I have been absent from youtube for some time, and absent from Gun Nuts for even longer. I’ll spare ya’ll the boring details, but this image is a big part of why I was gone:

But anyway, enough of that. Today I wanted to talk about an interesting revelation I had while I was taking breaks from doing mountains of paperwork in my office. A friend of mine linked to an old, and I do mean old youtube video of mine where I’m shooting a Glock, and it sort of got me thinking about “what guns do I shoot the best?”

As I’ve mentioned in the past, I’m a huge believer in WML for defensive handguns, especially guns that are going to be used for home defense. In today’s video, I spend some time on the range working on manipulating the light in the dark and incorporating challenging into my training.

Rock Island Armory/Armscor Tac Ultra Fullsize 1911 final review

Final score: 81/100
-10 points for failing the 10-8 Performance Test, -5 points for the extractor being out of tension from the factory, and -4 points for the 4 failures it had that weren’t ammo related.

As an interesting side note, of the 2001 rounds fired, over 1200 were CapArms Superior Range Ammo in .45 ACP, which experienced zero failures of any type. Interesting.

The Gun Nuts Handgun Evaluation Protocol

As I wrap up a year of testing 1911s and get back to testing all manner of guns, I realized I needed a replacement for the 10-8 Performance 1911 Test. The 10-8 Performance Test is designed to test the extraction and primary function of the 1911 to ensure it’s suitable for duty. I was specifically cautioned by the dudes at 10-8 that it wasn’t for modern semi-autos, so I wanted to come up with my own protocol for “modern” defensive pistols. I’m never going to be one of those people who gets up on a drum and preaches that the world is going to hell in a handbasket, because as bad as things are, they could be a lot worse.

That being said, I did just buy a set of plates and a plate carrier. I mean…it’s not a bad idea to have one, right? Especially if you’re going to take a carbine class and maybe you don’t trust the guy loading his rifle to not have an ND into your upper spine?
