Indiana Gun Legislation: Senate Bill 0011

Alright Hoosier Gun owners, it is time to contact your State Senators and get them to support Senate Bill 0011, which just passed out of committee yesterday.  From the digest of the bill:

Prohibits a person (which includes an individual, a corporation, and a governmental entity) from adopting or enforcing a policy or rule that prohibits or has the effect of prohibiting an individual from legally possessing a firearm that is locked in the individual’s vehicle while the vehicle is in or on the person’s property.

Again, this bill just passed out of committee yesterday and went to the general Senate.  If you don’t know who your state Senator is, you can click this link to find out who they are and ask them to support SB 0011.

  1. Not so sure I like the wording. You know how lawyers like to parse things out to their advantage…

Let’s say you have a carry gun on you as you drive into your work parking lot. You take it off and put it in your center console, the glove box, under the seat, wherever. Once you open the door to get out, the gun is no longer “locked in the individual’s vehicle” until you shut and lock the doors.

Even if you put it in a locked box inside the car, it could be read as being in violation since the vehicle is not locked for that period of time.

I’m not sure what would be the best way to word it, but what’s there now could use some improvement.
