1. Depends what you are attempting to do of course. Some things are easily and safely done, others are not; we all have different levels of skill and ability to learn and accomplish tasks. What sort of danger could be presented by your making a mistake is what is important to ask. If injury or death could result if you make a mistake, then Yes, seek out a competent Gunsmith.

  2. Yes, many things to take into account. But if in doubt?. I have gunsmithed many of my own over the years because I used to be a gunsmith moonlighter after my other vocation. Dont risk yourself or even damage that which may not be repairable. Not gunsmithing, but I warned a guy once about his too hot reloads in his pistol that cost him teeth and facial reconstruction.
