And this is why

Despite liking his personality, and my previous statements in favor of his candidacy, I could never vote for Huckabee.

“I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution,” Huckabee told a Michigan audience on Monday. “But I believe it’s a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living god. And that’s what we need to do — to amend the Constitution so it’s in God’s standards rather than try to change God’s standards so it lines up with some contemporary view.”

I know that some of my readers are Christians, and so am I.  But stuff like this is precisely what’s wrong with Republican party these days; what happened to being the party of liberty?  When did we turn into the God Party?

It’s hard for me to explain why this frustrates me so much, because I’m sure to offend some of my readers, and I honestly don’t want to do that.  You see, I like faith.  I like religion.  I think that faith in God is a good thing, but it’s also a personal thing.  Just because I believe that Jesus is the Son of God doesn’t give me any right to make you believe the same thing that I do, and it certainly doesn’t give me any right to change the laws of our country to reflect that belief.

I guess that’s what frustrates me; I think that religion is important, my faith is important to me.  But isn’t one of the foundational principles of the country that we the people be free to practice whichever religion we chose, however we chose?  I can’t reconcile the belief in liberty that the founding fathers held with the notion that we should amend the Constitution so it “conforms to God’s laws”.

  1. As a (what I consider to be)devout Christian myself, I firmly believe that the Founders wrote the Constitution specifically to “conform to God’s laws” as promulgated by our Savior, Jesus Christ. I would further contend that (after a little tweaking via the first 14 Amendments) their efforts were a smashing success.

What Huckabee REALLY means is that the Constitution should be changed to FORCE everyone to conform to Christian mores and religious standards regardless of their religious beliefs. This is the antithesis of Christ’s teachings and have no place in our liberty-minded nation.

Jesus entreated us to spread his message by telling others, by living as an example to others and by testifying to others about what He has done in our lives…but if they refuse to believe or accept the message, to let them go on their way; He never advocated throwing them in jail if they refuse to follow the path.

  2. All I can say is that one statement by Mr. Huckabee shows he is unfit for the office. I don’t care about anything else he says, we could be 100% on the same page for everything else and I still would not vote for him based on this quote.

  3. I had liked Huckabee up until this point, I liked how he apparently didn’t bash his faith over other people’s heads, now there’s not a chance in hell he has my vote.
