Let’s Shoot: Single Stack Nationals

It’s 5:21 AM as I write this. I’ve gotten up quite early so I can feed my coffee addiction before making the 52 minute drive from my hotel to Pasa Park range, home of USPSA Single Stack Nationals. I’ve prepped my gear, checked all my equipment twice, packed and checked my range bag, walked the stages yesterday – I have done everything I can to prepare.

I’m in Squad 13, starting on Stage 1. This match has a ton of tests of true shooting skill, with long, tight shots on hardcover targets, no shoots everywhere, and plenty of partial targets. There aren’t a lot of movers, but the ones that are here are pretty devious.

I’m not going to tell you that I don’t care how I finish, because I’m not going to lie to you guys. I hate it when people say “I don’t care how I finish, I just want to run/shoot/fish/whatever well.” Screw that, I want to win. I want to win my class, and I want to finish in the Top 25. Will I? I have no idea. There are some really good shooters here in my class, and the top 25 is a pretty ambitious goal for my first year here. That’s cool. Ambition is good, because without ambition I’d still be stuck in utter misery, slinging insurance in Indiana.

Now I travel all over the country, writing articles and shooting guns. Let’s go burn this match down.

  1. I wish I was in your position. I’m reading this probably as your finishing up or even sitting drinking a beer and finding out how you shot today. But the feeling you get the morning of a big match is amazing! I’ll never forget the first sanctioned IDPA match I went to in Colorado. Such great times and even without a win it really is life at its best.

  2. Looks like you where 7th B class and 63 overall. A pretty decent finish for a challenging match.
