoever, although the slide reciprocating does throw your sight picture off in between shots.  At the distances required to shoot the game, the pistol is more than accurate enough to hit the targets that are provided as well.

The targets themselves are small foam blocks, with about the same frontal surface area as a playing card.  One side has a gold marker for use as a “shoot” target, and the other side has a red marker to indicate when that target is being used as a “no-shoot”.  The target stands are two large cardboard tables with a grid layout indicating where the targets will placed for each corresponding stage.  One of the things that makes the sport so much fun is the size of the targets – even the gun has no recoil and is accurate, hitting a playing card at 16 feet is a lot harder than you’d think, especially if you’re trying to do it in a hurry.  There have been more than one string where I’ve been smoking fast on the draw and first shot, only to see my BB sail past the target and into the backstop.

The safety glasses pretty standard fare, I actually stopped using the included ones in favor of my own glasses because my glasses are more comfortable.  But they do the job of stopping bounce-back BBs from doing any damage to your eyes.

The ammo provided are .20 gram plastic 6mm airsoft BBs – after a month of use I’m not even halfway through the jar they provided.  The CO2 cartridges on the other hand are something you’re going to use a lot of.  I buy bulk packs of 25 cartridges from Gander Mountain, that way I can save some money on the cartridge.  The reason why the cartridges are consumed so quickly is because the CO2 has to both power the BB and operate the slide of the gun, which unfortunately uses a lot of juice.

The holster is unremarkable – a standard nylon sausage wrapper, but it does the job of retaining the pistol.  When I’m using the gun to practice for IDPA, I use my competition rig, as the pistol fits quite well.  I do use the standard Action Airgun holster for all AA Courses of Fire.

The final item is the timer.  It’s a CED 7000 timer, which has been tuned up a bit to be sensitive to the sounds of the airgun going off.  This is actually the neatest item in the kit for me, because it allows me to practice centerfire shooting as well.  The dual use utility really makes this a steal.

Action Airgun is fun – and it’s easily shared as well.  Mrs. Ahab is shooting with me, and having a blast doing so.  The dual use of shooting in a weekly competition along with my ability to practice for centerfire matches would certianly make the purchase of this kit worth it for next season.  If you’re shooting this game and not uploading your scores, you should start recording and uploading!

In the season standings, I’m currently in 3rd place – 20 seconds out of first.  I’ll need to put together a strong rest of the season to get into 1st place, as the current leader LaVaca has been tearing through the courses of fire.  With 9 weeks left to go, I’ve certainly got my work cut out for me.

Tonight on Gun Nuts

We are doing a slight format change tonight on Gun Nuts Radio – instead of having one dedicated topic for the duration of the hour, tonight we’ll be shifting to a “two-topic” format.  Tonight at 9pm Eastern, tune in to the top half of the hour for a discussion of grassroots activism and how it can directly impact this extremely important election; then in the bottom half of the hour, stick around while Breda, myself, and our listeners talk about our favorite firearms and why.

For both halves of the show, if you’d like to call in and share your views and opinions, our listener call in line is (347) 539-5436 – and if you’re listening live at www.blogtalkradio.com/gunnuts you’ll be able to participate in the conversation. Join Breda and I tonight at 9pm Eastern to talk a little bit of guns, a little bit of politics, and a lot of fun.

College Admins say:

Students are too drunk and irresponsible to own guns!  Up in Muncie, Indiana – not too far from where I live, the Students for Concealed Carry on Campus are working on an awareness campaign.  Indiana’s state laws allow colleges and institutions the right to forbid weapons on their campuses, which is precisely what SCCC are trying to overturn, so that students who pass the background check and are legally allowed to own firearms can carry concealed on campus.  As usual, this brings the usual objections from the administrators.

The Ball State Administration is adamantly against weapons on campus. Its police force said it would be at an extreme disadvantage if a shooting spree occurred and people were armed.

“When trained police officers come on to a scene, if you don’t allow guns on campus, you know who the assailant is when you come into the room,” said Associate Vice President Tony Proudfoot.

This is true – the assailant is one the standing on the piles of dead bodies of unarmed students.  I’m not trying to be hyperbolic here or anything, but they are right when they say that it’s easy to tell who the badguy is when everyone else is unarmed and dead.  This is one of the flimsiest arguments that the anti-gun factions put out when they talk about campus carry, how if there was a shooting the cops wouldn’t have any idea who the good guys or the badguys are.  It’s patently ludicrous, and it’s just being used as a scare tactic argument.

