Shooting Saturday – April 21st

This was a great day at the range, the weather was great, the wind was calm – all in all a fantastic day to shoot.

I headed out to Eagle Creek Park Pistol Range with my Ruger GP100, my “new-to-me” Taurus Pt-92, the EAA Bounty Hunter .22 WMR, and my beloved Marlin 25M .22 WMR. I was going to enter the EAA and the Ruger in Mr. Completely’s E-Postal match for April. The Taurus Pt92 was going to be function tested with Winchester 115 grain ball, and MagTech Gold 124 grain JHP. Finally, I’ve realized that while I’m a better than fair shot with a pistol, I come up short in the rifleman category, so I wanted to do some work with Marlin. Despite having had it for almost a decade now, I’d never worked it out past about 30 yards – probably because it’s never worn anything other than the somewhat..rudimentary iron sights.

GP100
Well, the GP100 was pretty boring, I was shooting more Magtech 125 FMJ rounds. Pretty much par for the course as usual. So reliable it’s almost boring. Here’s the target I shot for the postal match.

I’m pretty happy with that, it could be better – but for fixed sights and double action only it wasn’t too bad.

Taurus PT92
For those that remember, the Taurus was my BAG day purchase, coming with five 17 round magazines. The exterior is pretty beat up – however the gun runs like a swiss watch. It easily digested the Winchester ball and the Magtech HPs, without even so much as a hiccup. Yes, the exterior is pretty janky, however the gun itself seems fine. I’m going to detail strip and clean it tomorrow just to be sure.

EAA Bounty Hunger
Another gun that I love. I brought the EAA with the .22 Magnum cylinder to shoot it for the postal match – I shot the dickens out of it. For whatever reason, that gun felt just right today. Here’s the target.

Like I said, everything just felt right, with the possible exception of that seven I threw. I’ll know I’m back in competitive form when I start pissing and moaning about shooting eights, but until then sevens are pretty bad.

Marlin 25M
The last gun I shot was the Marlin 25M, .22 Magnum. In thinking back, I realized that I never shot this gun beyond 30 yards really, whether plinking or varmints. So, today I took it out, fired a few at 25 yards to get the point of aim – and then realized that there might be a problem. Everything was hitting high, so I cranked the rear sight up until it was about 2 clicks from the highest position, to try and bring the rounds down. It worked for 25 yards, but once I was out to 50, I had to hold about 8 inches low and 3 inches to the left with the sights up to max to hit the target. That much Kentucky Windage is 2 things, A) frustrating, and B) rather limiting on the rifle – unless I’m shooting at a 16 inch wide target. The targets I had were 8 inches – so I guess at 50 yards I’d just a bigger target.

So, after running the target back to 25 yards, I shot a little rapid fire with the rifle for fun, then I shot one last five shot group to close the day.

That’s the right way to end a day at the range.

Ghost ship

Ghost Ship found off the coast of Australia. Table set with food, GPS functional, engine running…no crew. That’s rather odd.

It’s not really unusual to find abandoned vessels, but as a general rule the tables aren’t set with food and the ship usually isn’t in fully functional condition. While one of the sails on the vessel was shredded, the engine was fine and running. The weirdest part (for me anyway) is that the table was set, and the bloody GPS was working.

Generally, if you’re off in a bad way at sea, you don’t set the table for a nice sit down dinner. Weird. I’d really like to see the full reports on this.

My dad’s gun

No Wisdom of the Duke today – I think that plenty has been said in the blogsphere about responsibility, ethics, and gun control in the last few days. Today’s Friday Special is about one of my Dad’s guns, and one that every time I go visit I try to con him into letting it leave with me.

My dad first joined the LA County Sheriff’s Department during the days when cops still carried wheelguns. I’m not entirely sure what that the lineage on this particular revolver is, but here is what I do know about it. It’s a .357 Magnum with a 6 inch barrel, custom trigger job, etc. That in itself isn’t weird, but this is. It’s a Ruger Security-Six with a Colt barrel. That’s weird. I’ve never been able to extract exactly where (or who) he got it from, but every time I’m in Washington I try to come up with a new way to have this gun land in my hands.

You see, it’s the finest shooting .357 I’ve ever held. It balances well, points well, the trigger is crisp and smooth in double action, and it breaks like a glass rod in single action. Did I mention that it shoots like there’s no tomorrow? Because it does. I fired my very first full house magnum rounds through this gun – it was solely responsible for getting me Hooked on Magnums, usually of the .357 variety. That was fun. We were at the range, and had been shooting some .38 Specials through it, but we ran out of ammo. So I went and grabbed up a box of PMC 158 grain .357 rounds. My first shot went ka-BOOM and the gun torqued in my hand. I was two things, 1) rather surprised and 2) happier than a swine in shit. Dad then had me do some rapid fire drills on a “charging” target with the magnum. With a 6 inch barrel, great grips and an awesome trigger, shooting rapid fire was pleasant.

