This is why I like FN Herstal

I have probably mentioned in the past that I like FN Herstal a lot more than I like HK.  Not just because they make better guns (take THAT, fanboys) but because FN loves the civilian market.

As a compare and contrast, HK said that they won’t make their HK-416 in a civilian legal version.  Meanwhile, FNH has decided that they will sell their SCAR weapons system to civilians.

SCAR 16S and SCAR 17S As close to USSOCOM as you can get without enlisting.

Experience the civilian-legal semi-auto only version of the rifle chosen by U.S. Special Operations Command as its first new rifle since the early 1960’s. The SCAR 16S is chambered in 5.56X45mm NATO (223 Rem.) while the SCAR 17S fires the 7.62X51mm NATO (308 Win.) cartridge. The innovative gas-operated, short stroke piston system reduces fouling for greater reliability. The side folding polymer stock is fully adjustable for comb height and length of pull and is colored authentic USSOCOM Flat Dark Earth. Both 10 and 30-round detachable box magazines(DBM) are available, and the ambidextrous operating controls instantly adapt the SCAR S-Series to any user.

Of course, good luck finding someone who actually has one in stock.  With the way EBRs are flying off the shelves these days, actually finding these guns isn’t going to be easy.

  1. I can see if I can get you a seller, if you want.

My dad has a lot of connections with firearms traders and sellers in the Midwest. He may be able to give me a lead on where to look or buy one.

  2. I’d wait until they were on the market a year before I ran out and bought one.

And they may not be on the market a year.

  3. Very true. On the bright side, they take STANAG mags, so that stockpile of M16 magazines I have will finally come in handy.

Really though, a lot of comes down to the fact that FN likes the civilian market; unlike their competition, and that means a lot to me.

  4. Sorry, mang. Even my dad who regularly finds something that’s sold out on the market couldn’t come up with on. Apparently, the people buying them are doing it clearly for ownership, and not resale for big bucks.

Which reinforces your opinion that they are truly a popular and decent weapon to own.

  5. No love for the PS-90? I admit it’s an anti-chipmunk weapons system, and the magazine is rather unique, but… has anyone picked one up? Cutest rifle ever made. If I had one, I’d stick little googly eyes on it.

FN stuff must be in great demand, because anything they offer sells for top dollar around here. It may also have something to do with the fact that prices never recovered from their AWB levels–a work-alike law is still in effect in Connecticut. When the choice is either a worn-out, pre-ban Colt AR that is named specifically in the ban, or a new rifle not yet identified as an EBR, I know which I would choose.

  6. McClaud,

Your dad couldn’t find one because they aren’t for sale yet.

    TJP,

Once I got a good look at the guts of the PS-90, I decided that it was a wretched pulsating ball of f^%&. Slow reloads, almost impossible to chamber-check, lousy trigger, wretched BUIS, plastic lockwork. Blech.

  7. Tam –

    That would explain it.

That would also explain my dad asking me if I was sure they were out there yet, since it was news to him that they were going to sell them so soon.

Reading comprehension – I did not has it.

But the very mention of this entry got my dad looking at Hab’s blog, so either way it was win/win.
