You might have heard some rumors about possible 3-gun rules being released by IDPA for use at club level matches as a way to “beta-test” a new competitive category. Unfortunately, there isn’t any official info from IDPA on this yet, however I’m trying to reach out to my contacts and see if we can’t 1) squeeze some information, and 2) get an interview with someone who would know.
Anyone who reads Gun Nuts knows I’m a die-hard IDPA guy – the potential for the addition of a multi-gun competition in my favorite pistol sport is something that’s too interesting for me to pass up. As soon as I have more information, you’ll have it.
What kind of cover garment would do you use for 3-gun?
I would love to see this come true as IDPA is also my game of choice. Oh course, it would mean I would have to get a shot gun…oh darn. 馃檪
Strange. It seems to go against IDPA’s modus operandi. Still interesting.
I mean, right now when shooting IDPA, you basically have to use off-the-shelf guns and gear. That makes sense given their mission statement. How is that gonna work for rifles/carbines? I don’t know that I’ve ever seen an “off-the-shelf” AR… I’m not sure such a beast exists. How to you limit long-gun configurations to fit within the same parameters as their current limitations on handguns? The only thing I can think of is a limit on optics/doodads.
I can definitely see 3-gun IDPA-style COFs being sweet though. Unfortunately, some of the nearby ranges that host IDPA matches here would not be suitable for 3-gun.
I have helped run some IDPA multi gun matches. They have been having them for about 2 years.

The IDPA really needs this. Membership, from what I’ve been reading, has stagnated over the past several years. Many of the rules are rooted in restrictions of the AWB, and haven’t been updated with the times. Adopting this idea can only be good for the game. Oddly, the gunfighters I know would likely have the guns they’ve taken to war wouldn’t be within the rules most of the time.
