ICORE At Atlanta Conservation Club
I’m just going to blockpost the match announcement that our BoD sent out regarding ICORE (that’s wheelguns) at Atlanta Conservation Club.
I.C.O.R.E will return to Atlanta Conservation Club on May 30th. If you are interested, please read all of this message.
Caleb Giddings is the match director for this and all future ICORE events at ACC. If you are interested in shooting this match and being placed on his email list for ICORE, Caleb can be contacted at (redacted, yo). I would highly recommend you contact Caleb if you plan on attending so he can send out a broadcast in the event we have to cancel due to bad weather.
Information on our organization can be found at www.ICORE.org.
This will be a classifier match which will include 4 ICORE classifier stages plus a 30 round field course. The total round count minimum is 102 but bring lots of extra. We can use some help with setup on Saturday. We will not be doing any pre-setup on Friday.
Match details.

Registration 0920
Shooters meeting 0945
Hammer down after shooters meeting.
All times are nominal pending completion of setup.
Match fee = $20 which includes all classifier fees.

Hope to see you on the 30th.
Jeff
Right now, the weather for Saturday could rain, the weather robot says there’s a 40% chance of showers, but nothing too sporty on Saturday. If you’re interested in getting my ICORE mailing list for Indiana, leave a comment here and I’ll add you to the distro list.
CAA 870 Goodies
At The Firearm Blog, Steve has a link up to the new stock and forend from Command Arms for your Remington 870. I took one look at that sexay rail-sporting forend and I immediately thought “oh man, now I can hang the Crimson Trace vertical grip on my 870″. It’s probably one of the most tacticool and yet good ideas I’ve had in a while – sticking the integrated light/laser on a shotgun gives you the ability keep a more stable firing grip on your pump gun during CQB drills, as well as the obvious target designation of the Crimson Trace Light/Laser combo.
When I finally get around to doing that 870 build, you can be sure that those are the “must buy” list.
Look what followed me home
Tam was kind enough to loan me a roundgun for this weekend’s ICORE match at Atlanta Conservation Club. Not just any old revolver mind you, but a S&W 625-2 with a 5 inch barrel and a ramped front sight.

It has the Hogue wood stocks on it, which are a little big for my hands – if this wasn’t a loaner gun I get a similar stock from Hogue but sans the finger groves, which are an abomination in the eyes of the Lord. I’ve been dry firing the gun a bit in the evenings for practice, and thanks to having been shooting the Para LDA trigger for the past few months, have been able to manage the reset on the DA trigger just fine. The trick to keeping the front sight steady during rapid DA firing is to grip the gun 1000% tighter than I would a DA auto. I mean seriously, my grip in practice is to crush it until the front sight starts to shake, and then back off just a hair. This grip is why Jerry Miculek has those monster “Popeye” forearms.
Thanks go to Tam for loaning me the heater, and if you’re not doing anything this Saturday morning, why don’t you come on out to Atlanta Conservation Club for our first new and improved ICORE Match?
Shooting Goals
One of the most important thing you can do as a competitive shooter is to set goals for yourself – measurable, achievable goals that you actually take the time to write down, and then actually reference to see what your progress is on those goals. By setting benchmarks and standards for yourself in practice and in competition, you can measure your progress as a shooter and see what areas you need to focus your training. For example, here are my goals for the 2009 season, with “completed” goals in italics.
- Shoot expert class in IDPA SSP
- Shoot a 1500 at the Bianchi Cup (I just missed this one)
- Win 2 State level IDPA Championships in CDP
- Shoot respectable times at the 2009 Steel Challenge
- Shoot the IDPA Winter National Championship (early 2010)
- Shoot a sub 7 second El Presidente with my CDP gun
I actually have a more complete list of my training and shooting goals, which is constantly being added to or having goals removed as I meet them; for next year I’ve added a new scoring benchmark for Bianchi Cup, as well as other items.
In setting goals, and then posting them in a public place, it also helps increase the accountability factor. I can’t for example fudge and say I completely my Bianchi Cup by shooting a 1458, because that’s 42 points shy of what I wanted to shoot even if it is “close”. Like they say, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.
Set goals for yourself, and then share those goals with someone you trust. Train to meet those goals, and you’ll be a better shooter for it.
Gun Nuts Radio: Rob Pincus and ICE Training
Last night’s Gun Nuts Radio was a tremendously educational show, especially if you’re a shooter new to self-defense or the shooting sports. Special guest Rob Pincus was excellent, and was able to share a lot of tips and wisdom on defensive shooting in general, and the concept of “Combat Focused Shooting” in specific. A lot of the core of Combat Focus Shooting is using the body’s natural reaction to stress as a part of the fighting technique – this includes starting from the “startle” position (which is a lot like the surrender position), assuming a hunched over posture or crouch when firing (also similar to the combat isosceles used by all the pro shooters), as well as other segments. You can listen to the show with Rob Pincus by clicking on this link, or by clicking the “Gun Nuts Radio” logo on the right to be taken to the show page. Also, if you’d like to download the .mp3 of the show, you can do that by clicking here.
As usual, we are also available for download in iTunes – you can simply go to the iTunes store using your account and search for Gun Nuts, or you can follow the directions to subscribe to our .rss feed.
We’re rapidly approaching the 1 year anniversary of Gun Nuts Radio – our first show was June 23rd of 2008, so once we get to that monumental occasion, I think we’re going to have to have some kind of insane blow out on-air party. That’s less than a month away, so start thinking about how you the listener would like to celebrate a year of Gun Nuts – and email your ideas to me at [email protected].
Next week’s show should be fun – is currently a GREAT BIG SECRET though, and I can’t disclose any details until hopefully later in the week. Don’t forget to tune in though at 9pm Eastern time!

The Barricade Event is the only of the Bianchi Events that calls for truly fast shooting – the 10 yard stage is 6 shots in 5 seconds, which actually isn’t that fast, but it’s certainly faster than any of the other stages.

BJ Norris with his S&W 5906 on the plates. I asked why he shot a 5906 and not an M&P, and he told me because that the 5906 locks up very similarly to a 1911, making it a tad more inherently accurate than the M&P, and in this game, accuracy is everything.

Cutting down the Speed Steel Event. I like this photo, because even though you can’t see the shooters very well, you can see their results – the steel is on the way down, but hasn’t finished falling yet.

Gun Nuts Tonight
If your primary reason for owning firearms is self-defense, both in the home and out of the home, then you should not miss tonight’s Gun Nuts Radio which airs live at 9pm Eastern time on www.blogtalkradio.com/gunnuts. We’ll be talking with self-defense trainer and co-host of The Outdoor Channel’s hit show, The Best Defense – Rob Pincus. Rob is also the founder of ICE Training, and the inventor of the Combat Focused Shooting technique.
Rob will be joining us tonight, answering questions about personal defense, preparedness, shooting, and many other topics; as well as taking questions from our listening audience. If you have a question for Rob, feel free to call in at 347-539-5436 to join the conversation. Again, we air live tonight at 9pm Eastern time, so don’t miss tonight’s episode of Gun Nuts Radio!

Happy Memorial Day
Go cook some meat or something, what are you doing over here?
It’s hard for me to come up with a post that accurately conveys how I feel about Memorial Day – I am honored to live in a country so populated with the sons and daughters of great men and women that chose to give all they had in the service of our nation. To those who came before us and gave all they had, we remain eternally in your debt.
