The doctrine cannot be wrong

The sort of cognitive dissonance demonstrated by the English government in this article is simply shocking.  The gist of it is that the Brits want to push the kind of restrictive gun control they have in their country onto the rest of the EU, and use the tragedy in Finland as a launching platform for their agenda.

A British MEP is hoping to “fast track” a new EU deal on gun control and says last week’s school massacre in Finland should act as a wake up call.

The problem of course is that the gun control measures in England have done precisely nothing to actually combat crime, and the argument could be made that things have gotten worse.

Ms McCarthy, who represents the North West Region, said: “In the wake of the Dunblane tragedy the UK toughened its gun law and we banned all handguns.

Not to pick squares Ms. McCarthy, but how exactly is that working out for you?  Luckily for me, the article itself answered this question for me in the last section.

She has been working closely with Greater Manchester Police, who highlighted the problem to her after busting two separate gangs who were importing imitation guns from Lithuania and Germany.

One gang converted them before bringing them into the country while the other imported them and then paid a corrupt engineer to carry out the conversion work in Manchester.

The police eventually caught the gang – who were jailed for up to 19 years in November last year – but many of the guns remain in circulation.

So…what you’re saying is that despite the fact that smuggling replicas into England is already illegal, and converting a replica firearm to a functional firearm is also illegal, you’ve decided that the best solution is to pass even more laws.  To steal an Uncleism, you’re basically saying “Let’s make it illegaler”.

This would be funny if it wasn’t so sad.  The British government needs to wake up and realize that their gun control laws have been a miserable failure – spreading the failure to the rest of the EU isn’t going to help.

  1. Politicians think that the only answer to any problem is to make new laws outlawing something, anything, that will make it seem as if they are on the case – solving society’s problems. What a crock. While the “little people” are left defenseless, they have their bodyguards. Another crock.
