BAG Day

Buy a Gun (BAG) Day is coming up in a few short weeks.  Put that tax money to valuable use by purchasing a firearm; this year I’m strongly recommending that people get black rifles.  Barring that, get a semi-auto pistol and loads of hi-cap magazines.  Last year, my BAG Day was quite successful, I walked out of Gander Mtn. in Indianapolis with a Taurus PT92 (which I love) and 5 17 round magazines for it.

Start planning your BAG Day, because if you’re like me (read: married) you’ll probably need to do some begging.

Ammo Accountability

Thanks to Sebastian, I’m listening to the interview with Russ Ford from Ammunition Coding Systems, the company that’s behind Ammunition Accountability, which is lobbying to pass legislation that would make ACS’s technology mandatory on all ammo.

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

Part 4

Part 5

Now, Cam essentially feeds this guy his own head in the interview; but what disturbs me is how cavalier Russ Ford comes off in the whole thing. His attitude during the duration of the interview is basically “I don’t care about ammo manufacturers, it’s up to them to figure out how to enact this untested technology and they have to bear the cost as well”.

My favorite part is when Cam said that “no one has an obligation to help you with an idea they think is stupid”; this was in response to Russ saying that he’d received no help from ammo companies to do R&D work for him. Cam’s point, that he keeps coming back to is that Russ never says how this could be successfully integrated into modern manufacturing processes, and has no points to refute all the experts from Remington, SAAMI, and others saying that it’s impossible to implement.

I really don’t like that at the end of the interview, Russ plays the “I’m a shooter like you” card; for some reason that really rubs me the wrong way. Also, I should point out that the links that Russ said they were going to put on the Ammunition Accountability site so that people know it’s part of ACS aren’t up there.

The link to Snowflakes in Hell has all five parts of the interview on Youtube. If you haven’t listened to, listen to the whole thing. It’s actually quite important.

Ah, hypocrisy

As you know, eBay is really anti-gun.  Their response to VA Tech was to ban the sale of gun parts, and they won’t sell some things that even just look like guns.  Their justification for all this is that they don’t want to contribute to crime or something.

Of course, they’re fine with selling switchblades.  Like Uncle says, that’s odd because shipping switchblades interstate is illegal at the federal level.  So, according to eBay policy, the legal transactions of firearms through an FFL are a no-no, but the illegal shipping of switchblades across state lines is fine.

Makes perfect sense.

A handy primer

“How to get in trouble with BATFE” was the alternate title, but that was a little long.  However, it’s pretty easy to run afoul of ATF regs without realizing it.  So, here’s how to get in serious hot water with BATFE, and not even realize it.

Step 1: Buy one of these.

Step 2: Buy this attachable stock and attach it.

Step 3: Decide that reloading all that loose ball and powder business is a pain, and fit your little (legal) BP carbine with an R&D Conversion Cylinder.

Congratulations, you’ve just created an unregistered NFA weapon, a Short Barrelled Rifle.  In the eyes of BATFE, your home made carbine is no different semi-auto SBR.

I don’t want anyone to think that I’m advocating breaking the law; what I wanted to do was demonstrate how easy it could be to run afoul of BATFE regulations on certain issues.  In this case, by installing the conversion cylinder, you’ve created a firearm, and since it’s got a shoulder stock and short barrel, it would qualify as an NFA gun and thusly be subject to all the accompying laws.

This is especially true for the home gunsmith – always be aware of the law.  I may not agree with the BATFE rules on all the issues, but they are the law.  Which is oddly enough how I found out about the above example, since I was planning on doing that as a project gun.  I may still do it and leave it in its BP configuration, which would still be legal.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse, even if the law is dumb.

Airplane porn

A discussion got me thinking about airplanes again, and I went and did some digging.  I wanted to find some pictures of an Unlimited Class Racer with contra-rotating propellers.  Because I am a kind soul, I shall share my bounty with you.  Meet Precious Metal:

Click to embiggen.  Looks just as good sitting on the ground as it does in the air.  Man, I really need to get back to Reno.

Talk about hits to your credibility

You should probably realize that your credibility has been completely torpedoed when Sinbad (the comedian) is taking potshots at you.  I mean really, the only thing worse than that would be having Carrot Top make fun of you.  If that happens, then you should probably just kill yourself.

Hillary lied about the whole landing under sniper fire in Bosnia thing, and the best part is that Sinbad was on that same trip with her.

In her Iowa stump speech, Clinton also said, “We used to say in the White House that if a place is too dangerous, too small or too poor, send the First Lady.”

Say what? As Sinbad put it: “What kind of president would say, ‘Hey, man, I can’t go ’cause I might get shot so I’m going to send my wife…oh, and take a guitar player and a comedian with you.'”

That’s pretty funny right there.  But it does serve to illustrate an excellent point, that being that Hillary seems to be willing to do anything, absolutely anything to win this election.  It’s just galling the levels that that woman seems to be completely accepting of stooping to so she can get the nomination.

My problem is that a part of me almost wants her to win, because I firmly believe that McCain would absolutely clean her clock in the general.  At the same time, she’s demonstrated herself to be so utterly without class and dignity of any kind that every time she loses, every time she gets caught in a lie, I get a little perverse enjoyment out of it.  It’s not mature by any standards, but it’s an accurate representation of how I feel on this issue.

Red Sox open Season with Win

At the ungodly hour of 3am Pacific Time, the Red Sox kicked off the 2008 Major League Baseball Season in Tokyo, Japan against the Oakland A’s.  And what an opening game it was, going to 10 innings to be won by Manny on a double, which he seemed to think was going to leave the park.

I like that MLB had the Sox open the season in Japan, I like that they’re trying to do more to play to the world wide appeal of baseball.  Secretly, I hope that one day my kids or grandkids will talk about major league teams from all over the world, about having the Sox travel to Japan or Mexico to play professional teams in those areas.

I’m not going to stay up until 3am to watch the Sox, so I’ll have to catch highlights on SportsCenter again like I did for this game, but congrats on the win guys.  Keep it up.

It’s called “lying”

Camp Hillary is claiming that she “misspoke” about running from sniper fire during a visit to Bosnia.

She said when she arrived in Bosnia on March 25, 1996, “I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base.”

But news video footage of her arrival at Tuzla shows Clinton, then the first lady, calmly walking from the rear ramp of a U.S. Air Force C-17 transport plane with her daughter, Chelsea, then 16, at her side. Both Clintons held their heads up and did not appear rushed as they walked toward the group waiting on the tarmac to welcome them.

She then said in a later interview that she “misspoke” and that since she says so much stuff a day it’s a totally innocent mistake.  My problem with that is that it’s not an innocent mistake, because running from sniper fire is something that you would quite clearly remember.

In the context in which Hillary is using the phrase, “misspeak” would mean “To speak mistakenly, inappropriately, or rashly“; on the other hand the word “lie” would mean “to make an untrue statement with intent to deceive” or “to create a false or misleading impression“.

Since Hillary was using her “memory” of running from sniper fire in Bosnia to establish her chops as Commander-in-Chief that it really would fall into the “lie” category, specifically definition number two, the whole “false or misleading impression”.  Ask anyone who has ever been shot at, and they’ll tell you that it’s not really something you forget about misspeak about later in life.  It stays with you.

I guess I’m kind of shocked at the audacity of this particular lie; I mean did she not think that there was video of her arrival in Bosnia which showed that she never ran from snipers?
