People ask me

Why I don’t like smoking bans a lot, since I’m not a smoker any longer.  I have always maintained that I have no problem with businesses making the business decision to go smoke free, as it is their right to run their business as they please; no I have a problem with the government mandating that “thou shalt not smoke”.  If you really want to know why I have a problem with that, then you don’t really have to look much further than France:

They say it is undemocratic because it was not passed as a law through the Parliament but announced by government decree.

That’s how it happens a lot of the time here as well.  The governmet up and decides with no voter input to lay the banhammer on something.  I don’t like that.  I don’t care if it’s smoking, trans fats, or jumping out of airplanes with a parachute.

I guess another part of me looks around and is sort of confused that they banned smoking in France.  I mean come on, it’s FRANCE.

  1. Here in Florida, we voted on it and banned it (I know, I was an idiot and voted for it myself). It doesn’t make it any better when democracy is involved.

  2. There is little difference in taking away ones right to smoke and taking away ones right of self-defense,the methodology is similar and bears study by those wishing to protect all rights of the individual.

  3. This is why “super-duper” majorities should be needed for most votes.
