Here’s a psychiatrist’s view on where that anger and other issues stem from:
http://www.jpfo.org/filegen-n-z/ragingagainstselfdefense.htm
I’ve read that JPFO brief and much of it makes a lot of sense.
I think the anger is based upon both denial and desire for control.
The denial comes from the weaker minded. They don’t like to be reminded that life can be dangerous, can involve risks, and that there are bad people out there who are prone to perpetrating evil.
People advocating self defense offends their effort to deny that self defense is necessary in this world. These also tend to be the same people who despise motorcycles, advocate seat-belt laws, smoking bans and mandated airbags, etc etc etc. It’s not so much that they CARE about whether we’re safe. It’s all because the very THOUGHT of the dangers of life or the need to provide for self-defense scares them…so it makes them angry.
Those with the statist mindset (and they can be either liberal or conservative) have a strong desire for control over others. What you can eat, what you can smoke, what substances you can put in your body, what you can do in the privacy of your own bedroom, with whom and with the aid of what mechanical, visual or stimulative aids, what color you can paint your house, what kind of business you can conduct and with whom…it goes on and on and on and on.
Gun ownership…especially gun ownership for the purposes of self-defense…pisses them off because it symbolizes individualism and independence from the ever-present “assistance” of the state.
