Grand Canyon Travel Blog

As I mentioned, Mrs. Ahab has never been to Grand Canyon, and the last time I was there I was about 8 years old and didn’t really remember that much.  The Grand Canyon is about a 4.5 hour drive from Las Vegas, so we figured we’d saddle up for a nine-hour round trip to take in the Canyon.

We took a ton of pictures, so I’m going to put a cut in the blog.  All the pictures and blog tales are beneath the cut, so I don’t clutter up the home page.  It is totally worth it to check them out, although I must say that pictures honestly do not do the Canyon justice.  It is hard to express with pictures and adjectives the sheer sense of enormity and grandeur that came over me at the sight of the thing.  Certainly, it is a big hole in the ground, but it is magnificent in a way that I have a hard time explaining.  Click the cut to view the pictures. Click any of the pictures for the fullsize version.

We stopped on the way and took a picture of the Arizona high desert, mainly so I could show my family how much it looks like the Antelope Valley.  Later on the road, there were even Joshua Trees, so Mrs. Ahab saw “God’s Ugliest Tree” for the first time.

After much driving through essentially nothing, we turned onto Highway 64, heading norte to the Canyon.  On the way, we saw the strangest looking butte, which we immediately christened “Nipple Rock”.  Because we have the sense of humor of 12 year olds.

Finally, the Canyon itself.  I present the following pictures without further comment, as they speak for themselves, yet fail to truly capture the immensity of the thing.

For your reference, the far rim of the Canyon in this picture is roughly nine miles away.

The following picture was taken with a camera phone, and is probably the best picture I’ve ever taken with a cellphone.

At the end of the day, the 12 year old humor made another, final appearance.

For a nine hour round trip in the car, it was totally worth it.  We spent a little time at one of a dozen visitor’s centers, took a lot of pictures, and managed to watch a desert sunset.  Great way to spend the day.

  1. The Grand Canyon is a beautiful place. Just watch out for the dust storms…

  2. What kind of camera did you use?

Also, there’s this weird rectangle on one of the canyon photos.

  3. very cool. My Sweetie says you guys “are cute”, and your pics are fun. It’s tough getting that place into a tiny camera, isn’t it! Did you get the burn to hike down there? I’ve still got that in me, and someday I will… I went down the trail about 45 minutes worth once, just to see how it felt, and I really want to do the whole thing some day.