One of these days, I’m going to get this gun from him…just you wait. Actually, I’m flying out there for Christmas this year, I’ll try to get out to the range with it and get some pictures so you can see precisely what I’m talking about. If anyone knows anything about Ruger Security Six with a 6 inch Colt barrel made in California sometime in the late 70’s early 80’s, let me know.

Man, that is a cool gun.

Alec Baldwin is f*cking nuts

Is it Christmas or something? First I get my own troll, and now this? Awesome.

Alec Baldwin left a violently angry voicemail for his 12 year old daughter yesterday, calling her among other things “a pig” and saying that she had “embarrassed him for the last time”.

“I don’t give a damn that you’re 12 years old, or 11 years old, or that you’re a child, or that your mother is a thoughtless pain in the ass who doesn’t care about what you do as far as I’m concerned. You have humiliated me for the last time with this phone.”

The full audio of the call is here, at Youtube. I love this. This guy is to the Prince of the MoonBat Hollywood Liberals. I’ve always thought he was a huge jerkoff, but this only confirms it. This is the best day ever.

I’m so happy!

I got my first troll sometime last night. The best part is that he’s not an intellectual troll or anything like that, he’s a conspiracy theorist! I couldn’t be happier – since I’m still kind of a “new” blog in the conservative world I really feel like this is one of the bigger moments for me.

Thanks to My Four Readers for everything you’ve done, I wouldn’t be here without you. I’m so happy. A batshit fucking loco conspiracy theorist! Not someone with valid opinions, so I can take whatever potshots I want!

This is awesome. I hope he stays.

How much is enough?

Uncle asks an interesting question over there. The question is if you and one anti-gunner were given the opportunity to sit down and re-write all of the nations gun laws, where you would compromise? In what areas would you be willing to give a little to get a little?

So, here’s my stab at a total re-working of the federal firearms laws.

Possession, Purchase, and Carrying

The current demographic of people who are forbidden from owning firearms (mentally ill, convicted felons, dishonorable punts from the military, etc) would be maintained, however I’d establish a federal provision for non-violent felons to regain their right to own weapons. Emphasis on non-violent. In order to gain that concession, I’d be willing to accept that new manufactured guns must be shipped with a trigger lock, either external or internal as part of federal law.

The minimum age to own guns would remain the same, 18 for rifles/shotguns 21 for handguns. To purchase any sort of firearm the end user would still have to pass an NICS check. The NICS system itself would be streamlined in our modern information age with additional information on disqualifying misdemeanors – states databases would automatically uplink information to NICS on a continuous basis which (in theory) would provide more comprehensive coverage of the NICS system.

The next thing I’d pass would be nationwide reciprocity for CCW holders, which would be tricky due to the varying standards from state to state w/regards to concealed carry. The standard for a state to be included in the National Reciprocity act would be that each carry holder has to perform all of the following: A) Pass a thorough criminal & mental background check, B) take and pass a 2-day firearms course which covers everything from safe gunhandling to “shoot-no-shoot” scenarios (licensed by the state), and C) agree to take a certified shooting class every four years to maintain their permit.

Class III and NFA Weapons

I’d largely leave this untouched, it’s great political capital to “ban machine guns”, honestly this is a section I’d be willing to trade for concessions elsewhere.

Curious & Relics

Another section I’d leave alone – I’d especially try to portray C&R guns as “rifles from WWII” and “old revolvers”.

.50 Caliber rifles

This is a big one. I thought about this a lot, and I came to the conclusion that I’d be willing to see .50 cal rifles (as much as I love them) reclassified as NFA weapons, especially if it allowed me to push my national CCW reciprocity legislation through. However, the language would have to be clearly written so as to not outlaw .50 cal pistols or muzzleloaders, it would only re-class .50 BMG rifles as NFA weapons.

Assault Weapons

On principle, I’d be opposed to a ban on “scary looking guns”. It’s not something I’d be willing to trade, at the most I’d say that we could get rid of guns with bayonet lugs. Because a lot of people get bayoneted these days.

Those are the only sections that I’ve put any sort of constructive thought into, so I’ll play the cheap card and say I’d leave the rest unchanged. I would like to get rid of the ATF though.
