Pick your Candidate

Kind of a cool pseudo-meme found here – you answer 11 questions about hot-button issues and then you get matched with the candidates that match your position.  It’s worth noting that Gun Control was not one of the topics available.

For my two top matches, it gave me Rudy G. in the number 1 spot, and John McCain in the number 2 spot.  I think a big reason for that is because it didn’t have gun control as an issue, and I’m a lot more moderate than most people think.

As a “for example”, let’s take a look at the issue of abortion.  I am opposed to abortion, as I cannot get around the simple fact that you are killing a person.  However, I accept that abortion is legalized in the United States, and that it is a procedure that is going to be sought out legal or otherwise.  As such, I would prefer that it remain legal, so that it can be regulated like any medical procedure.

Another “conservative” issue that I oft disagree with the right on is the issue of gay marriage.  The next person who says to me that there should be a Constitutional Amendment against gay marriage is going to get punched in the face.  I really, really, really don’t care if gay people want to get married, and I’m not really concerned with defending “the sanctity of marriage”.  The only marriage that is sacred as far as I am concerned is my marriage to my wife.

There you see a small slice of my politics – I vote Republican because I’m a Libertarian, and (usually) the Republican party comes the closest to espousing my positions on (most of) the issues.

  1. Fred!!! Oh, and lighten up, Francis, about punching out gay marriage opponents. They’re probably packing too!

  2. It’s not that I’m mad about it, but I’m tired of it (the gay marriage stuff). It’s a foolish issue that detracts from much more important issues that should be dealt with.

  3. With the advent of civil unions and popular cohabitation, marriage is fairly pointless. Now, let’s tear down the child support system!

However, I also like to take the States RIghts cop-out and say that a state can pass any law it pleases as long as it is in keeping with the federal Constitution.

My first match was John McCain followed by Fred Thompson. And here I was hoping for a Thompson-McCain ticket.

  4. Apparently my top two are McCain, followed by Thompson. Eww. Thompson I guess I’m okay with, but McCain spent too much time sucking up to the media and grandstanding with Democrats in congress for me to trust what he says on anything.

  5. Dodd, then Gravel, then Kuchinich, all within four points of one another. then a larger gap to Obama. figures; all the people who think like me are so damn obscure in this country, i’d never even heard of the one supposedly best fit to my opinions.

  6. Thompson and Hunter, but no values particularly high.

As for gay marriage, I always figured a gay marriage amendment would, at worst, get the GLT faction to stop scaring the normals and actually focus on rights and important stuff, rather than trying to get a permission slip from the government that the same government would make meaningless. It couldn’t go much worse than the current strategy.

    To each their own.

  7. I tried to try out the questionnaire but the gremlins is the gears prevented that.

As a libertarian who has reregistered Republican in order to more fully support Ron Paul I do want to ask (politely) about your closing statement:

“There you see a small slice of my politics – I vote Republican because I’m a Libertarian, and (usually) the Republican party comes the closest to espousing my positions on (most of) the issues.”

If the Republican party comes closest to espousing your positions wouldn’t that make you a Republican (and as Jon Stewart would say – “Not that there is anything wrong with that.”) and not a Libertarian?

  8. Thompson, Tancredo and Guliani. What a mix.

T.E. – Not really. As a Libertarian, when looking at the two dominant parties, you’d look for the one that agrees with your position the most. From what Ahab wrote, that would be the Republicans.

  9. Yeah, that’s sort of what I was getting at. I should have phrased it “as a Libertarian, the Republican party espouses my beliefs more often than the Democrat party, hence why I usually vote Republican”.

  10. McCain, Thompson, Hunter. McCain is out because of CFR and his dem voting record. His responses and my responses may coincide to some degree, but I don’t lie and he must have.

In the order I set them is Thompson, Huckabee, Hunter.

Oh joy, another ‘personally opposed.’ Not only do say that you consider it killing, but you claim to support a Consitution that explicitly recognizes the Rights of the innocent. I have to say that somone who so easiles abandons the most vulnerable part of the People (“its already legal, so lets regulate it” is as piss-poor excuse as I’ve ever heard) can never be trusted not to abandon the rest of them.

Pissing on one Right is the the same as pissing on them all.
