Gun Nuts Radio Tonight

Have yourself a gunny little Christmas, may your mags be full…from now on our switch is set to rock and roll!  I apologize for that wretched musical interlude, however I did want to let you know that we are on for Gun Nuts Radio tonight at 9pm Eastern time.  The topic for tonight’s show is going to be Christmas: the 12 days of gun nut Christmas.  Breda and I will each be presenting our “top 10 gift ideas” list tonight live at 9pm at www.blogtalkradio.com/gunnuts.  Additionally, we’ll spend a bit of the show talking about this morning’s appearance on Fox News opposite Dennis Henigan from the Brady Campaign.

Be there tonight at 9pm Eastern time at www.blogtalkradio.com/gunnuts!

Riddle me this, Batman

Herald Times stated that their database had nothing to do with gun control, right?  Then how come their gun permit database is being defended by a lobbyist for the number 1 gun control organization in America?  Aside from the fact that the HTO is afraid of taking the debate on the air and being exposed to scrutiny, for something that’s “not connected to gun control” having a gun control lobbyist defend it on Fox News puts a lie to those words.

Fox News on the Indiana handgun permit database

I just wrapped up my 5 minutes on Fox News this morning, and I wanted to post the clip here so you could get a look at it.  The segment is about 5 minutes long, and it was a very fast five minutes.  The key points to remember is that the HTO’s database is exactly like a sex offender database in it’s intent, inasmuch as it’s profiling people as a public safety risk.  The difference is that sex offenders are a public safety risk, whereas law abiding citizens exercising their freedom of personal decision and right to keep and bear arms are clearly not. Here’s the video, with my comments on the other side.

Due to the format, I didn’t have the time I would have loved to really respond to some of Dennis’ assertions, namely his last point about how “500 gun owners in Indiana” have been identified as having “criminal backgrounds.” Two salient points to address that, 1) there are over 360,000 permit holders in Indiana – those “500 gun owners” account for 0.13% of that number. Secondly, those “criminal backgrounds” that Dennis is alluding to are in most cases things like minor intoxication tickets, traffic violations, and non violent crimes. Convicted felons, violent criminals, and people that are barred from owning handguns are not getting carry permits.

The bottom line is that this database, any database of carry permit holders is a massive invasion of privacy. It characterizes gun owners like sex offenders or criminals waiting to happen, and exposes people with a need for privacy to the risk of criminal activity, stalking, or other crimes.

Fox News Update!

Just got off the phone with the producer at Fox News. We are on for tomorrow morning, but the time has been moved to 6:20am. Set your DVRs or catch me live tomorrow morning on Fox and Friends at 6:20 Eastern time!

Oh yeah – I found out who my opponent in the debate is going to be: Dennis Henigan from the Brady Campaign. Apparently I am skipping the minor leagues.

MAIG's big lie

Mayors Against Guns would have you believe that NRA Members support gun control. The truth is that their poll is nothing more than heavily manipulated data from a discredited fraud artist. I’m not surprised to see Bloomberg’s people pulling these kinds of stunts, and it’s something we’re really going to have to watch for in the future.

This is why

I have gotten a lot of questions from readers as to why I’m so opposed to the Herald Times printing a database of handgun permit holders.  While there are plenty of reasons, the primary reason that I’m against this sort of thing is that it objectively fails the Jews in the attic test.  While Joe’s test of critical thinking was originally designed to be applied to laws passed by the government, it can also be applied to actions by non-governmental bodies, such as newspapers.  Simply put, would this action make it difficult to protect innocent life from a populace bent on their eradication?  It absolutely would.  A database of “undesirables” shows people which neighborhoods have high concentrations of that specific minority group, which can then in turn lead to them being targeted for persecution.

Yes, you can argue that gun owners != Jews, and you’d be correct.  However, the analogy is quite correct; because if it’s objectively wrong to persecute someone for being Jewish/homosexual/etc, then it is equally wrong to persecute someone for exercising their Constitutional rights.  Regardless of the risk to public safety, or my desire to have my information kept private, I would be opposed to the Herald Times’ database simply because it exposes gun owners to the risk of negative action from anti-gun individuals.

It’s not too much of a stretch – say your boss or someone at work has an ax to grind with you, and they decide to look up your street (since they have that info) to see if you’ve got a permit.  Pop over the Herald Times, they see that on AnyStreet Dr, Indianapolis there are 4 houses with permits.  Well, that’s facts enough for them!  Now you’ve got a permit, and next thing you know, you’re being accused of bringing a firearm to work in violation of company policy…whether or not you did or didn’t doesn’t matter, because someone had an ax to grind, and the Herald Times Online was only too happy to provide them with the wheel on which to sharpen their bit.

Set your VCRs for AWESOME

Who am I kidding? No one has a VCR anymore. However, whatever device you have for recording TV, set it to record the 7:00am hour of Fox and Friends on the Fox News network on TUESDAY Dec 15. I’ll be appearing opposite a representative of the Herald Times Online to talk about their Indiana Handgun permit database.

Again, the time is Tuesday, Dec 15th in the 7am Eastern time hour. This is a change, we were originally scheduled for Monday, but the segment has been moved to Tuesday morning in the 7am Eastern time hour on Fox and Friends on the Fox News Network.

Tactical Thoughts

Do you live somewhere cold? In Indianastan right now it’s somewhere around 300 degrees below zero, which usually means AlGore is in town. All that aside though, the cold weather can play havoc with your carry gun. Sure, you might be able to get your gloved finger inside the trigger guard, but that’s only half the battle. The place where gloves can really mess things up is on the trigger reset.

This past weekend I was out at Eagle Creek pistol range in Indianapolis, freezing to death. With temps in the high 20s, I did 95% of my shooting with the gloves on. While shooting my 625, which had a generous trigger guard, I noticed that even on that platform the gloves caused issues with the reset. The fastest way to shoot a DA revolver is to come completely off the trigger and let the reset spring do its job without manual interference. When wearing gloves, even my thin Blackhawk winter gloves, they added just enough width to my index finger that I couldn’t bounce off the trigger as far as I’d like, and found myself short stroking the trigger a couple of times. I did not have the same problem with the Jetfire, as the much shorter resert on the pocket gun allowed me to get a clean reset every time.

That’s why it’s so important to practice with your carry gun in your regular clothing. If you wear gloves, you need to shoot with those gloves on. Fabric can mess up resets, interfere with the slide, and do a lot of surprising things that you don’t expect…unless you get out there and do some shooting.

SHOT Show 2010

I can’t believe we’re almost there again.  It’s that time of year when rumors of what’s going to be at SHOT start flying fast and thick – I’ve heard everything from a Ruger 1911 to a striker fired Sig, and that’s just what I can find online.  Sadly, this looks like the first time in three years where I won’t be able to be “your man on the floor” at SHOT Show – travel budgets are a lot tighter this year than they were last year.

That being said though, nothing is set in stone until it’s history, so things may change.  However, that’s not the focus of this post, no what I want to see here is what you’d like to see at this year’s SHOT Show.  A new 1911?  Tactical goodies from your favorite black rifle company?  The latest and greatest in compact defensive pistols?  Post your heart’s desire in the comments!