“This is college. People get drunk, even smart people. They do crazy things,” said a student.

Hey look, guys!  It’s a projection argument!  This is the other standby of the anti-concealed carry faction, which boils down to “I’m not responsible enough to carry, so by default no one is.”  This is the same argument functionally as “I get road rage, so you can’t have a gun”, and the other horde of projection arguments that you see from time to time.  What makes this argument so lame is that all you have to do to refute it is find someone who is responsible and doesn’t “get drunk and do stupid things”.

In fact, you can do that right here – when I was in college, I had a concealed weapons permit, and sometimes I would forget to remove my gun and lock it in a secured container before crossing onto campus/college property.  In the 1 and a half years that I had my CCW on campus, had guns in my apartment, I never once mixed guns and alcohol – nor did my concealed gun leap out of the holster and start murdering people.  It’s almost like I was adult enough to make a grown-up decision and understand that alcohol and firearms don’t mix.

Ultimately though, campus carry is a serious hot button issue. When you bring children (and there is no denying that college students are functionally children for the most part, instead of young adults) into the equation of concealed carry, people tend to stop thinking logically and start thinking even more emotionally than they usually do. That’s what I’m such a big fan of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, as they do a lot of work to dispel the emotional arguments and focus on the facts and issues at hand.

Want

Oh my, what’s this?  A six inch barrel, single action only single stack 9mm from Smith and Wesson?  I can’t possibly think of anything I’d want to use that for.

Why is it that every time I look at the guns I have an say to myself “Self, you’ve got a pretty decent collection of shooting iron, and it fits most of your competitive needs, you can take it easy for a while” I end up seeing something like the S&W 952?

Let’s be honest here, can you really have too many all steel single action guns?

Quote of the Election

If you are in a battleground state, or even if you’re not, call your campaign headquarters and offer to help. They will be so grateful. And so…if a one-legged librarian can be on her feet for two hours, walking alone in an unfamiliar neighborhood, hoping to change hearts and minds, you can do it too.

From my good friend and co-host Breda.

That’s the sort of thing that gives me hope for this election.  Real hope, not manufactured “hopey-changey” bullcrap.

Sarah Palin Rally Summary

As I mentioned Friday afternoon, my wife and I attended the Sarah Palin rally at Verizon Wireless Music Center.  As a mentioned in the LiveBlog, the vast majority of the event was her hitting the major talking points of the campaign, such as taxes and national security.  However, there were a few interesting moments that I wanted to expound on.

First off as I noted in the liveblog was the palpable atomsphere of excitement.  If the national media is to be believed, we conservatives are simply sitting around waiting to lose (when we’re not too busy being racist, of course).  Wherever they got that idea, it certainly wasn’t at the Indiana Sarah Palin rally – the crowd was seriously juiced up and ready for her – I am not exaggerating a little when I saw it was almost like a rock concert.  It was that atmosphere of excitement and enthusiasm that actually had me feeling okay about John McCain’s chances come November.

The 2nd item is in regards to the protesters that were escorted out during the rally.  If you read Huffington Post then you might have seen the blog from a woman associated with Code Pink in Indiana – she claims that when they unveiled their banner that “angry men” tried to “rip it out of their hands”.  I was there.  I saw what happened, and I’m calling bullshit unless I see some video to prove me otherwise.  What I saw was them whip out their banner, and then a group of gentlemen try to stand in front of the banner so that you couldn’t see it.  Police moved in to separate the groups, and then the Code Pinkos continued to yell their slogans until the police escorted them out.  Never at any time did I see the men do anything violent, or try to “rip” anything out of the hands of the Code Pinkos.  I will admit that I did not see the entire altercation as my view was partially obfuscated, however unless I see actual video that proves me wrong; I have no reason to believe that this woman is doing anything other than “enhancing the truth” to make it sound like she was assaulted by mean old Republicans.

Finally, a comment on Sarah Palin – people who think she can’t speak well need to see her live.  Our Democrat friend who attended with us said that she did a good job – almost as if when Sarah Palin is subjected to the vagaries of MSM edited, she comes off as less than intelligent.

I had an excellent time at the rally, after it was all said and done.  It was certainly interesting for me to see a part of our political process that I had never before seen; and I think it shed a little bit of light for me personally on why exactly these rallies and events are important.  Ultimately, you win elections by having more votes than the other guy – and by energizing the people who are most likely to vote for you to actually get out and vote, you stand a much better chance of victory in the election itself.
