PayPal cuts off donations to veteran's charity group

A lot of people are aware just how anti-gun PayPal is, as they have been known to freeze merchant accounts for conducting firearms related transactions. However, I didn’t think they would stoop so low as to cut off donations to Soldier’s Angels because the veteran’s charity group was rafling a firearm in conjunction with the Gun Blogger’s Rendezvous.

Kevin had all the details at that link, and I agree – Paypal is way over the line here. The problem is, how do we address the issue? They’re pretty much the only game in town in the online money transfer business, so how do we hurt them in the wallet?

Monster Hunter International review

First off, I promise I won’t drop any serious spoilers in here, so it’ll be safe for you to read this review, and the book will stay intact.  The second plug is to make sure you tune in to Gun Nuts Radio on Tuesday, because the author of MHI will be appearing live on the show to talk about the book, his background, and 3-gun!

With that out of the way, let’s talk about the book itself for a second.  I downloaded it my iPhone’s Stanza app on Tuesday, and I finished reading it last night.  I read this book whenever I had a chance, which meant I spent a bit more time reading it when I should have been making phone calls to vendors and prospective customers, but whatever.  Clearly, I enjoyed the book, but I couldn’t quite figure out why, because I’ve never been a big fan of fantasy fiction.  Vamps and werewolves were never really my cup of tea, but you know what is?  Interesting characters and well written action scenes.

That’s the strength of this book – the characters, while in some cases a little cartoony, are believable in their roles; and most importantly the action is well scripted.  To draw a comparison that I’m sure some of my readers will get, remember the BattleTech novels authored by Michael Stackpole?  How his writing would put in the cockpit, and you could feel the heat Kai Allard-Liao’s Centurion as it struggled against other ‘mechs?  It’s like that.  Because of Larry’s background in 3-gun competition, he “gets” how to write the sort of one-sided gunfight you’d be having when your foes don’t shoot back (they just try to eat you).

I give Monster Hunter International an enthusiastic “two trigger fingers up” for bitchin’ fantasy action and non-stop vampire murder.  Seriously, if you’re tired of sissified candy-ass vampires, and you want to see some old school vampire killing with heavy artillery, this book is right up your alley.  When they shell vamps with an 81mm mortar…well, I’ve said too much now.

Gun Nuts: Camp Perry show!

We had an excellent show last on Camp Perry, featuring Lars from NRABlog.com,  Texas State Highpower Rifle champion Robert from Blackfork, and friend of the show Heath – who had the range facilities set up to let Breda shoot an M1 Carbine for the first time.  You can check out all of last night’s show here, or click here to download an .mp3 file of the Camp Perry show.

Next week’s show is going to be great – we’re continuing the $5 New Caller drive – for each new caller that’s never called in before, I’m going to donate $5 to NRA-ILA to help our fight for our right to keep and bear arms.  Next week’s show is going to feature special guest Larry Correia, author of Monster Hunter International – which is currently screaming up the charts at Amazon.com.

As usual, the show is available on iTunes – you can subscribe going to the iTunes store and searching for “Gun Nuts Radio”, or by following this link to subscribe to our raw RSS feed.  Join us next week at 9pm Eastern time for a live review of the new Daniel Defense DDXV carbine, and to talk to Larry Correia, author of Monster Hunter International!

The DDXV is here

Picked up the DDXV from Beech Grove Firearms yesterday. I’ll get it out to the range this weekend to run it through it’s paces, and then we’ll do a full review on the blog next week as well as live, on air coverage on Gun Nuts Radio. In the meantime, here are a couple of quick snaps I grabbed with my iPhone. Don’t worry, the good camera will come out for the actual shooting.

Drawing aggro

Serious question to you guys – everyone knows that I have a 9mm 1911 that I love to death, and in my search for a “gun buy” that makes logical sense, I want a duplicate gun.  This follows rationally along the 2 is 1 and 1 is none school of thought, and also helps keep cost down since I have holsters, mag holders, etc for a single stack 9mm 1911.  Anyway, here’s the part where I draw aggro from 1911 fanboys:

From Gun Nuts: The Next Generation

I have the opportunity to buy the gun pictured. But if I do, I’m going to have it modified with Novak rear sights, a fiber optic front sight, skeletonized speed trigger, beavertail grip safety, etc. Yes, it’s a pre-70 series Colt Commander, but in the configuration as pictured, it’s nothing more than a blank slate on which to create a gun.

My other option is to simply buy another Para LTC in 9mm from the factory, which already comes in the configuration I’d want it in, save it lacks the fiber optic front sight, which is remedied easily enough. Thoughts? Hate mail?

Blackhawk SERPA Quick Disconnect system

Our friends at Blackhawk have officially launched the SERPA Quick Disconnect system, which allows your holster to be safely moved and transported to and from various locations.  Initially designed for the military to be able to move a drop leg holster up to a chest mount in a hurry without having to handle the firearm, there are plenty of applications for the civilian as well.

For example, it would be simplicity itself to mount one of the pieces on a wood plank, and secure that plank to the underside of a desk or dresser, allowing you secure but rapid access to a pistol for HD situations.  The “easy on, easy off” nature of the quick release situation means that you can have one gun, and one holster for multiple carry positions.

There are even applications to the practical shooting sports, as with the “quick release” and 360 angles, your Single Stack holster can be rapidly converted to a Limited Holster by changing the cant to allow for faster access.  The Quick Disconnect system is compatible with both the SERPA lock holsters, and the injection modeled CQC holsters, which are dimensionally the same as the SERPA holsters, but lack the locking mechanism.

Gun Nuts Tonight: Camp Perry

That’s right guys – tonight on Gun Nuts Radio at 9pm we’re going to be talking some Camp Perry, in addition to our news roundup and info session.  We’ll be joined by the Texas Highpower champion, as well as special guests from NRA, so don’t miss out on the show this week.

We go live as usual at 9pm Eastern time at www.blogtalkradio.com/gunnuts – and we want to hear from you!  New rule – for every new caller that has never called in before on the show, I’m going to donate $5 to NRA-ILA to help preserve our right to keep and bear arms.  So join tonight’s show and help keep us shooting for years to come!  The call in numbe is the same as it’s always been: 347-539-5436!  Tonight at 9pm Eastern, Gun Nuts Radio – The Next Generation of Shooting Sports is here.
