How to not get killed. I forget which comedian said “no one ever took $400 out of an ATM at 3 am to do something legal”, but the point is the same – if you avoid situations and people that are statistical “high risks” for violence, you will ameliorate the odds of getting into a violent encounter.

Enh – I took almost $500 out of an ATM in Manhattan once to do something entirely legal – walk across the street and into a computer store to buy a hard drive at a point at which I had no credit card. (This was prior to credit-card style debit cards and the store didn’t take straight debit cards). This was also at right around bank-closing (I had to evade the $300/day transaction limit that was in place at the time), in the financial district.
Nonetheless, a stupid thing to do in retrospect. (Probably spending that much money on a hard drive was as well, but this was 1993, so no internet as we know it, and I wanted to dual-boot Linux…)
I took 400 dollars out of an ATM to get a hotel room after my pickup from the airport fell through (unscheduled birth of his child).
At the time I looked aggressive in a Unibomber kind of way…
Since ChiTown has a lot of late night eats and bars, some of which have exorbitant bar fees, it isn’t uncommon to pull a couple hundert out to cover a good seriously good time…
I usually look marsh in a mellow kind of way…
I totally agree with Tam, tho – I’m not driving to the sou’ side to hit up some soul food at 3AM…
I take out 350 dollars every month to pay some bills, as I work from 3 PM to 11:30 PM it often after midnight when I do it. I keep my situational awareness vary high, never put the car in park (in case I need to make a quick getaway)
