How to not win

Alienating hunters, veterans, and Obama voters in one fell swoop.

But when father and son arrived at the lesson, the volunteer instructor, Kell Wolf, asked if any of the students voted for President Barack Obama.

Reddy, a transplanted Californian — and former Marine — raised his hand.

According to Reddy and others in the room, Wolf called Obama “the next thing to the Antichrist” and ordered Reddy and Dunkley from the room. When Reddy refused, Wolf said he would not teach “liberals” and would cancel the course if Reddy didn’t leave.

Nice job – thanks to your shenanigans, that kid whose grandfather you kicked out of your course will now have a bad taste in his mouth every time he thinks about conservative gun owners.  I’m not saying that he should have run up to them and embraced them, then slaughtered a fattened calf; but kicking them out of your hunter’s ed course and belittling them was probably not the smartest action either.

  1. Actually, Grandpa wasn’t in the class, from how I read it. Dad took his son to the class so that his son could hunt with Grandpa.

Not that any of that changes the fact that the guy teaching the class was a jackass.

  2. The state agency later did the right thing and offered the grandchild a private lesson so he could go hunting with granddad.

The volunteer instructor was WAY out of line.

In any case, the more liberals are introduced to the shooting sports and made aware of the issues, the more interesting their conversations are going to be with their non-shooting liberal friends. When they attend Democratic rallies and someone tries to push a hoplophobe line, they just might stand up and say “hey, I’m a liberal, a gun owner, I’m not a homicidal maniac, and I support the 2nd amendment…”; That is part of how you win on this issue and build bi-partisan support.
